CAR FAILURE # 1,215 Oct. 17, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My wife and 2 small children were on i-75 in Florida to grandmas.70 mph. no
warning no. gauges were fine and car seized up. they were stuck on the freeway
for 2 hours. my wife ,1 child 3 and 1 child 4 years of age going to cost us
approx $3500.00 to fix. needless to say, we will be without a car for awhile, we
had just had other repairs totaling well over $1200.00. Can't afford anymore.
everyone i have asked or talked to about this engine said it was junk (before it
broke) .i'm disappointed in dodge.. enough so I'll never for ever buy another
dodge. I do believe the engine was a lemon from the get go.if dodge was so
family / people minded, they would try to make this right for anyone who bought
one of these cars. - David B.
CAR FAILURE # 1,214 Oct. 17, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with the 2.7 liter engine. About 2 weeks ago
while driving down the interstate, my car started chugging and then locked up. I
was able to at least get it on to the side of the road without causing any
accidents. I waited a few minutes and it started and then about 1/2 way down the
road it did it again. I had my car looked at and they said I was in need of a
new engine. Estimates are $3-4,500. I am a single mom and this was my only means
of transportation. I have contacted my dealership and they said they could not
do anything. Hope someone can help me. I feel bad for all those other people
with low incomes buying these vehicles. Something needs to be done. Thanks,
Amanda G.
CAR FAILURE # 1,213 Oct. 17, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My 2000 Chrysler Concord has a blown engine @ 80,000 miles. I called
Chrysler to file a complaint, and the man hung up on me. The are not willing to
even talk about the garbage they sale! I asked for my Zone Reps phone #, and
they would not give it to me. - Carmen M.
CAR FAILURE # 1,212 Oct. 17, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I would like to go on record to complaint against Chrysler about the poor
performance of the 2.7 liter engine in my 2000 Chrysler Concorde. The engine
failure at 108609 miles. I just had over approximate $1400.00 of maintenance
work perform on it at 80,000 miles. I would like to become part of the nation
wide law suite against Chrysler. If this is not where I file this complaint to
become part of this law suite, please provide me the e-mail link. - Thank you,

CAR FAILURE # 1,211 Oct. 17, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I am the unfortunate owner of a 2000 dodge intrepid. My car is 5 years old
with only 50,000 miles one it and the engine is blown. During the warranty
period i had my car in on 3 occasions complaining that the car was driving
sluggish and it seemed as if the transmission was slipping. On each occasion i
was told by the dealer that the couldn't find anything wrong with it. The car
continued to operate this way but i assumed that it was just the way the car
drove since i was told on 3 occasions that it was fine. I am disable with 2
children and while i was driving on the highway my engine was making a loud
noise and then just died!! After several attempts to get it started it turned on
only to be able to drive it a few feet when it completely failed and i coasted
over to the side of the road. - Greeg
CAR FAILURE # 1,210 Oct. 17, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid 2.7L engine. I became aware of the sludge
problem when oil warning light would flicker at stoplights. I have switched to
Synthetic oil (Mobile One) as recommended from a BB, but the problem has gotten
even worse. Is there a fix for this aside from replacing engine? I am probably
days away from blowing this engine. Car is paid for, really can’t afford to
replace it now. Any help??

CAR FAILURE # 1,209 Oct. 15, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought my 1999 Chrysler Intrepid last week. The next morning I was
searching for information about this car and I found the horror stories about
the failed 2.7 L engines. My car has 87,000 miles and I started with engine
knock 27 hours after getting the car home. I got the oil changed before I drove
3 hours home. The mechanic said the used oil was a little two-toned but that the
engine looked good. He had never heard of the sludge problem of this engine.
Once I got the car home (it ran like new for the trip home) I was going to go
right through it, flushing the engine, radiator and transmission, followed by a
switch to synthetic oil. I think I'm a little late. We have a 1994 Intrepid
which has 122,000 miles and this car is a gem which is why we decided to buy
another Intrepid. We are still waiting for a professional to look at the 1999
and give us some advice. Paul & Tracy K.
CAR FAILURE # 1,208 Oct. 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My engine light came on and shortly after the car starting knocking and
pinging. I took it to the Chrysler Dealer and the service department manager
told me I had a bad rod and the engine was virtually shot and wasn't worth
fixing. He said he was ashamed to say the 2.7 engines were junk. I have a 1999
Intrepid and he said the cost of repairing the engine would cost more than the
current value of the car. I made the mistake of not researching the vehicle
before I bought it. This car has had many other problems including the
Transmission and electrical problems with door locks and power seats.
CAR FAILURE # 1,207 Oct. 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My engine went out with less that 89,000 miles on it. It is a 2001 Chrysler
Concorde. I was told that it was due to the oil sludge. I have found out while
trying to find a new engine that this is a huge problem and that another used
engine is very expensive. My dad could install it but all the people we have
found selling them require that you let them install. Even with a "good deal"
$3000 is the cheapest I can get another USED engine installed for that may end
up having the same problem but will owe way more on the vehicle now that it is
worth! This is not right! - Sonya W.
CAR FAILURE # 1,206 Oct. 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I was around 700 miles from home for my sons wedding in May and the engine
started to knock my husband who is a certified automechanic by the state of Ohio
for over 25 years looked it over and found nothing the next day we were driving
back home and the knocking stopped the car drove fine after that and did not
make the noise again. Always had the oil changed every 3000 miles and we have
always used syntetic oil in the car. 1 Month later on my way to work I was
driving on state route 571 when the car started jerking and stopping then
starting again I almost got rearended by a semi truck before I could get the car
off the road. I called my husband to tell him what had happened I was very shook
up scared out of my mind I thought I was going to be ran over by a semi. He told
me to drive on the side of the road until I could turn off on a side road so I
did. I was able to nurse it home and take another car to work that day. We took
it down to the Chrysler dealer in town and they told us there was sludge in the
oil and told us it would be 7200 dollers to fix the car I don't have that kinda
money laying around so the car is sitting in my driveway while I try to come up
with the money to fix it. - Carla Jo Y.
CAR FAILURE # 1,205 Oct. 13, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I had a problem with my engine too. It started to sound like a diesel engine
so I took it to a friend who knows just about everything there is to know about
cars (although he doesn't own a repair shop). As soon as he heard the noise he
said get this fixed or you'll be buying yourself a new car real soon. I took the
car to a mechanic and sure enough, I had to replace the engine at a cost of
$5,700. When I called the dealership about it I was basically told that they
have seen it before but the problem is that the owners were not maintaining
their cars and that the engine has recently been redesigned. I'm still trying to
get some sort of reimbursement but I'm not holding my breath. - Thanks, John

