CAR FAILURE # 199 November 15, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure 76,000 miles
In April of 2002 I bought a 2001 Dodge Intrepid with approx 32,000 miles on it. For purposes of tracking patterns, the VIN# is ................ By Oct 2003 I began having all kinds of problems. The car began dying on me on a regular basis (this went on for weeks) and the check engine light would stay on. The tach and speedometer would spike and then the car would die. I would have it towed to the mechanic but it was an intermittent problem that the mechanic had trouble diagnosing. He changed the alternator because it wasn't charging, the transmission computer went out, then the transmission went out while traveling to Oneonta, Al. ($250 towing bill from Greenville) and had to be rebuilt at 76,000 mi., brakes had to be put on TWICE in the last year, evaporator purge solenoid had to be replaced, PCV valve had to be replaced because the hoses swelled and blew, NOW radiator fluid is leaking from the top of engine (Dodge wants $200+ to repair) and the engine oil seems to have water in it, this I just found this out yesterday and am beyond frustration with this car. So, far not including the radiator fluid leak and having the engine oil problem checked for water, I have spent almost $2000 on repairs and $390 just on towing. I also just had new tires put on, which is understandable when normal maintenance has to be done. But its hard to pay car note and for routine maintenance when this lemon of a car keeps developing problems. I hope something can be done to get some relief with the engine repairs.

CAR FAILURE # 198 November 15, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure 77,000 miles
My Dodge Intrepid died at 77,493 miles. The timing chain jumped causing engine failure do to improper maintenance as I was told by Chrysler (engine sludge). The vehicle was maintained according to the owner manual and I have receipts. This did not matter to Chrysler.
My VIN # is:................

CAR FAILURE # 198 November 15, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

CAR FAILURE # 196 November 15, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I had a 99 intrepid and the engine failed at a stop sign. My father had the car before me, and we both are sure we changed the oil every 3000 miles. It failed due to sludge build up and timing control failure, a problem it seems like a lot of people had. I brought it to my local dodge dealer service center initially, told them i heard a clanking sound from the engine. They said they had "no idea" what it could be and would have to tear down the engine to find out. 250$ later, they said i had the sludge problem and the engine had to be scrapped. Do you think this is fair? Shouldn't they have known about the problem before they tore it down and at least informed me? Aren't there easier ways to determine if this engine has the problem than tearing it down? I'm considering asking for my money back because they either lied to me, or were incompetent (if this problem is as common as it appears to be). I also called Daimler-Chrysler and the rep I spoke with said it was "not a common problem". I asked if a dodge service center would be aware of this problem, and he "could not say". i'm not sure what to do at this point ... do you think a service center would be aware of this problem?
thanks,
Ryan G.

CAR FAILURE # 195 November 12, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

I purchased a 1999 2.7 Dodge Intrepid May of 2003. I also purchased the extended warranty "bumper to bumper " which still is in affect. Two weeks ago the timing chain failed therefore so did the engine. The extended warranty company said they have to send out an adjuster to look at the vehicle. Any advice on my rights.
Thanks

CAR FAILURE # 193 November 12, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure 75,000 miles
I also have a Engine that locked up, oil sledge caused this, at 75,000 I have maintained the oil change as directed and also the Rack and Pinion Gear went out a week before this, it cost about $800.00 to fix this then the engine went out, Can't find a engine to replace this one, and still owe the bank $4,000 for this dodge junk. IM located in Nashport Ohio. Now have to make payments on a car that won't run.

CAR FAILURE # 192 November 11, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure 74,500 miles
I  too have a problem my my 2000 Chrysler intrepid with 124, 000 km (74,532 miles) on it. Chrysler will not honor my extended warranty, citing that my service records are not adequate. I have problems with the lifters and valves, and possibly the timing chain. My oil change receipts lack the serial number of my car, therefore Chrysler will not do warranty repair on my engine..

CAR FAILURE # 191 November 10, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure 83,000 miles

I recently lost the motor in my concord, it only had 83000 miles. What do I do? This is not normal for a farly new vehicle to give up like this?

CAR FAILURE # 190 November 09, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure 63,000 miles
I am the owner of a 1998 Chrysler Concorde purchased new with appx 63,000 miles on it. The car is primarily used by my wife as transport to and from work, roughly 28 - 30 miles daily, 24 - 26 of which are freeway miles with minimal levels of congestion. I have consistently changed the oil well within the manufacturers guidelines, using top quality products, primarily Mobile 1 since around 20,000 miles, a product surpassing manufacturers requirements even at extended service intervals. Around 6 - 7 weeks ago, I had an oil change service performed, opting due to time constraints to use a reputable local jobber instead of my normal self service. Less than 1 week later, what I believe to be the initial failure of the Oil Pump resulted in engine damage including, but probably not limited to, the Crankshaft and Piston Rod Bearings. Cursory examination of the Oil Filler tube as well as post removal examination of the Oil Pan Sump revealed significant sludge deposits. The quantity of buildup far exceeded that which would be consistent with an engine of similar mileage, service and climatic environment. Estimated repair costs range from $4,000 for engine replacement to a minimum of $1,200 in parts if I perform the repairs myself, not to mention the value of my labor, special tool rentals and the cumulative costs resultant from loss of use of the vehicle. The immediate need for reliable transport combined with the anticipated down time involved in effecting major repairs limited our options to the outright purchase of a used vehicle for the interim, an additional expense of slightly over $2,500. I have just this evening become aware of your interest in this particular anomaly and would like to learn more regarding your efforts and intentions.

CAR FAILURE # 189 November 08, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure 64,000 miles
An unreasonable and unacceptable engine failure, due to design flaws of the Dodge Intrepid(2.7/dohc) has brought me here for complaint. While Daimler Chrysler sits back and looks at their 2.7/dohc engine failures as acceptable. I do not..
My family and I are financial victims of yet another blown engine at an extremely low 64,000 miles. Our 2001 Dodge Intrepid had just turned 3 yrs old before it met its>"untimely death".As the "timing chain" gave way without warning, the car barely made it to the side of the road.Leaving us an estimated $4,600.00 engine replacement bill with another $3000.00 left on the note. The final analasys:(Blown timing chain/engine failure due to sludge build up.)
Oh,and let Chrysler tell me "I should have changed the engine oil more often, and I'll cram the service notes up their tailpipe!" I have had several oil and lube services performed on our vehicle faithfully. I have spoken with excellent certified mechanics and several engine specialists. What they have all reported is that Chrysler will not admit to the design flaw of their(2.7/ dohc)engines. When the timing chain goes on a dohc engine the cams and gears will continue to turn, slamming lifters and pistons together to a final grinding finale.(Unlike the old system of lifters and rods) Sludging of the cars engine is due to heat and wear(regardless) of the amount of oil changes. Oh yes,oil changes most certainly help every 3,000 miles...but a 24VALVE/ DOHC engine has a lot of moving parts which means alot of "heat",which will eventually lead to "sludge build up." But let's talk sensible here... at 64,000 miles or lower, these $15-20,000 vehicles should not be considered by the manufacturer as the equivelent of a .99 cent disposible lighter.

CAR FAILURE # 188 November 08, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure 81,000 miles
My Dodge Intrepid just hit 81,000 when the engine overheated & the car died on my way home from work. I live less than 10 miles. I have not taken the car to the repair shop yet due to the amount of money it will cost me to repair the vehicle. Whatever the problem, there is now coolant in the oil and my engine is completely dead. It will turn over but soon dies and sounds VERY rough. I still owe $4600 on the vehicle and I’m told that in running condition it’s only worth $3500 retail. I’m looking at least $4000 or more to have a new engine put in with the fear that it will happen again down the line. At this time I have no vehicle. Please e-mail me back if you’re interested in my information.

CAR FAILURE # 186 November 07, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My 2001 Intrepid engine locked up on me almost 2 weeks ago. I had it towed to my selling dealer (Nissan) and they tore it apart. My warranty company was called in and they came to the conclusion that the engine had locked up because the oil hadn't been been changed...it was a Jello like substance in the oil pan. Needless to say, my warranty company won't cover the cost of replacing the engine, or the tow fee, rental car fee and labor. I've already spent $700.00 for just having it looked at and diagnosed, I have yet to buy the engine. My father found this web-site and told me about it....so here I am.

CAR FAILURE # 185 November 05, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
On Nov 3, 2004, I was driving my two youngest children to school. I was on an interstate highway traveling 55 mph, in light rain when my engine started tapping loudly, the oil light came on and then the engine light and then the car shut down. All of this happened within one minute, at over 50 mph. Luckily there was a wide soft shoulder that I was able to coast on to. I proceeded to bring the car to a stop where I tried to restart the car, unsuccessfully. I called for a tow truck and had the car taken to Chrysler. They told me my engine was sludged and that I would need a replacement for 6500$ I couldn't afford that so I had to roll the remaining loan left on the car, 9,150$ worth into a lease on another car. They only gave me 3000$ trade in on a 2000 luxury Concorde with 56000 miles. That was disgusting. My VIN number was ............... As soon as this lease thing with this jeep liberty is over I will never trust Chrysler again. If my wife was driving when this happened, i am afraid she would not have been able to handle the car in that weather and in that speed. I was told that this damage was my fault because I didn't maintain the car, but my garage is full of equipment that I oil change and maintain my vehicles. I have a 96 Plymouth with 130,000 miles. My last two cars, both Dodge/Chrysler products, had over 120,000 before I moved on to the Concorde and the Plymouth. I think that attests to my maintaining cars and the failure of this 2.7 liter garbage. I hope you can help us. Thank you,

CAR FAILURE # 183 November 05, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure 47,000 miles
On 10/29/04 I was returning from Syracuse on Interstate 81 with 4 children. Traffic was very heavy as it was the rush hour traffic. As I drove close to Cortland, my destination, the car started to "clang". I immediately exited the nearest exit and drove unto a field and called for help. My husband came and we called AAA to tow it to a local mechanic. The car would not start at this time. The mechanic determined that the engine had to be replaced. There was no oil on the dipstick, even though an oil change had been performed on 9/20/04. We had no warning, no dash light or anything to indicate the oil pressure was being lost. The only warning was the one that was too late when "check engine" light came on when the car completely broke down. Our mileage was less than 47000 and we always had the car serviced correctly. Therefore, we are quite upset that we had no warning to avoid having to spend over 5000 to have our car repaired. Needless to say we were very fortunate we did not have a severe accident or cause an accident on the highway.

My 2001 dodge intrepid just shut down while we were driving home. Luckily for us we were only minutes from our driveway and were able to coast into it. The car now just takes up space in the garage until we decide what to do with it. The cause was oil sludge.

To Whom It May Concern,
I only wished I had found this site before I purchased a 2002 Dodge Intrepid for my son in April of 2004. In August he started having a problem where the car would just cut off for no reason while sitting at stop lights and such. We took the car in for repair and they replaced the cam sensor. My son drove it over the weekend and noticed that the car wasn't running right and it made a rattling/clicking noise whenever he would go to start it. We took it back to the repair shop and they said it was a timing chain issue and wouldn't know if the warranty company (we bought an easy care plan) would cover it until they tore down the engine. Taking a gamble (because we obviously just couldn't let a 10,000.00 car just sit) we ok'd the tear down. They discovered that the timing chain was loose and the engine had spun two bearings. The warranty company refused to cover it because we could only prove one oil change out of the two oil changes we had done to the car. It has been sitting in the repair lot since September and it is now November. I thank you for the contact info and if you need anymore information I will be more than happy to give it. This whole situation has made me ill and stressed me to no end.
Respectfully,
Martha B.

CAR FAILURE # 180 November 04, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure 48,000 miles
I own a 1999 or 2000 intrepid - It has 48.5 K miles on it - we have changed oil standardly - have really had no problems with it had it into Palmer Dodge of Atlanta in Jan 2004 - 30,000 check up plus tons of other stuff..no oil leaks -no nothing. One day the oil light blinks - the very next day I take it in for oil and filter change and they tell me I need a new engine -we have verified with 2 independant techs and they say the same thing. Palmer Dodge of Roswell says tough - out of warranty..it is 1 1/2 year over yearly warranty but under the 50k warranty...

The VIN # on my 2000 Dodge Intrepid is .............. The Timing chain snapped on mine at approx 53,000 miles. At about 63,000 mile it started making the same noise. When I took it in they told me the tensioner was about ready to snap again causing the timing chain to snap. They did fix that but both times they has my vehicle for a month. Thanks for the information on this.

CAR FAILURE # 177 November 02, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My engine failed while driving a year ago, September 2003. I was exiting off of I75 going approx. 65 mph. This car has put me in a huge financial HARD SPOT!! I recently have been trying to trade this car in, but with a negative of approx. $7000.00, my car payment in a new car (FORD FOCUS) would be around $650.00 a month, well paying that should put me behind the wheel of a Lexus, right? I feel I have been backed into a corner by Chrysler/Dodge. I am a single mother who needs out of this car. Everyday I wake up and wonder "When will it seize again?" I now drive to work with my interior lights blinking off and on, as if my car is possessed by the devil. I have not only replaced the engine but the timing chain, water pump, (3) starters, cooling fan........My windows will not work at times, it stalls for no reason and then re-starts about 15 min. later. Its been one thing after another with this car and I cannot take this ..... anymore. I need some kind of mental assistance please let me know of any new info. AND to add I have contacted Chrysler, I was told that they would NOT help and when I asked why someone told me that they would send my file to corporate to be reviewed, I was told that it was to get me off the phone and then hung up on, I have contacted Chrysler several times and all I got was rude comments and that was NO where, I hope that everyone will soon get compensated for all their trouble including myself.  Thank You so much for your time,
Amy S.

I am not sure if the problem I am experience would be considered engine failure. However, I am currently experiencing the following problem: Morning starts are delayed--- Ignition turns over several times without connection and during the fourth or so attempt, the car starts. I own a 1999 Chrysler Concorde LX. My sister owns a 2003 Dodge Intrepid and she is experience an identical problem.

CAR FAILURE # 175 November 01, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I purchased a used 2000 Intrepid with 42,500 miles in May of 2002, within 10 days, the cam chains went out, leaving me stranded in the parking lot at work. The dealership, where I bought the vehicle, picked it up and fixed it within 3 days. It was three weeks later, when the car just died while driving. No noise, no clanking or knocking, just died. Had it towed to the dealership for $150. The mileage was at approx. 43,700 miles. They informed me that it died due to sludge in the engine and that because it was after the 30 warranty the dealership offered, I had to use the extended warranty I purchased which was another $250 deductible. After minimal problems, now at 83,900 miles on Oct. 23rd, 2004, the same problem has re-occurred. Only now I do not have an extended warranty. I was quoted a price of $5,600 from a reputable service shop and a quote of $6,700 from a Dodge dealership. I still owe nearly $9,000 on the vehicle and cannot afford to fix the engine. I am in need of help as I need some type of transportation and am "borrowing" a truck (Chevy) to use for work until I can purchase another vehicle.