CAR FAILURE # 1,204 Oct. 13, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 2001 Dodge Stratus, bought new in 2001, that is now a driveway
ornament. This is due to a bad 2.7l engine, that I was told is due to oil
sludge. The car has 71500 miles on it and was well maintained within there so
called guidlines. Started it up one morning to a nasty knocking noise, after
arriving at work I called a local garage to see about getting it in to be
checked. All I had to do was tell him what kind of car it was and he
automatically said "Oh it has the 2.7L engine in it" I knew things would go down
hill after that. They basically told me the timing gear was gone and there was
metal all in the engine, and this was a common oil sludge problem with these
cars. He said don't feel bad I just has a 2002 Dodge intrepid in here with 38000
miles on it with the same problem. Like that was suppose to make me feel better.
So now with a car I still owe 2 years on, it will cost $3800 for a used (that
they won't warranty because it will do the same thing) or $5700 for a rebuilt
engine that has all the original roubles repaired in it. So now I have a
driveway ornament to pay for, no money to fix it due to being buried in medical
bills from my wife battling stage IV breast cancer, wondering how to get to work
so I can keep paying for my driveway ornament, and how to get a sick wife back
and forth to treatments. All I can say is Thanks Dodge....NOT!!!!. I wish I knew
the personal address of the Daimler-Chrysler CEO...I would take my car there and
let him have a 2001 Dodge Stratus Driveway ornament...Michael from Indiana
CAR FAILURE # 1,203 Oct. 13, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Put me on your list. 1998 Dodge Intrepid, purchased in 1999. Died this date
due to engine oil sludge. Approx. 70k. I was told by Bald Hill Dodge Service
Dept. (Warwick, RI) that I now own a planter. Not satisfied w/statement in fact
quite upset. What's next? Please advise. - Bernie I
CAR FAILURE # 1,202 Oct. 13, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 99 Dodge ram Quad 1500 4X4 purchased new in 99. I have had so many
issues with this vehicle I could die! At 10 k the rear end blew apart and I do
absolutely do no off road, this was covered under warranty (thank God). I’ve had
multiple transmission issues, one time covered under warranty and three times
not! I purchased at the dealer time of purchase an extended warranty up to 80 k,
I wish I would have gone longer, me the American people (my bad). Why the #&!!
Do we have to buy a warranty after paying 30K in the first place? I drive this
vehicle mostly high way and I have been very punctual on the oil changes but at
121K the motor blew, got the big thumbs up with a middle finger from U-NO WHO on
that one and ended up putting in a jasper 4k later I’m still not happy. At 90K
the AC evap coil went out that cost 1k at the dealer, of course that was in
August HOT & HUMID. I had more than my share of issues, I guess too many to
mention as my blood pressure is climbing just thinking about it. I had front end
problems and replaced most of it, currently back on the doccit as I have more
issues. OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH My God I gotta quit talking about it, I’m getting too
upset. - Dan S.
CAR FAILURE # 1,201 Oct. 13, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My wife's car failed on the highway last week it will cost me nearly
$1300.00 to repair the head gasket. I'm waiting to hear from the workshop if
it's going to work or not, my wife had the car for one and a half year , we got
it from a five stars Chrysler dealer in Mass. I don't know what to do if the
head gasket repair didn't work out. I will never ever buy a Chrysler anymore. -Aser