CAR FAILURE # 174 November 01, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Oil light came on without any other warning. Stopped car to check oil and it was full. Car would not start. Called dealer and told him what happened, they asked for oil change receipts even before the saw the car. Towed it to dealer who charged $230 to take engine apart so the extended warranty company could come in to see it. They denied the claim because of lack of maintenance. I bought the car used and it had 21,000 miles on it. The first time I took it to have the oil changed they told me it had sludge. I paid to have the engine cleaned and changed the oil every 3,000 to 4,000 miles myself after that.  When I called Chrysler to see about them covering it I was greeted with the person telling me I should have taken my oil pan off to check for problems when I changed my oil. ..................Is everyone in Detroit in on this conspiracy? Now I am stuck owing $5,500 on a car I can't drive or sell. I called a junk yard about selling it to them and they said the best they could do would be $600. The man said he gets about 3 calls a week about the intrepid either someone getting rid of one or looking for an engine. So here the car sits in my garage while I try to find something to get me back and forth to work.

Hi, I've been out of my 2000 Dodge Intrepid for going on 2 years now, and It's very miserable to get around. I usually have to use my daughters' car to take care of my business. My car got oil changes on the regular, @ this Chrysler Plymouth/Dodge dealership. I got my oil changes whenever It was due. So, my last oil change I received was a turn for the worst. I got it done, and the same day my engine gave out, which the Dodge dealership people claim it was due to an oil sludge, and my opinion on that was if it was due to an oil sludge, why wasn't I informed ahead of time to prevent this problem. Well now, I'm in need of an engine that is going to cost me over $3,000.00 dollars to get done, and that money is hard to come by so hopefully you can be of help to me, and I can be of help to the others in my situation. My VIN # is as follows : .................. Please feel free to email me with further information on this problem that you may have or need.. Thanks in advance!

CAR FAILURE # 168 October 30, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I don't even know where to begin. I purchased my new 2002 Concorde from the dealer in November of 2001. I was back at the service department within 6 months with a check engine light. I have been back at least 6 times in the past 3 years. Each time it's a different problem triggering the light. Today I was making a left out of the bank parking lot into heavy traffic when the car wouldn't drive. It's making a high pitched sound and wouldn't go into gear. I coasted to the side of the road and call roadside assistance and was told sorry! You are at 40,000 miles and your warranty ran out at 36,000. I'm waiting now for a tow truck to drag it to the dealer to hear what the latest problem is. I can't buy a new car because I still owe about $8,000 on this lemon and it's only worth about that much (if it all). After speaking with another dealer, they told me that I should have used the lemon law but I was unaware. What recourse do we have in these matters? I'm a single parent and can't afford an exorbitant repair bill or a new car. It's just about 3 yrs old now.  Any direction is greatly appreciated.

My husband and I are pretty decent human-beings. We give to charity, and always help others when we can. We go to work every day, pay more than our fare share of taxes, love our friends and family, and obey the laws. I also realize that in bigger scheme of things if the only bad thing happening in our lives is this broken car, then life is not so bad. However, the picture does change slightly when I realize that we are not the only consumer victim of the Daimler Crysler Corporation. Now I am mad. Please add our story and names to your already long list of unhappy and cheated Chrysler customers!  I will follow up with our consumer complaints against Chrysler, and plan on launching a very campaign against the their corporation and products. And you never know, sometimes we little folks have the most surprising contacts...
Thanks for putting this information out there.

Bought a 2001 Chrysler Sebring with 32000 miles from a Chrysler dealer in late August 2004. On October 25, a different Chrysler dealer diagnosed a rapping noise: Engine sludge build-up. I need a new engine. But because the car had 37,000 miles on it,. neither the dealer nor Chrysler is standing behind it. They say I should have bought the extended warranty, but the web is full of complaints that Chrysler won't fix the problem even under warranty. They claim poor maintenance -- even with people who can show receipts for 3000-mile oil change intervals.

I own a 2001 Dodge Intrepid---A couple of weeks ago--the engine started tapping-- I immediately called the dodge dealer I purchased the auto at---They wanted me to bring it in and stated it would cost $2000 to take the engine out to check it--then it would cost more for any repairs needed. The auto no longer is under warrenty. I then took it to a auto shop.--They said the engine was full of sludge They attempted to remove most of the sludge and replaced the oil pump--Total cost $648---Then the news--I was told I needed a new engine--I then was told it would cost at least $4000 to install a engine----I am still paying on this auto through Chryler financial. I contacted several dealers about tradind in this auto HA_HA. Now I have to pay serious money to get back on the road. By the way did I say I was a working man. $4000 WOW !

I unfortunately made the mistake of purchasing a used 2001 Dodge Intrepid. I still owe $10,000 on it and now I need to replace an engine for $3-5,000!!! And they all (dealer) act like they know nothing about these engines! I'm a single dad, now broke, and not knowing which way to turn. Who can help??!!

CAR FAILURE # 159 October 25, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Same story, I have taken care of my car with Oil changes every 3000 miles, Transmission fluid changes every 24,000. 73,000 miles the water pump blows into engine crankcase dumping three gallons of antifreeze into engine block. Fried motor and cost $6500.00 for rebuilt one. Chrysler like you say blames my neglect of care. This word need to get around to make them responsible for this horrible care of their customers.

I have a 2001 Dodge Stratus. It has 73,000 miles on it. I had some brake problems and went in for that as well as an oil change. When I went to pick up my car. They told me I needed a new engine. It started knocking and now it has horrible noise. I took it to the dealership where I got it they said that those engines have a horrible record but the Chrysler company doesn’t do anything about it. I have found hundreds of things on the internet about this can’t anything be done? I am so sick! I still owe on this car and it is a piece of crap. I can’t afford another one, I don’t know what I am going to do. Chrysler company SHOULD be responsible! PLEASE HELP!

CAR FAILURE # 156 October 24, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I finally found a website about Chrysler/Dodge engines, all your stories about 2.7 engines are exactly what happen to me about 2 years ago. I had a 2000 Dodge Intrepid 2.7L with only 31,000 kilometers on it, the motor blew up from sludge build up, fought with Chrysler and they said owners neglect, no warranty, just like they said to everyone else having these problems. So I put a used engine in the car and traded it for a Ford. Never buy a Chrysler product AGAIN!

I too am a victim of the infamous 2.7 litre engine failure (Aug. 7th, 2004). Just after my wife pulled over to park the car, there was a terrible clattering sound as she turned off the engine. It would not restart. No oil pressure warning light came on nor was there any other kind of failure indicated. I had checked the oil before she left on this 48-mile trip. It looked clean and there was the right amount in the crankcase. The oil had been changed in late March and the reminder notice from the lubrication shop just came in the mail. Although we had traveled many miles since the last oil change, it did not seem overdue and I did not expect major engine failure to result from this. I have always used the 5W-30 oil the manufacturer recommends. And I have always tried to keep the same brand in it (Penzoil).

I have a 2000 Intrepid with 40,000 miles and it started knocking last week, the rpm's went off the scale and it shut down. I had it towed to the dealers. They replaced 2 sensors and said it was ok. When I got it back it started knocking again and shut down while idling. I returned it to the dealer and know they are saying I probably need a new engine and because there is sludge in it I failed to maintain it and it isn't covered.