CAR FAILURE # 1,200 Oct. 12, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Well I have the same story as everyone else. I had changed the oil
faithfully at 3,000 miles on my 99 Intrepid. There were 90K miles on the car and
all of a sudden there was a ticking in the engine but it ran fine. Before I
could schedule an appt. to get it looked at, as I was driving down the road, the
check engine light came on and the car started running sluggish. I realized I
better find some place to park it. I parked it, got it towed to my mechanic and
he called me with the news that the engine had “fallen apart on the inside”.
Now, as with everyone else on this site I’m stuck with a pretty nice looking
paper weight. I loved the car so I was considering dropping a new/used engine
into it. As I got on the internet to look for one this was the first sight I
found. I think I’ll bag the new engine idea and find another car. - Dan B.
CAR FAILURE # 1,199 Oct. 12, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
In 2001 I bought a 99 intrepid w/ 63,000 miles, it was a beautiful car & I
was very satisfied until the engine blew at 103,000 mi. I took it as a loss &
junked the car. At that time I was not aware that the cars were lemons, I
thought that I just had some bad luck. so I bought another one, at 93,000 mi.
the engine started knocking & now I'm being told a need a new engine so the car
just sits while I continue to make payments. Please if you have a class action
lawsuit started advise me on how I can get on the list. Thank You - Jason
CAR FAILURE # 1,198 Oct. 12, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Own 2000 Dodge Intrepid. 82,000 miles - last June started "coughing" or
hesitating, stalled once. Worse between 55 and 65 miles per hour. Took to
Commonwealth Dodge dealership (bought car here used in 2002) in Louisville, KY
to have problem checked out. They charged $40 to "check it out" and said nothing
wrong. Took to local shop and had tune-up. They said something about a
"technical bulletin" where engine needed reprograming something about changing
gears and we needed to take it to a dealer shop for repairs. Kept driving with
stuttering or missing or whatever it is and October 7, 2005, wit only 82,000
miles on it, the car died and would not start - wrecker service suggested
sounded like timing chain. Took to dealer 10-11. They are now fixing the timing
chain. Don't have price for repairs yet, but will be expensive. - Bonnie G.
Part Two - Have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with 82,000 miles on it. Timing
chain broke and cracked something that spilled oil throughout engine. Now need
new engine. Rebuilt engine with 3 month warranty quote with dealer is $4,000.
New engine with 3 yr warranty quote is $6,000. Another dealer has offer to take
car as is (needing motor) and sell us a used car - giving us "$1,500" for our
old one as is. So hard to make a decision. Car was in great shape before this
happened. Thought had another 30,000 to 40,000 life in it. Do you know where
we can get advice on what to do - pay for rebuilt or new engine and keep or
trade as is and take whatever deal we can get???
CAR FAILURE # 1,197 Oct. 11, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have already had the timing chain replaced due to sludge build up. 2 years
ago. Now, the engine failed while driving on the expressway Thursday Oct. 6.
2005. I am told I need a new engine and again it is due to sludge build up. I am
very interested ina suit that will enable me to recover the thousands of dollars
in repair costs from this vehicle. Robert P. - Clawson, Mi
CAR FAILURE # 1,196 Oct. 11, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
One week ago today while driving on a major highway my 2001 Dodge Intrepid
quit running!! I was driving about 65 miles an hr. in a 3 lane passing lane and
the car made a "boom" sound and started smoking. Thought the car was on fire!!
Grateful the highway was just widened to have a left shoulder to pull onto.
After having the car towed to dealership, was informed it was the timing chain
and could it repaired for $2200. I was informed it could last 1 week, 1 month or
1 year. Best to have new engine installed for $6500! Dodge is getting away with
this and its not right. I have 66,000 miles on this car and now it sits at the
dealership! I expect a car to last more than 4 years! How is it they get away
with selling defective cars and don't take responsibility for this problem?
Where can we find help for this problem?? Sincerely, Joyce G
CAR FAILURE # 1,195 Oct. 10, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
The 2.7 liter engine on our 2003 Dodge Intrepid with 62K miles seized
without warning on October 3rd, 2005 while traveling on a 2-lane highway and
sandwiched between two huge motor homes. Fortunately we were able to get to the
side of the road without incident. The car is currently (10/10/2005) at a
dealership 300 miles from our home being torn down to determine the cause and if
they will cover it under warranty. Let the battle begin! - Chris
CAR FAILURE # 1,194 Oct. 10, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought a used 2000 Dodge Intrepid for my teenage daughter ( her first car)
and the engine blew while she was driving it. Only by the grace of god did she
avoid injury - to herself or others. We bought the car from the Penn State
University which had maintained it meticulously and gave me all the maintenance
records. The car only had 74,000 miles on it. Now, too late, I have found that
the 2.7L engine is notorious for engine failures. Is there any recourse? -

CAR FAILURE # 1,193 Oct. 10, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 1998 Chrysler Concord with a 2.7 liter engine. The original engine
locked up at 60,000 miles and I replaced it with a rebuilt engine. Now, 50,000
miles later my wife takes the car in for a oil change and they recommend that
she flush the engine. Considering that my Dodge dealer told us the first engine
failed due to sludge build up, I decided to let them flush the engine. The day
following the service, my oil light starts flashing when the car is at idle. The
flashing light was followed a day or two later by a loud clacking sound from the
engine. I know this sound, it's the same sound I heard the last time my engine
was failing. It is ridiculous that Chrysler is able to continue making tens of
billions of dollars in profit while so many customers are enduring financial
hardship because of their product. The bottom line is that regardless of how
well maintained your Chrysler is, your engine will fail. It's just a matter of
when ? - Darrin W.
CAR FAILURE # 1,192 Oct. 08, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I purchased a 1999 Concorde with 50,000 miles on it in 2003. Last week a
loud knocking sound started from the engine. I took it to the dealer where I
purchased this car, and was told all the rocker arms needed to be replaced at a
cost of 1800 dollars. The tech who worked on the car informed me that the 2.7
liter engine has a design flaw in it that causes the engine to die at about
60,000 miles. He called me on his cell phone because he didn't want to get in
trouble for sharing this information with me. I guess I was on borrowed time, my
engine died at 79,500. The design flaw is that the engine is always starved for
oil. This is totally unacceptable!! we need to start a class action law suite
and force DiamlerChrysler to step up to the plate and back up their products. I
have been reading all the complaints about the 2.7 liter engine Chrysler has
used in various cars and almost everyone is the same, sludge build up and poor
oil flow causes engine destruction. Sounds like a design flaw to me. - John B.

CAR FAILURE # 1,190 Oct. 07, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2002 Intrepid that is sitting at my mechanics shop with a 2.7 motor
that is dead. It died last Friday night as we were going down the interstate. I
am very frustrated and was looking on the internet and found you guys.
Apparently I am not the only one that this has happened to. Can you please let
me know if you think there is anything I can do. - Thanks! Randall M
CAR FAILURE # 1,189 Oct. 07, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought my 2000 Chrysler Concorde just one year ago. I love the car, but i
have had a lot of water damage. For whatever reason the trunk leaks water. Where
the spare goes was full of water, as least a foot. I contacted Chrysler and they
said they could do nothing for me. Well as of today my engine is knocking. My
dad originally bought me the car because i didn't have any money. I have a two
year old son who is allergic to mold, which he has to deal with every day when
we get in that car. Well i have been paying my dad back now for one year and i
still have one year left. It just figures that something like this has to
happen. I have had the car just shut off in stop and go traffic, which was nerve
wracking when i have a two year old in the car. I paid 10,000 for that thing and
now i have to get a new motor. To be quit honest i will never buy another
Chrysler again. I'm very sorry u all are having similar problems. Hopefully they
will get there act together and maybe decide to help us all out. - Nicole D.
CAR FAILURE # 1,188 Oct. 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
This is not right away, as I just saw your site, but my Intrepid engine
seized up in June 2004 with about 90,000 miles on it. The problem was sludge. Do
I have any legal recourse, or is Dodge doing anything about it? - Regards,
Braxton T.
CAR FAILURE # 1,187 Oct. 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2004 Dodge Intrepid at about 49000 miles the check engine light
came on. My mechanic found out that it was a cam sensor and luckily it was
covered under an emissions warranty. Now at 53000 miles my oil light has come
on. I checked and broken seals, leaks and the oil level is fine. I have been
doing research and found that this problem is not uncommon. I will be taking it
to my mechanic and I want to know is there anything I can tell me mechanic when
I take it in? - GErci H.
CAR FAILURE # 1,186 Oct. 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We have a 2001 intrepid with 58,000 miles- to make a long story short it.
Quit while picking our kids up at school. This was a big mess and upon. Having
the car towed 4 times, we have found no answers. In further investigating the
problem we have found out the horror stories with the 2.7's. Now we have a car
that we owe $4000.00 on and we can not get it Fixed. The repairs are way to
expensive and no dealer or salvage yards Will touch the car. To make matters
worse, we had a used engine, with 70,000 miles installed and that one was
defective also. Now we are left With a lemon or we can have a new engine put in
for $6000-$8000. Needless To say the car is not worth it, nor should we be
responsible for such a Poor product. - Damon P.
CAR FAILURE # 1,185 Oct. 05, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

CAR FAILURE # 1,184 Oct. 05, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
2000 Dodge Intrepid. Engine died at 102,000 miles. Coolant in the oil pan.
I'm pulling the engine apart to see what the problem is and get an idea how much
it will cost to repair it myself. I can do this cause I have the time and the
tools. My goal is to do the repairs (good luck) so I can drive it till it dies,
again. I have 2 years of payments on the car. If I disassemble the engine and
find it's not economical to repair, I will slowly cut up the whole car and put
it in the trash a little at a time. I don't have the title so I can't junk it.
But as long as I make the loan payments, the loan company won't know a thing.

CAR FAILURE # 1,183 Oct. 05, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
The car was purchased in August of 1999 brand new. The engine failed at
65,000 2 years ago. I've contacted Dodge and was informed that they have not
heard of any issues with the engine. I still have the car in my possession
hoping that they will recall it. - Estes S.
CAR FAILURE # 1,182 Oct. 04, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
The problems with my Intrepid started with my check engine light coming on
and it had stalled out on me a few times. I had my oil changed and had a
diagnostic run and was told I had to bring it to a Dodge dealer if the light
came on again. On Friday Sept 16th I brought my car to a local dealer. I was
told that if I needed to have the cam and crankshaft sensor replaced or the car
would most likely leave me on the side of the road. So after paying $400 dollars
for my two sensors I drove away happily thinking everything was ok.So, on Monday
Sept 19, 2005 I retrieved my 99 Dodge Intrepid from the local dealer. On
Wednesday Sept 21 2005, yes two days later, I was on the side of the road with a
dead car. On a busy highway I waited with an active toddler and my "fixed car"
for two hours. Now from everything I have been reading, it seems I do not have a
unique situation. My car is right over 80,000 mile my extended warranty was up
to 79,000 miles. I have 2 years before it is paid off and do not have enough
money to fix/replace the engine or have a down payment for another car and two
notes. Maybe there is light at the end of this tunnel, hope it can be seen
through the sludge. Angie T. - Franklin, La
CAR FAILURE # 1,181 Oct. 04, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Well, just like everyone else on this site...my 2.7 litre Dodge Intrepid is
sitting at my house no longer running. My car was working perfectly fine on a
Friday morning, on that same Friday night my car was making strange noises,
someone put it perfectly, like a playing card in bicycle spokes...only louder.
If i let the car idle, it would go below 500 RPM and stall out. It was very
strange. I was driving it around and all of a sudden it died in the middle of
the street, at about 55-56 mph. now it wont start, just a clicking noise.
battery is good, starter is good...nothing happens. i am going to call as many
people in the industry that i know that work for Chrysler and see what i can
come up with. but for now, i have a great looking car, that doesn't work,
sitting at my house. - DUSTIN East Lansing, MI
CAR FAILURE # 1,180 Oct. 04, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
i just bought my 2001 dodge intrepid with the 2.7 liter engine about 13
months ago. changed oil every 3000 miles and about a week ago the check oil
light started flickering on my dash board. took it in for a diagnostic and was
informed that the oil pressure is low in the engine due to some internal
problems and apparently need engine replaced. i still owe around $6000 dollars
and and an estimate of $4500 or more for new engine. i'm in a tight financial
situation in the moment and can't afford a loan. i depend on my car to travel to
work everyday. i bought this car expecting reliability for travel and now at
83000 miles i need a new engine. i'm very upset and now stuck with some serious
problems. - Yonic R.