CAR FAILURE # 142 October 17, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
At 41,000 miles my 98 Intrepid stopped with no warning, had to tow. Dodge dealership in NC had me prove my oil had been changed as suggested, because oil sludge was the problem. I proved oil changes, paid $500.00 deductible for the dealership insurance and they replaced the motor. Meantime I have replaced six window motors and the air conditioning will not work unless it is on high, replaced both fan motors, other costly engine repairs. Second motor at 80,000 miles stopped while driving, no warning. Had this motor rebuilt, guides and tensioners, timing. Timing belt was 4" longer than the one replaced. Oil sludge build-up was all over timing parts and internal parts. After this first motor I made sure at 3000 miles oil was changed. 150 miles after second rebuild, car stopped again and when checked the oil pump pick-up was clogged with oil sludge. They soaked the part for six hours and was able to clean it and put it back on. Now I have to use Mobil 1 15w-50 for my oil changes and get oil changed every 1000 miles. What in the world do I need to do about this and where do I report this?
Thanks

CAR FAILURE # 141 October 16, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My wife was driving the car and it suddenly stopped working causing her to be in the middle of a multi-lane road and in danger of being hit by rush hour traffic. The car was towed to the auto shop where they discovered the water pump had broken, causing metal fragments to fall into the oil pan. The timing chain jumped a gear on the water pump and causing the engine to quit working without warning. The car is a 2001 Dodge Intrepid with a 2.7L V6 engine. The car has 59,009 miles. Parts required to repair the damage include: Camshaft sensor, valve cover gasket, upper manifold gasket, timing chain tensioner, water pump, both cam shaft sensors. Cost of repairs $1087.70. My mechanic said that if it had not broken down like it did, it probably would of blown the engine.

CAR FAILURE # 139 October 15, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

We have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid which we bought new. It had less than 60,000 miles on it when the engine blew. It cost almost $6,000 to repair it. We were told that we were not covered by warranty and that we must have let the engine overheat. Isn't that why there is a "check engine " light??? It didn't go on until the engine blew - if it over heated why didn't the engine light go on prior? We have driven Dodges for 30 yrs. NEVER again. I have been told that the 2.7 liter engine had not been tested for enough time. Now - they want to blame owners for their inaptitude. AND look at the resale value on them - others know and they don't want them either.

Hello, I just came across your website and found it very interesting. I was driving my 1998 Intrepid and all of a sudden I heard the engine starting to grind. I was able to pull over but it was too late. I have taken my car into a garage and the engine has seized. The result, No oil. The oil light never came on and I had just checked in about 4,000 km before hand. I am at a loss now because I now need to have the engine completely rebuilt which will cost about $4,000 +. I take very good care of my cars and am quite disappointed with what has happened. I am not sure where I can go from here. Any guidance would help.

My husband found this web site and so I decided to send this email. I was not aware of the engine problems in Dodge Intrepids and others before it happened to me, but I wish I would have been. All of the warning signs described on the web site were there. It was a scary experience when it did happen since I was just exiting off a busy interstate (a fairly sharp turn) with two young children when the engine seized. Now we don't know what to do with this car that is not even worth fixing even though it was very well kept! It is very frustrating and we will NEVER buy another Dodge/Chrysler car again!

I own a 200 Dodge Intrepid. Last year (10/15/03) the oil in the engine failed to return through the return holes and caused the timing chain and other parts to fail. The car was repaired. Almost one year later (10/12/04) the engine again developed an oil problem and now the bearings and some rods and crankshaft are ruined making the engine and car worthless. All scheduled maintenance on the car was performed religiously by the dealer and I still had these problems. Unfortunately I have just learned that this is a widely known problem and the cost of repair is prohibitive. What really cranks me is that I will be paying on the car loan until August. I am very seriously considering stop paying the loan and let Chrysler repossess the car. How can a manufacturer produce a faulty engine that causes danger and
millions of dollars and get away with it?

I have been fuming over this for at least a year and half. I still have the vehicle but can't bring myself to spend the money to buy a refurbished engine. I was just getting off the interstate when all of a sudden, I lost power. Luckily, I was able to coast into a parking lot. All of this happened in the middle of a severe rain storm. I also experienced problems with the a/c and had to get that fixed. Also, complained about the seat feeling like the bolts were loose and was told it was ok. There is a slight movement in the seat. I just read another site where that is a recall item.
I appreciate what you are doing.

Please email me back with any information available to maybe get a reimbursement on this.

Hi here is my info ..99 Chrysler Intrepid, catastrophic engine failure Aug 16th 2004(On I-5 going through Sacramento towards Disneyland) due to a connecting rod at 75,000 km.....
I was able to rebuild it myself as I was able to use most of the parts and the machine shop was able to recondition the crank and block. In the process of trying to find used parts from auto wreckers and core supply houses, however, I became aware that all in the business are aware of the high failure rate. A worker at the core supply said he went through two pallets of 2.7 cranks, and could not find one that had not spun a rod bearing...The biggest auto wrecker in B.C. informed me that if he had a "Runnable" engine in a wrecked car, it would be worth $5,000 cdn. with out a problem. Talk about supply and demand!
Thank you for your interest in this matter.

We bought our 1999 dodge intrepid new. 1 day the heater didnt work, and the next day the engine seized up when it had 16000 miles on it. We fought with them to get a new car, but they put a short block engine in it. Had nothing but troubles with it, burned a quart of oil a week. They said it was normal. 2 weeks ago, with 62000 miles on the vehicle now, the engine completely blew. We contacted chrylser dealer, they were completely rude, they told us we were out of our warranty and they had never heard of a problem with this motor. i had since heard of thousands of people who had problems with this motor. they were so rude that they wouldnt even give us chrysler corporations customer service number. It is gonna cost 4500 for a new motor to be put into it. i am totally disabled and cannot afford this. Thank you.

I bought a 2001 PT Cruiser with 38,500 miles on the odometer. After 2,300 miles the engine had consumed 2 quarts of oil. I had the dealership where I purchased the car do a consumption test also. After some serious conversations and threat of a lawsuit, the dealership(Ford) let me trade the vehicle for a Ford product(Focus). I realized about a $1,500 loss in the transaction, however I felt that the best decision was taking a smaller loss on a newer car better than putting more money into a older car with limited hope of solving the problem. The dealer indicated the PT Cruiser would go to an auto auction. Now some other poor consumer will stuck with the same problem. The VIN # on that vehicle is --------------.

CAR FAILURE # 110 October 06, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Hello,
I am writing you to tell you about my horrendous experience with a supposed "american car." I purchased the intrepid in June of 2002 from a used dealership in Virginia Beach with a supposed warranty. Three weeks later my 4 yr old son and i were driving on Interstate 95 in N.C. and the car blew up on fire (the engine). I pulled over, got my child out and ran..... I am a single mom who works very hard, i paid cash for the car, but am out of a car. I did fix the engine and almost 2 weeks later the transmission failed. I refused to put any more dollars into that car so it has been sitting for almost 2 yrs at a mechanics while i am driving a 1990 toyota camry with double the miles and has never left me stranded. I have friends who had intrepids with the same problems. I am glad i researched this and found out they are a German company. That sure explains a lot to me.

I have a Concorde with the 2.7 engine that has 75,800 miles and the timing has jumped not one tooth, but numerous. I purchased this car 2.5 years ago at the local Chrysler dealer which this vehicle was a program car. in 1998 I purchased a brand new concord, and let that car go, and bought a used one because I did not want the high car payment. I only have 5 payments left, but now can not afford to fix this problem which will cost 7,000 plus. I called the 800-992-1997 number and the man said, sorry out of warranty, can't help, and hung up. I have heard that this engine problem has hit the media. this is my only vehicle and I work 15 miles out of town, which is a
long walk. I need help.