piston exploded and the engine is ruined beyond repair. It gave no warning. The
temperature gauge did not go over normal until after the engine died. - Angie T
CAR FAILURE # 1,178 Oct. 03, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We bought a 2002 Dodge Intrepid about 15 months ago. I stopped at a store
and when I came out and started the car and put into reverse it wouldn't go. I
put into drive and it did go so I kept driving home. When I got to a stop sign
after I stopped and pushed on the gas I heard the engine revving but there was
NO pull. I turned the car off and restarted put into drive and the vehicle did
move but only about 20 feet and then coasted. I turned off and restarted and it
did the same thing. I had to repeat this till I got home. About a mile. After
calling Chrysler they informed us that there was nothing they could do. Called
the dealer that we bought it from and they said So sorry but your warranty just
ran out. There is no way we can afford to pay the 2000.00 cost to fix this car,
plus the 346.02 per month. We still owe just under 10,000 on this car. We bought
it cause we were so sick of buying used cars that need so much work and we
trusted the Dodge name. Not anymore. We had no idea that Chrysler was such a
ripp off artist and they need to be stopped. Please let me know of any lawsuit.
Thank you, Brian and Holly P., Black Oak, AR
CAR FAILURE # 1,177 Oct. 03, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
What exactly are the symptoms of failure of the engine. I just bought
Chrysler Concorde 2,7 l engine 1998 year. it have 134000 miles and it is running
excellent. I just went to the Fast Lube to change the oil with request of
checking for sludge. There was no on the oil filter and oil cup. So they just
put new oil (mobile one synthetic) and i'm using it still. I didint notise any
white smoke from the exhoust. I can fill a little shakes on the acceleration
pedal but just a little bit stedy shaces through whole time engine is running. I
am a litlle worry becouse after reading your article i realize that i have the
heater problem. When i turn the blower swich over nothing is happening untill it
reaches the highest level, than it starting blowing like creazy. Is these the
simptom you talking about or these is some thing else, like swich problem. when
i swich it to highest spining level the hot air is blowing. Please help me with
the answers i dont know what to do Sincerely, Lee
CAR FAILURE # 1,176 Oct. 02, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My case started when I was going down to Florida, about nine hours drive
from Charlotte, NC. Taking a 30 minutes rest every two hours, the check engine
light came on after the sixth hours. Due to concern that the engine may be
overheating I started taking longer rest every hour after that, even though the
heat level was still below half. The check engine light finally went off for
good once I got to destination and was planning to have it checked at the
nearest dodge dealer (it would certainly have been a waste of time to have
someone tell me that they can't find anything wrong...) For one month the car
drove fine; no engine noise, no smoke coming out of anything, great start.
Finally early July 2005, I drove it for about three miles and as I was going up
a ramp off the interstate, I heard a noise from the engine. The car started to
shake and I stopped about one mile away at a safer place. Smoke was coming out
of the engine and the passenger side of the engine showed a crack on the front
spark plug connection. The Dodge dealer where I bought the car for $21,000
(including the extended warranty that will not fix anything less than $500) told
me I would have to replace the engine at a price of about $6,000. I am still
waiting for a better solution than paying that much more. After interest, the
cost of driving this car has been about $5,000/year. This is a total waste of
money!!! - Lukky
CAR FAILURE # 1,175 Oct. 02, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 2001 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 Liter with 29300 miles on it. My wife went
to start it this morning and it turned over and begun sputtering, as if it had a
gas pick up problem, and then shut down. She tried to start it again, but it
would not start. I then went to start it and it turned over, but I noticed that
it didn't sound as if the engine was turning over (like no compression). So,
having years of automotive knowledge, I marked the serpentine belt with a crayon
and turned it over again to see if the belt moved. The belt was rotated, so I
knew that the engine crank was rotating. Then I knew it was major! I went to my
regular serviceman and asked what he thought. He told me that it was probably
the timing chain, and that these engines were notorious for that. Also he gave
me the news that the engine was more then likely "Junk" now because the valves
got bent, and there may be piston damage etc. . This is a motor that has less
than 30000 miles on it, and has had the oil and filter changed every 5000 miles
with Mobil One synthetic. Now, being out of work for 5 months now, I can not
afford to have it repaired. Any ideas as to what can be done? - Maine Man

CAR FAILURE # 1,173 Oct. 02, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
To Whom it may concern, - Recently, I have been having quite a bit of
trouble with my car. I have had it since 2000. I have kept up with all the
maintenance. Today, while driving on the expressway, the Intrepid shut off on me
3 times within a 1 mile distance. Please, if you have any suggestions, let me
know what I should do next in this situation. I was reading information on the
internet that led me to this e-mail. I had no idea that this was such a
widespread problem. Again, thank you for any assistance you can offer. Any
questions or requests for additional information can be directed to this e-mail

CAR FAILURE # 1,171 Sept. 30, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Just three days ago, my engine seized while driving down the road! What
could the problem be??? I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid 3.2L - Curtis H. - Troy, TX
CAR FAILURE # 1,170 Sept. 29, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have recently experienced this exhausting problem, & I mean EXHAUSTING! I
have diligently changed the oil in my Intrepid and had it serviced since the day
I bought it, I was so excited when I purchased it and they sold it to me with
the remaining 70000 mile warranty still attached because it had been a "dealer
car." I even went as far as to have it changed at less then the recommended 3000
mile mark. Upon the first case of sludge buildup I noticed (when the oil light
came on 12 days after it's oil change), I immediately took it to a local place
and had the vehicle flushed not once but twice to try to remove the sludge from
the car and eliminate future problems I might have. Boy was I in for a shock.
What the mechanic showed me was unbelievable. Less than 300 miles into this oil
change the oil looked like tar! I immediately made the assumption the 15 minute
oil change place I had used could not have possibly changed the oil! I contacted
them and spoke to the manager who assured me this was not the case. I never used
them again thinking it was their fault. After the flush the oil light went off,
problem fixed, no. Although the oil light never came back on indicating a
problem the vehicle started to get a knock and it continued to worsen, I took it
in for 4 more flushes @ different times, neither of which anyone there could
explain the constant sludge buildup in the car. I currently still owe 4000.00 on
this car so you can imagine my dismay when upon the last oil change @200 miles
the car simply quit. I had it towed to the local repair shop where I found
someone very knowledgeable with this problem, mind you Dodge nor anyone else had
ever contacted me that their might be a potential problem with this car. Upon
his assessment of the vehicle (which took about 1 hour tops) he told me the
pistons were shot, the valves were probably shot also and the timing belt
shredded. It would be 200.00 labor just to survey and see how much more
extensive the damage was, but even if I did that the engines were virtually
nonexistent due to the problems with these cars. So now I have a car worth less
than 1000.00 sitting in my driveway useless. I had planned on trading when it
was paid off, (mistake) I have always like dodge vehicles, yes they are very
pretty, but also because of their dependability. NEVER AGAIN! I have contacted
my attorney who has told me he has dealt with this problem before and has some
contacts for this problem. I contacted my finance company who said "to bad." Has
anyone had an offer from Chrysler to fix the problem? Thank You,
Dana B. - Andersonville, TN
CAR FAILURE # 1,169 Sept. 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I just purchased a 99 dodge intrepid at a public auction not knowing what i
was getting into. I already had to replace the oil sending unit and connector.
When i was on the way home from the repair shop i heard a awful sound from the
engine, so i turned back around and the car was in the shop for a few more days
and they determined that the timing chain and tensioner was about to fail, being
already broke from buying this car with a loan i had no choice but to tell them
to put the engine back together which cost me a big labor bill. The repair shop
just recommended on getting a new engine, yea right. Now I'm driving a time bomb
just waiting to go off because i have no other choice. If anyone has any info
that could help this costly repair bill or reimbursement of the car purchase
that would be hugely appreciated.