CAR FAILURE # 105 October 05, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I started my car a few weeks ago like I do every morning and heard a knocking sound from the engine. I took my wife's car to work that day. When I came home, I took the car to an auto mechanic that has worked on my cars in the past. He said it sounds bad. He thought it sounded as if the timing chain or the tension bracket might be the problem. When he took off the oil cap he noticed some sludge. He asked me if I changed the oil regularly. I assured him that I did. I have been changing oil on my cars, my parents car, my wife's mother and sister's cars for more than 20 years. We have never had a problem with the internal engine parts. These were not all new cars. Many were purchased used and had well over 100,000 miles. He gave me an estimate of $2500-3000 dollars. He said the heads were damaged as well and they needed replaced. He said he has never seen so much sludge in an engine.  Although my mechanic never gave me a reason to mistrust him, I went home that night and got on to the internet to see if anyone else had this problem. To my surprise, I found out I was not alone. If you can believe it, I feel lucky I only had to pay $3200 dollars instead of $6500 + that others are paying. The mechanic ordered new head, timing chain kit, head gasket kit ect., and completed the repair. He told me that this is not normal for a car with 59,000 miles to have this problem.

65,000 miles. It is sitting in my backyard with a broken timing chain. It was checked at by a MOPAR shop 1 week prior to the timing chain breaking. Oil was changed around every 3,000 to 3,500 miles. We can't afford to fix it at this time.

CAR FAILURE # 088 October 05, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

My first engine went at 35,490 miles, Chrysler replaced engine and gave me 12,000 miles or one year. Second engine went at 15,100 miles and of course over a year. Would not replace engine for free, best they could do was pay half. Cost me $2,144.00 plus towing charges. Had my car from June 25th got it back August 27th. Had no car for two months to get back and forth to work. Lost many hours and pay because of this inconvenience.

CAR FAILURE # 087 October 04, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

My story is much like everyone else's. I have a 2001 dodge intrepid that kicked the bucket with under 70,000 miles left due to sludge in the engine. I must not have changed my oil is what i have been told when trying to find prices for a new engine. Well it was changed and i am now left with a car that does not run and i still owe a pricely sum. I am trying to get my local news papers and channels to do a story to let everyone know about the problem with these engines because up until mine went i knew nothing at all about the problem so many people were having. If you have any suggestions as to what might be helpful in getting the word out about this i would greatly appreciate it. I am not taking this lying down and believe that Daimler Chrysler was faulty in just not letting us(2.7 engine owners) know about the flaw in this engine so we could have prevented it.

My first engine failed with sludged engine at 44,682 miles in Sept. 2002. Was rebuilt and failed again in April 2004 at 53,870 miles when the timing chain broke. I was told at that time that it looked like a bomb had gone off in the engine. Please keep me informed on the situation with Chrysler. I will continue to share my story with anyone who will listen. That engine is JUNK!

While driving home from Labor day vacation our 2001 Intrepid with a 2.7L engine died on the very busy thruway of PA. This was a very dangerous situation. We have taken excellent care of our car with all scheduled oil changes and other recommended repairs. We are facing over $6500.00 in repairs.

CAR FAILURE # 082 October 04, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

When I first heard a knocking noise. I had my mechanic look at the car. He told me about the oil sludge problem at that time. I believe the mileage was around 78,000 miles. He flushed the oil and changed the oil filters 3 times. Then he advised me to have my oil changed every 1000 miles for 6 months. Well, I was doing that but didn't get to do it for 6 months, because 3 months later, I had to put a new engine in my car. This cost me $ 4000, which I had to borrow and am now paying back. In addition to the engine, I had to rent a car for 3 weeks because it took that long to get the engine since they are in such demand. The rent a car cost me around $ 500.

CAR FAILURE # 079 October 04, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
50,125 miles. It is a shame that a car that has an oil change at 3,000 miles would have engine failure. The thing about not changing oil is a bunch of bull because we have a 1990 Gand Am with 150, 000 miles that still runs great. If we were people that did not keep a car up I don't believe we still would be driving this Gand Am. I had to sell my car to the junk yard because I was not going to put the same motor back into a car that could ( and probably would) have the same problem. I was thinking about putting a Jasper motor but did not want to sink a $6,000 into a car that should have lasted more than 50,000 miles. I will never buy a Chrysler product again. I have also told everyone I know about my problem. I have know several people that change there mind about purchasing a Chrysler when I told them to read the problem people have had with Chrysler on the internet.

Thank you for the information. I guess you know how frustrating this is. My mechanic who changed my oil every 3000 miles told me that there was no sludge and one of the cleanest engines he has seen in a long time. My Intrepid had all of 60,000 mile, I owed $7000.00 on it and to replace everything it was going to cost me $5000.00 and that's if they could find an engine. I guess what's worse is the dealer that you buy it from laughs at you and tells you he has never heard of any problems with the engine and the mechanic tells you that this is the third one this month.

My car only had 65,000 miles on it. the engine siezed up and then my wife left it on the side of the road and it was towed and now the place that towed the car wants about 5,000 to put a new motor in it plus storage 3,000 plus what i owe on the car loan 6,749 plus towing fee. I had to let the car go and now my credit is really messed up. So yes I would really like a shot at dodge intrepid engine builders or just plain dodge and hit them in their wallets.

1999 Dodge Intrepid with only 75,000 miles, I had the motor fixed , it cost me $3,500 and now I am having other problems, the car ran great for about two weeks and now it won't start unless you unplug the cam sensor, I can't believe CHRYSLER can build such a piece of junk, you would think they would admit they have a problem and fix it, I have bought Chrysler products since 1985 and have been very happy with the service, but if this is the way they want to treat a loyal customer I guess I will have to start buying Chevys or Fords. Its ashame to think that they call this an AMERICAN product, hey Chrysler do the right thing and just fix the problem.

1999 Dodge Intrepid which suffered engine failure due to excessive sludge build-up @ only 74,000 miles. The engine failed at expressway speeds on July 29, 2003 creating a serious life-threatening situation. Estimates to repair were $6,000 to $6,500. I had a loan balance of $7,800 on car at time of failure. I eventually sold the car a year later for $600.

CAR FAILURE # 065 October 01, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I filed a report to the NHSTA. I brought a Dodge Intrepid in 2001 brand new and the engine first went at around 63,000 miles. A price was quoted of $8,000 for the new engine and $4,000 for the used. My extended warranty company would not pick up the tab because they said I neglected the car. But I changed my oil and even flushed the engine. I laid out $1,900.00 for an extended warranty to Heritage Insurance co. which they flat out denied my claim. They did however refund about $800.00 of my warranty back to me. So I had to go with a used engine at a cost of $4300.00. The engine ran for another 5,000 mile and was blown again at 68,000. This time I was told that a 2.7 litre engine with a 7-70 warranty was available for $6000. So now I put this engine in my car, so far so good. But since then I've fallen on
hard times. I'm losing my house because I had to gather the funds to fix the engine because I needed the car to go to work. I now live in an apartment and my house is in foreclosure. Also car rentals were $970.00. I have all my paperwork. So why buy American when America seem to no longer exist. Never will I buy another Chrysler. Yet I'm compelled to say this. The service at Dodge Of Paramus was top shelf and until this situation is taken care of my hats off to the Service Department
Thank you For your service,
Ron E.

My 99 Intrepid motor spun a rod and seized the engine at about 74,000 miles. My mechanic put in a used engine and now my engine light goes on intermittently. I expect this engine is not long for this world either. Anything I can do about it?

CAR FAILURE # 063 September 30, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
The 2.7 L engine in my Intrepid failed about two weeks ago. I was accelerating onto the interstate when I experienced a complete loss of power. I was thrown forward and caught by the restraint. Then the engine rebounded with a loud knock. My mechanic thinks it "spun a bearing" and the engine must be replaced. if this had happened in traffic who knows
what would have happened. While trying to find a used engine I was advised not to use an engine from a wreck as they aren't worth it. This advice came from a salvage yard owner who will not resell the engines because he gets too many complaints. A remanufactured 2.7L was quoted at $4600 + labor. It is a 1999 Intrepid with 103K miles. synthetic oil was used in it and it was changed every 5K to 6K miles. I do not expect that I will ever purchase another Chrysler
product.