We have a 2004 Dodge Intrepid 3.5 motor in our police car. The engine blew
up with only 45K on it. The car was very well maintained with service being done
every 3 thousand miles. We even used Synthetic oil. The officer was driving
normal speed(50) and there was no indication of any engine failure going to
happen. The number 5 piston spun a rod and smacked the valves. Dodge will not do
anything to fix this. IF you need further please contact me. - Col. Mark D.

I was driving in my 1999 Dodge intrepid when it started making a funny noise
I went to drive it home to check it out ( I was about 2 miles from my house when
all of a sudden it just made a really bad noise and stopped on me in the middle
of the 5 o clock heavy heavy traffic. All of the water just came out of the car
. I had it towed to my house and called a mechanic to come look at it they told
me that it was the water pump maybe even the head gaskets becasue my oil had
water in it . The job just for the water pump itself not the timing or to check
the gaskets was an estimate of 700.00 Dollars because it is in the engine and a
part of the timing belt.Usually in some cars I could have taken car of the water
pump matter my self but no way with this one thanks for listing this is my
problem .

In February of 2004 my 2001 Dodge Intrepid that had approximately 80k miles
engine seized. During the initial tow the gentleman told me that he was
averaging 5 Intrepids a week. My finance company insisted that I purchase and
extended warranty when I purchased the vehicle and NOW I KNOW WHY....I went to
the extended warranty company and they refused to honor my warranty even after I
forwarded all of my documentation showing my records of maintenance. I had to
return the car and now I have a repossession on my report on a vehicle that
every auto mechanic shop knows about the engine problem...Regina - Ohio State

CAR FAILURE # 1,164 Sept. 28, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I just purchased a Dodge Intrepid with 93,000 miles. After driving it a few
days the "check engine" light came on. I have returned it to the dealer three
times and the have replaced all of the O2 sensors. Today they did a smoke test
on the exhaust system. there was no leak. Their conclusion is that it is the
infamous "2.7 engine problem, due to sludge." They explained that I am burning
oil and that is why the light keeps coming on. Fortunately I have purchased an
extended warranty and the dealer is going to pick up the deductible. - Ken

1999 DODGE DURANGO - Just hit 100,000 miles. Car began stalling out of the
blue. Instrument panel lights up with nonsensical messages when nothing is
wrong. Service on a regular basis, told fuel pump was bad. $390.00 and two hours
later, it stalled in traffic again. Back to the shop. Several hundred dollars in
labor and even more for a new computer brain, and yet it continues to stall.
Gaskets, sensors, wires, plugs, just about anything you could replace has been
and yet it still stalls in the middle of the road for no reason known to my

CAR FAILURE # 1,162 Sept. 27, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I purchased a Dodge Neon approximately 1 year ago. When I purchased the car
it had approximately 5100 miles on it. They told us it was a demo car. So far I
have had 1 tire with only 18000 miles split at the seam, another gong bad. I
currently have two CD's stuck in my 6 CD changer that they cannot get out. When
I took it over to have it looked at it appeared that I was and interruption of
their work. Since we were not there to buy another car they really didn't care
what was wrong with mine. They hit the CD several times until they broke the
front cover trying to get the CD's out. I had the oil and filter changed today
and was told that the cams were going bad, and that there were two other
problems. This car is still under warranty, but they will only fix the CD
player. So what does a BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY COVER? - Jeff H.
CAR FAILURE # 1,161 Sept. 27, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought a 2004 Dodge Intrepid in June 2004 and I only owned it for a couple
of months and the engine kept quiting on me on the side of the road. I brought
it to the repair shop several times and no one can find out what is wrong with
it. I keep up with all the oil changes and take good care of my car. The last
time I went to have the oil changed they told me to get rid of the car as soon
as I can. That the engine was getting really to go in it.Now the oil light stays
on even after I have had it serviced. I can't trade It I owe more than it is
worth. So now I am stuck with it. Wish I had know about all of this before I
bought the car!!!!!! Sue B.
CAR FAILURE # 1,160 Sept. 27, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Hello. I was looking around online today and saw all of this about engine
failures on the 2.7 liter doge engines. I was looking this up because on my way
from school to work i heard a very loud clunking and tapping noise. while my car
slowed down and i was a a red light it died. i tryed starting it back up and it
wouldnt start unless i gave the engine some gas while turning the key. it
finally started and after doing this multiple times i made it to a gas station
to park. during the start attempts i saw some white smoke coming from the hood
of my car. i have seen since then countless complaints online from people with
my exact car having the exact problems. and it seems as if im screwed and have
nothing to do but sell it for what parts still run. everything on my car works
and worked great untill now. is there anything i can do? please let me
know.thanks alot, - Nathan G

Add my name to the list!! - I have a 2000 Concorde that just died to due a
timing chain break which I am told is due to sludge issues in the engine. I am
just getting started on your to-do list but I wanted you all to be aware of the
issue. My car has/had 64290 miles on it and the estimated repair bill is $5800.
Bummer since I still owe $5500. Please let me know if you need further info.

CAR FAILURE # 1,158 Sept. 22, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought my car when I fell in love with it. I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid.
Don't get me wrong, they look nice, but are not worth rebuilding the engine.
After buying the car, my dad followed me home and noticed that the car was
smoking at takeoff. We had no idea that these 2.7 liter pieces of crap could
cause so much trouble. I thought that maybe there were leaks around the pistons
causing the smoke, so I put some sealer in the engine. Nope, didn't even help.
The car
would smoke all the time after this, so I found myself checking the oil every
2-3 days, with the level getting smaller each day. The car had 100k miles on it.
About a month after buying the car, I was driving on a busy interstate and my
car started making an awful noise, so I slowed down to pull over, and the oil
light blinked once, and the engine just stopped. I got out of the car and
checked my oil, just to find that it was bone dry. I had just checked the oil
that morning and it was full. Now I am stuck with a car that I cannot afford to
fix & it will never sell, and a 150 dollar towing fee. Something definitely
needs to be done about this. I am stuck with no mode of transportation and it
was estimated that the cost of repair would be between 2,500 and 4,000, which I
cannot afford! Thanks a lot Dodge---YOU SUCK

Hi, I have had a intrepid with the 2.7 motor since 14000 miles and now for
the last 2 years it sits in a storage area with the same problems all the rest
of them have had. 70000 miles and it is worthless. I can actually buy a nicer

want help.........PLEASE advise of any class action suits I can join.

CAR FAILURE # 1,156 Sept. 22, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought my 2001 Sebring brand new. I always took perfect care of it,
following the manufacturers maintenance requirements. I have 54K miles on it and
the head gasket just blew. That's a $1400.00 job. Then the radiator started to
leak. Since the radiators are plastic, they must be replaced. That's another
$480. I am very disappointed. I try to always buy American cars, and I would
have stuck with a manufacturer for life because I believe in customer loyality.
Well, this is not only my last Chrysler, but sadly, it's my last American car.
That's what hurts the most. - Denise

Like everyone else that has posted to this site, I too have had the
misfortune of purchasing a vehicle with the 2.7L engine. We bought our 2000
Dodge Intrepid new for my wife back in the fall of 1999. As with so many others,
this was the first car we actually purchased new. I had driven this model many
times as rentals during business trips and really liked they way they handled
and performed. This was my wife’s car and as the story goes, at about 67,000
miles in December 2004, just a few days before Christmas, it died while she was
driving. Luckily, she was coming to a stop at a light as it happened so she was
moving very slow and it did not cause an accident. - Jim F.

Hello - I came across your website while trying to find out more information
about my car and was astounded. I have a 99 Chrysler Concorde LX 2.7. Yesterday
I was told I need a new oil pump because I have no pressure. It has only 85,211
miles on the car. A rather low amount in comparison. While reading through your
website, I noticed that it talked about the car heater problems. This is exactly
what mine does and no mechanic could tell me why or fix it. Now the oil pump is
out. I wanted to get rid of the car and may do so sooner rather than later. I
hope others will be informed of the functions of Chrysler.
Sincerely - Robbin

I am a senior woman who has a 1999 Intrepid. While driving the oil warning
light came on ( the dummy light as I call it) However, the light came on only
after the engine was completely dry of oil. My entire engine is damaged and I am
putting in a used engine from a newer model (2001) and it is costing me $4000.00
in repairs. Sandra - Hemet, CA.
CAR FAILURE # 1,151 Sept. 21, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 2000 dodge intrepid. At 59000 miles the timing chain broke and the
engine had a sludge build up. I had changed the oil every 3 to 4,000 miles and
they said I had not taken care of the engine and would do nothing but would put
in a new engine for $6000. I have purchased or leased 7 new vehicles for
Chrysler over the last 9 years and it meant absoutley NOTHING to them. I had the
car towed to a friends garage and the dealership wouldn t even put the engine
back together without charging me more, and charged me $689.00 just to break
down the engine to tell me the engine is worthless. They did bring out three
boxes of oily engine parts in cardboard boxes for me to take home. So this is
what I get for being a very loyal customer , a broken car and boxes of engine
parts. I pray that no one reading this will ever buy a Chrysler Product.

CAR FAILURE # 1,150 Sept. 21, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2003 dodge ram 1500 with the 4.7 liter v8 if that matters. After
reading some of the other complaints, I can't believe nothing has been done
about this. I have regular oil changes done, but one day I went to have the oil
changed and the mechanic said that there was a lot of sludge in the engine. He
recommended that I run a flush through to clean it out (bad idea). The truck was
fine for 3 more oil changes then the gauge started going crazy, so I brought it
back in to the mechanic. When he checked the pressure it was fine, so he said to
have the pressure switch changed. I did and the next day the engine just quit.
Now it sits at a Dodge dealership awaiting a rebuilt engine that the warranty
company will not touch, because to them it looks as though I never changed the
oil. It just sickens me to see how Dodge just erupted with all these new cars
and are giving this "GREAT" ,7yr-70,000 mile warranty that doesn't mean a damn
thing when it comes down to it. They have given people trust in their vehicles
just long enough to get them off the lot, after that they just don't care what
happens. I have also listed a complaint with The Center For Auto Safety in hope
that somebody will help not just me, but everyone who has been dealt a raw deal
by these clowns at Dodge/Chrysler.