I own a 2000 dodge intrepid.I bought it used from the dealer, it ran good and we did regular maintainance above and beyond, of course never thought to save receipts for oil filters and oil. My engine started making a nasty knocking tapping kind of noise, we bought a bottle of oil engine helper stuff and changed the oil early, this was good for about 2 weeks, the engine then started getting very loud and rattly, I had to have it towed to a local mechanic who phoned the other day and said timing chain, heads and valve replacement to the tune of 2000 dollars. I'm still making payments! aye carumba, what a hardship this has been and is.I wrote my local dodge/chrysler dealer for help but haven't heard back yet.{just yesterday}

CAR FAILURE # 061 September 29, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have only had my car for two years as of September 19th, 2004. I have always done the neccessary preventative maintenance things such as oil change, check the tires, transmission, and all other things that are included
with a full service oil change. My last oil change was August 2004. Towards the end of August I was on my was to church with a group of women and the car began jerking and acting as though it was going to shut off. We pulled over and waited about fifteen minutes and started it up and once again it began jerking. Well, we jerked all the way to the church and then home again. It only got worse after that night. The car began making noise, smoking as though something was burning under the hood. I went to NAPA Automotive to have it put on the machine. They said it was some kind of sensor but he could not determine where this sensor part was located. I decided to take it to the Chrysler Dealer since it is a chrysler. I informed him of the prior diagnosis. He came up with the same diagnosis accept he was also able to tell me that not only the sensor but other things were damaged and he would have to go into the engine to find out exactly what it was. That cost me $475.00. Well he took the engiene apart and called me back to inform me that the engine was shot and it would cost me $6000 to get a new engine and put it in. I dont have that kind of money. I
still owe on that car. Why would I need a new engine for a new car if the engine was not already faulty. When I contacted the Chyrsler Corp. they gave me the brush off. This has caused me a large inconvieniance in my life. I dont know who is going to fix it but, somebody has to fix my car. I am going to fight this to the bitter end and I will not go away.
Sincerely,
Debra W.

My Lovely Family Car Which Was The Absolute Best Car I Ever Owned, Turned Into My Absolute Wosrt Nightmare!!!
While Coming Down I-19 On Friday 9-24-04 I was ready to call it a day. That was until I turned off my cruise control, and the engine gurgled. Not a good feeling when you are in afternoon traffic going 65mph, and suddenly you're at 40mph.Thank God I was not with my wife and children. My heart dropped when the truck behind me swerved to avoid hitting me. I was lucky my Grandmother lived two blocks from where the car DIED. Monday 9-27-04 the car was towed to the local dealer. Tuesday 9-28-04 the dealer called and said "I needed to athuorize further investigation into the motor." I asked what was wrong? He said that if there was sludge in the oil pump then the engine would need to be replaced and it was not covered by my "Extended Warranty" and would COST $7,000.00 to do. What good is a warranty on something you purchase if it doesn't help??? I'm Glad I didn't go buy the Stratus I wanted. It had the same motor. Never Again!!

My name is Jon B. and I am informing you that my 2.7l engine in my 1999 Dodge Intrepid has thrown a rod, due to the lack of oil circulation brought on by sludge/thickening oil residue. My Intrepid's odometer currently reads 54,000 miles, I bought the Intrepid used with 26,000 miles on it. I e-mailed Chrysler informing them of my complete dis-satisfaction of the car, asking them what I should do now that I have an almost new car with 54,000 miles that does not drive and that I still owe close to $6,000.00 on. I have yet to hear back from them on what I should do. Just wondering if you have any suggestions on what I can or should do next, or if you have any information or details that will help me in my quest to drive again. In the meantime I commute to work with borrowed cars and public transportation. It is not acceptable. Let me know if you can help. Thank You so much for your time.

CAR FAILURE # 057 September 29, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Never had a problem with my car until it started making a noise Nov 19, 2003. 77,486 miles. The car never overheated, there were no indications. Drove it Dec 8 and on the way home the RPM's raced up to 4000 bouncing back down to 2000 RPM, then back and forth and then finally dropping to 0 and the engine quit running. This was all while I was going 60 miles an hour. I was lucky enough to be by an exit ramp going up hill, get off the ramp with cars behind me and luckily no other cars coming down this particular ramp trying to get on the highway. I found a rural Auto repair that was cheaper on labor, but it still cost me $3,000. The whole engine was overhauled, after 3000 miles the oil was changed to synthetic and seemed to be running ok. On Sunday September 26, 2004 my engine light came on and found out Monday that the code P0432 means "Main catalyst below threshold (Bank 2)" - the dealer says this is an efficiency code and more than likely the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. I find out there is more than one, so just replacing one will cost $500 to $600 with labor. This part in under factory warranty 8 years or 80,000 miles - of course my car is at 89,000. What else can go wrong with this car. I bought it used from Enterprise in 2001. My Bonneville lasted ten years before it started having major problems. My complaint was filed with http://www.BigClassAction.com as well as the U.S. National Highway Traffic and Safety Institute 800-424-9393.

I have a 1999 Concord, I bought it used and was told this car did not come with extended warranty. One month after the purchase the air conditioner stopped working & the car over heated. Seven months later white smoke started coming out the tail pipe. Every time took the car to get serviced nobody saw anything wrong with it. There were problems with the driver side window. The plastic piece that goes around the bottom part of the windshield flew off. (I drive a total of 2 hours per day on the freeway, sometimes with my 3 children.) After dropping off my two school age children I was on my way to work going towards the freeway when I heard a thump, it felt like I had went over a speed bump. The car lost some power so I pulled over when I tried to go back home I heard a knocking noise. After taking it to the shop I was told that it would cost $6,000.00. So it just sits!!!!!!! I just thank GOD I was not on the freeway with my kids!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for letting me vent:-)

In August 2003 my 1998 Dodge Intrepid (2.7L) suddenly died on my. I financed this used vehicle in January 2001. It will cost me $6000-$7000 to get this car running. The cost includes a re-built engine. Upon inspection, I disvocered sludge build-up although I regularly change my oil every 2000-3000 miles. I am very disappointed to say the least. The dealership insists that it is my fault and would not even honor the warranty that I had which covers the
engine. Is there no justice? If so, please help me.

CAR FAILURE # 054 September 28, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a '99 Concorde that has just over 60,000 miles. The engine recently failed while driving down the road. We had been hearing a "ticking" noise in the engine previously and had taken it to the local Chrysler dealership since it was covered by an extended warranty. The dealership did $1,800.00 worth of work on the engine. After the work was completed, the engine still had the same "ticking" sound, which the dealership said they didn't know what was causing it. They had recommended that a new engine be put in but the extended warranty wouldn't allow it. That was at about 59,700 miles and now, less than 1000 miles later, the engine is gone. The dealership says that the engine has 40% less compression than it is supposed to have and is still recommending that a new engine be put in. I told them that it sounded like a timing chain problem to me and they agreed but said that they were going to see if the extended warranty would allow them to just put another engine in it. The service advisor even said that the mechanic considered purposefully making the engine blow so they could install a new one.

Naturally, there is more detail to the story but you get the point. The dealership must know of the problem because they have recommended a new engine from the start. That's exactly what most of the other people who have had this same problem have been told. My concern is that the extended warranty won't cover the repairs because the cause (timing chain) should have been discovered when the engine was torn down the first time. It that happens, they say it will fall on the Chrysler dealership to eat the cost of the repairs. I can only hope that doesn't mean that the dealership will try to stick me with the $1,800 cost of a used engine.