2001 2.7 L engine.15 miles after oil change enginge failed $6500.00 to fix
at dealership.
Did the work myself for under $1500.00. only 36,200 miles. the dealer knew the
problem befor i towed it into the shop. i was told that the oil was not changed
at the required miles (BULL) upon examination i found the heat from the exhaust
system is cracking the oil pan and bakeing the oil into a vapor. the vapor then
condences in the upper parts of the engine. when oil is added the sludge then
fall's into the oil pan and cloggs the pick-up tube. total engine failure...
CAR FAILURE # 1,148 Sept. 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
2004 Intrepid engine died on the interstate after pressure on the gas pedal
vanished. I pulled to the shoulder, stopped, when I put the gear from 'drive' to
'park', a metal on metal thump thump thump noise sounded from the gear. I called
a friend who used to own a repair shop. He said that if it restarted to drive to
the nearest place to have it serviced. The check engine light was on. Since I
have a bumper to bumper extended warranty to 85,000, I drove directly to a Dodge
dealer. They put on a new CAM sensor and collected the deductable. Just 6 miles
off the lot the CEL reappeared. I returned the car to the dealer. They have
reproduced the failure of the engine at highway speed, yet cannot determine a
cause. Both the O2 sensor and fuel system errrors appear, yet after further
inspection, neither the sensors nor the fuel system components are bad. They
will not replace anything unless they know it is the cause of the engine failue.
They have had my car for over 6 days and can come up with nothing. It would seem
that with a full warranty, they would have to replace the entire fuel system,
and electronic sensors, or what ever else the cause might be. There is a well
treated car with 38.000 miles that is a life-threatening hazard on the highway,
and we are having a stale mate. They won't fix - I won't drive. Do you see a way
out, AND what is this engine failure class action suit anyway. I replaced a 2001
ES with 92,000 that was never a problem with the 2004 that is a big problem.

To All Chrysler/Dodge Owners:
From: www.DontBuyOne.com
It appears the Chrysler's armor plated customer dis-service department is

do it now.
3)---- If you know anyone who works for a car dealership, especially a

New & Used Car Buyers Beware !!! - Before you buy a Chrysler or Dodge read the letters from owners who have already lost between $4,000 to $6,000 because they had to replace their low mileage engines, most had under 80,000 miles. Daimler-Chrysler will not accept any responsibility for these engine failures even though the Washington D.C. based Center for Auto Safety as well as private mechanics nationwide recognize the catastrophic problem with these engines. When you buy a Chrysler, you are on your own. Chrysler was bought out in 2000 by the German company Daimler-Benz, makers of the Mercedes which is also having quality control issues and losing many sales to Lexus. Incidentally Mercedes recently extended engine warranty for Mercedes owners with engine sludge failure but offers nothing to Chrysler & Dodge owners !
When quality control issues began to appear Daimler-Benz tried to get out of the Chrysler Company purchase but could not. After losing the court battle to recall their take over of Chrysler, Daimler-Chrysler has adopted a stonewall policy of denying any knowledge of the 2.7L engine problems and other issues. Virtually every person we have heard from has the same story - their dealership had never heard of any problems with the 2.7L engine and even more unbelievable never noticed any problems while these cars were being serviced and inspected during the warranty period. Today Chrysler and Dodge salesmen will tell you, "we haven't heard about any problems with the 2.7". We have emailed hundreds of Dodge and Chrysler dealerships nationwide, customers have told them, they are simply lying or ignorant.
Oil sludge is generally the result of very poor maintenance and it usually takes quite some time for the problem to develop. Missing one or two oil changes is not going to cause this type of problem and certainly not on engines with such low mileage. A bad engine design and faulty warranty servicing is bad but much much worse is a car company that will not fix or admit serious defects.
We have heard from both Mercedes and Chrysler owners and they are not a happy group. If you sell your cars before the factory warranty runs out you might like a Chrysler or Dodge. Don't buy a used one because like the many financially devastated owners below looking at a Chrysler or Dodge in your driveway is all you may be able to do with it after is has a few more miles on it. Toyota had a similar issue with some of their engine designs but they fixed the problem and took care of their customers. These people are still buying Toyotas - the same will not be true for German Chryslers - bad engine design and customer service at its absolute worse.
Be wary
of buying used
Chrysler or Dodge Cars - Warning - after what we have seen we advise extreme
caution before buying any used Chrysler
or Dodge particularly one with the 2.7L engine. Extended warranties are refusing
coverage blaming the consumer for 'improper maintenance' . You cannot
detect sludge in these engines unless they are torn down and fully inspected
at a cost of about $400. We understand the PT Cruisers are now
experiencing similar oil related problems.

IMPORTANT ALERT - Be wary of compensation offers.
01/19/05 -
1st report of settlement offer: $7,000 plus repair costs
submitted - $2,935 offered by Chrysler
01/21/05 -
2nd report of settlement offer: $6,000 plus out of pocket
costs submitted - $1,338.21 offered by Chrysler
We are not certain what Daimler-Chrysler is
doing now but we are concerned that when owners offer their records before
Chrysler publicly declares a 'Compensation Criteria' that Chrysler can and
will disqualify as many applicants as they can by changing their
compensation criteria on a case by case basis. The representative that
called us said that every case is different which suggests that once a owner
submits their circumstances Chrysler will change or modify their 'in house
criteria' to disqualify or reduce a settlement amount. The other
possibility is that Chrysler is on a fishing trip to gather information and
the develop a criteria that will disqualify the greatest number.
We are told that this group is an arbitration firm working for Chrysler. We have not had any reports of satisfactory settlements however it is often a part of a negotiated agreement that the consumer is not allowed to discuss the settlement terms. Remember this company is hired by Chrysler and it their job to pay out as little as possible. They talk nice to you not because they like you or care about your situation but because they want you to think that they are on your side. They are professional negotiators that do this everyday and the less they pay out to consumers the more work they will get. Visit the websites below and get some knowledge before you make any deals. It is always better to go to a knife fight with a body guard and you may want to talk to an attorney about negotiating for you if you can find one that will do it for a reasonable price.
If Daimler-Chrysler publicly declares as they should a "Compensation Criteria" then they will not be able to so easily back away on a case by case basis. It is easy to win at poker when you can see the other player's hand but they cannot see yours. If Daimler-Chrysler is sincere they will publicly state the conditions that will qualify owners for compensation and then let the owners provide their proof. That is what every other legitimate car company has done including Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford and GM.
Chrysler needs to stop acting like a two-bit card shark and start behaving like a responsible adult. For those of you that wish to call this group that is apparently representing Daimler-Chrysler, the number that was reported to us is 1-866-332-3746 Ext 483.