It that happens I guess we'll end up in court.

I have a 99 Dodge Intrepid that stopped running while driving. My mother was driving the car when it just stopped running in the middle of the road. She had the car towed to a garage who had it two weeks and finally said that the car needed a computer chip but she would have to take the car to the dealership to have it restarted. She had the car towed to the dealership and they said that her timing chain failed and caused damaged to the header and valves, thus the car needs a new engine. The cost for repairs is $6500 plus. My father is on disability and my mother is a cashier at Target. They have no savings and cannot afford this bill. What can we do. We are calling all the numbers we find on the internet. Is there a class action lawsuit and how do we get involved? Please help us if you can.

CAR FAILURE # 052 September 27, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 1999 intrepid with 80,000 miles. I have already replaced the timing chain at a cost of $2,200 miles and now I have an engine knock. Mechanic says that the bearings are going and I need to replace the engine. I called my Dodge Dealer, Dodge City in Burlington New Jersey and of course they said it was my fault for not changing the oil. I told them I did change the oil and that it was a faulty engine design that was the problem. I did not have the car serviced there because it was to far away from my house, and because of that, they said that they could not do anything for me.
I asked if I brought my service records with me to prove that I service the car correctly would they then take ownership of the problem and they said that they would not. They basically said that unless it was serviced by them they could not guarantee that the work was done correctly by my mechanic even though I have all my work done at the local Bridgestone/Firestone dealership. I would think that they would be considered reputable. I stilled owed nearly $2,000 on the car and had to pay it off while looking for another car. It is still sitting in my driveway because I can't bring myself to give it away when it looks so good.

CAR FAILURE # 051 September 27, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Hi there!  We were very proud when we bought our used 1999 Dodge Intrepid. We thought, we finally had a decent car. Boy were we wrong. We drove it for 2 years and still owe about $5000 on this junk.  I had engine failure while driving on a highway. The stirring wheel and also the breaks failed completely. I almost hit another car and another car almost hit me.
What is wrong with those people? How many people have to die, before they do something?  I always thought, because it is a German company, I could depend on this car. Wrong again.
This was my first and last Dodge, or anything that has to do with Chrysler. I still have to make car payments, but who cares, right?
I will fight, till this matter is taken care off.

Oh wow I am not alone!!! I purchased the Intrepid in June of 2002 from a used dealership in Virginia Beach with a supposed warranty. Three weeks later my 4 yr old son and I were driving on Interstate 95 in N.C. and the car blew up on fire (the engine). I pulled over, got my child out and ran. When the firefighters got there they said "oh you have a dodge intrepid no wonder. ' Happens all the time. I contacted the used dealership and they cursed me out. I am a single mom who works very hard, I paid cash for the car, and even though it has been 2 yrs I am still upset. Please contact me if there are any class action lawsuits!!!!

I have been a victim of the Chrysler defective engine scam. On May 28, 2004 my 2001 Chrysler Concorde died with no warning, while I was driving home from work on a heavily traveled road. The Dealer (Reedman’s Auto World in Langhorne charged us $428 to tear the engine apart and diagnose the problem. A problem that they were well aware of because of service bulletins they received from Chrysler, but the general public had not. They estimated the cost to replace the engine at $7,600. I contacted a friend who owns an independent service station, and he charged us $6,200. When the service station manager tore the engine apart he discovered an engine that looked like it had been driven for 140,000 miles. Our car was 2 ½ years old and had 37,000 miles on it. Our warranty was 36,000 and therefore none of the cost was covered. I discovered in my research that not only was the 2.7L engine design defective, but also the rack and pinion design was flawed.
I was shocked and amazed at Chrysler’s and Reedman’s total lack of concern for their customer’s safety. We also had to rent a car at a cost of $800 for the three weeks that our car was being fixed. We had to refinance our mortgage to pay for the cost of replacing the engine. But, what has me the most upset and often sick to my stomach, is the fact that the $7,000 it cost to fix this death trap of a car is in the pockets of a greedy, uncaring and dishonest corporation like Chrysler, instead of being used to help pay for my daughter’s college education.
I am definitely interested in pursuing this complaint.

CAR FAILURE # 047 September 27, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

My wife bought a used 1999 Dodge Intrepid with only 57K miles on it. Soon after we bought it we noticed a knocking from the engine. We talked to several mechanics and they all told us it was a "Dodge feature" and that all Dodges made a knocking sound and it was nothing for us to worry about. Well at around 90k miles, one day the engine made a HUGE knocking sound, we immediately took to our personal mechanic. When he torn the engine apart, he found out that the so called "routine small sound" that we were hearing at first was the timing chain loosening up and the HUGE sound that we heard occured when the timing chain got so loose that it jumped the sprocket at the piston was knocking.
Well come to find out that there was considerably a lot of oil "sludge" build up and he had to rebuild the engine for us. He replaced all 24 valves, 2 pistons, 2 rods, cam shaft, etc, basically the whole engine.....we are still waiting on the totally collateral damage report and hopefully we will be able to rebuild it for under $3000, which is basically what we still owe on the car.
We thought we were getting a deal on the car, I just wished I would have read or found out all this info about the Dodge engines before we bought the car.  I don't know if, when we get the car back, we will keep it until it is paid for or what we will do at this point.

CAR FAILURE # 046 September 25, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My intrepid engine went out while I was dropping my daughter off to school one day. The car stopped on the expressway I pulled over to the side of the road and started the car again. Then I got off of the expressway and the car stop again, I call my friend and he came and got me and my daughter and we call for a tow truck and we took the car right over to the shop and they did a diagnostic test and said that the engine was bad, then we took it somewhere else and got a second test and we got the same result. I call Chrysler to let them know what happen and they said it was nothing that they could do about it. I told the man that the car only had 55,000 miles on it and I was just driving and no warning or anything like the lights for the engine to warn me that there was some kind of problem. he told me if I got the car fixed and if there was ever a recall then I would then get reimbursed for what I spent on the car. I also call several times inquiring about my car and each time I was told that it was nothing that they could do about it . My warranty was up and I checked around and everywhere I check was $5,000 to $9,000 dollars for my intrepid.

CAR FAILURE # 045 September 25, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My engine blew on my 2000 Dodge Intrepid at 85,000 miles. I had only owned the car 1 year. No warning signs at all. I just got in my car one day got about a mile down the road and it made a horrible sound and quit. I had to have a stranger give me a ride home. My extended warranty would not cover the engine because they said I needed to show proof of where I had the oil changed every 3000 miles. My uncle changed my oil sometimes. I had to borrow the money from my grandmother $6000.00 to replace my engine. This is the only car we have. My husband started having heart problems shortly after and had to get on disability. Needless to say our income decreased dramatically. Now I can not afford to pay my grandmother back so she is taking me to court. Not much of a grandmother I know, but she wants her money back. So thanks Daimler Chrysler for all you have done. I can just hope you realize soon that you need to step up to the plate and fix your mistakes.

CAR FAILURE # 044 September 24, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My engine failed at 68,214 miles due a spun rod bearing. The oil was changed regularly and all other maintenance performed routinely. Chrysler customer service said "We won’t hang up on you but we are not willing to help. The car is out of warranty and therefore we have no legal obligation".  After taking the car to a dealer as suggested, at my expense I might add, the dealer told me that the parts would cist in excess of $4600 including a short block and then labor on top of that. I asked that he go through his channels to see if there is anything DC would do in this case. They examined the vehicle closer and my history. DC’s official response was that since I never complained about engine problems they wouldn’t help. Why would I have complained? I maintained the engine properly and never had any warning such a dummy light or running poorly. It just failed one day while driving about 70mph on the highway, about 150 miles from home. The car sat for 3 months before I replaced the engine myself with a used motor for $1000 and 3 days work.

CAR FAILURE # 043 September 23, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. On my home one night from a friend house, traveling on I57 (Illinois), I noticed a flicker of my oil light. I had also heard a thump, but was unaware of what was exactly happening. Once I was home (about 25 total miles) , I had noticed a knocking, but thought it to be somewhat normal. However I asked my nephew, who is attending ITI for automotive mechanics, to take a quick look, so I knew what I was in for when I took it into the shop for repair. After taking my car in to my local Dodge dealer, I was forced to take the day off work while the car was being looked at. A call from service later that day told me that the engine was no longer good and that they were pulling metal pieces out of my oil pan. After asking them what the repair cost was going to be, I was informed that it was going to be in upwards of 7000+ dollars.  Now, the thing that - most upset me - is that I didn't find out about any of this until the night I HAD to buy another car in order to get me to my job from a report on this failure on the local news. already it was too late. I have to get to work. Just cant let this stop me from earning a living, but holy geez , why didn't anybody send out anything sooner. Now I have a car in my driveway that is not quite paid for and cannot be run ... what do you think I should do ??

My father has a 2001 Chrysler concord with just 41,000 miles. The engine blew on this vehicle on December 29, 2003! He has been at battle with the dealership, claims with Autocap with no resolution. He is being forced by the bank to continue payments and insurance on the lease. Please contact him, the stress of this situation is effecting his health.

CAR FAILURE # 041 September 23, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I'm currently searching for a rebuilt engine for my 98 Intrepid. I stumbled across your website and wanted to throw my 2 cents in. I was taveling at 60 mph on cruise control and my timing chain jumped and ripped my engine apart. I have owned the car for less than a month and now will be paying twice what I originally thought I was. I wish I had done more research on the car before I bought it, but it was through a relative and was what I thought to be a good deal at the time. Please let me know if there are any avenues I can follow to complain or possibly bring about a recall of this huge pile of junk. Thanks for your help, and if you know of any reputable engine rebuilders who service the Saint Louis area and don't charge an arm and a leg, I would truly appreciate the help!!

CAR FAILURE # 040 September 23, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Our 99 Chrysler intrepid 2.7 ate a rod bearing and failed with 74,000 km (approx 45-48,000 mi.) On the -I-5 Freeway in Sacramento while we were on vacation. We had to rent a car to return home to Canada and go down later to trailer it back home. Since we bought the car used from a Chrysler dealer (an ex-lease car) , and I did not opt for a warrantee, I am stuck. I am almost finished rebuilding the engine. We took the car to the dealer just 2 weeks prior to our trip with some A/C problems (intermittently blowing hot air) and they had some difficulty locating the cause.. I also noticed that at some time either during manufacture or the time it was leased, the front left side of the block itself (timing chain case) had a huge chunk broken out, welded back in and epoxied on the inside to prevent leakage.

I own a 2001 Dodge Intrepid with the dreaded 2.7 liter engine. I know you've heard this story dozens of times but here's mine. While my husband was driving home, the engine light came on and immediately the engine died---forever. The mechanic (who's already seen nearly two dozen of these) told us it would take
around $6,000 to replace the engine so there it sits (fully insured since I still owe a fortune on it), on the mechanic's lot for the last 5 and a half months with only 65,000 miles on it. We have 5 kids and one car now. Sometimes we have to rent a car when we absolutely HAVE to be in two places at once. This is
costing us a fortune. Please---MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD! We can't give up until they fork over the dough.

CAR FAILURE # 038 September 21, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. In the middle of August of this year it started making a strange lawnmower like sound in the engine. We took it to the dealer and they "attempted" to fix the problem. They said the timing was off and there was sludge in the engine. It costs us $675, which included the tow back to our apartment. They said it would cost us about $3,000 for a used engine and $6,000 for a new one. This car had been serviced regularly and had no indications of problems before this time. Our engine or oil light never came on. We owe almost $9,000 on this car. We just got it home from the shop (not the dealer because we no longer trust this corporation) on September 17. $675 (dealership), $1,700 (used engine off ebay), $1,400 (to put the engine in) and $600 (for new belts and whatever else that comes with putting in a used engine to give it a good start). Approximately $4,375 later, we are not sure how long this engine will last. The shop recommends oil changes every 500 miles. Our savings is tapped and credit cards maxed. Feel free to contact us with any questions.

CAR FAILURE # 037 September 18, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Driving on the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago. 1999 dodge intrepid starting making alot of noise and died. I could no longer drive it and it had to be towed to repair shop who determined that the timing chains went which ruined the engine. I maintained the vehicle with regular oil changes and maintenance checks. I have not repaired the car as the amount of money required is excessive for our budget at this time.
Thank you,

CAR FAILURE # 036 September 18, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
To the President of Chrysler:
I will never buy another Chrysler/Dodge product ever again and I have inform friends about the 2.7 engine problem I had w/my Intrepid which the engine finally was blown. The Dodge Co where I brought the car has refused to pay for the blown out engine and I had to borrow on my 401K pension to get a upgraded engine put back in my Intrepid. I had a rental car for 2 months at my out of pocket expense. I have submitted my complaint w/the proper authorities to see if I can recouped $7,800 back for the new engine, rental car expenses and labor.
Sincerely,
B. Hilton

On Sept. 11th, 2004 my 2.7 blew. It was caused by sludge. I have records of most of my oil changes if not all. If the car manufacturer is not responsible then the chain outfit that changed my oil should because I was paying for high grade synthetic oil.

CAR FAILURE # 034 September 16, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I purchased my 1999 Dodge Intrepid new in late 1998. It was my very first new car but my 5th Dodge so I thought, based on past vehicles, that I was making a good long term purchase. At 57,263 miles in 2002 my engine seized and I had the car towed to the dealership. I was told that the problem was due to lack of maintenance (oil sludge) and the extended warranty company would not cover it. I had it towed to a private mechanic because his estimate at $4902.75 was roughly $1000-1500 less than the dealership. Unfortunately the repair took several months due to high demand for the 2.7L engine. Because of this I had to buy another car to drive until the Intrepid was repaired as I used my car for work daily. Two car payments, insurance x 2 and a $5000.00 repair. I wasn't aware, at the time, that it was a design problem or I wouldn't have had it fixed. Now I'm afraid to drive the car far from home or work and the resale is horrible because of the engine debacle. After having the engine repaired I thought I would be maintenance free for a while but I was sadly mistaken. Just this year (2004) it has been in the shop 4 times, two of which were behind a tow truck. My Intrepid purchase was the single worst financial decision I have ever made and is only second only to my home in the cumulative amount I've spent on any one item.

I purchased a 2000 Chrysler Concorde in August of 2003 (used) and 3 months later November 22, 2003 the engine went out due to oil sludge build up. When I purchased the vehicle it only had 35,000 miles in it. I couldn't get any type of help from Chrysler corp. just a nasty attitude man. If I had all the man power I would let the world know not to buy any Chrysler's or Dodge of any kind new or used. They are nice looking cars only.

CAR FAILURE # 032 September 16, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2000 2.7 liter Dodge Intrepid. In August of 2004, while my daughter and friends were on an errand the engine seized and failed leaving her stranded. After the car was towed to the local Dodge dealer we were informed that the engine was severely damaged by a failed timing belt and to replace the engine it would cost $ 7500... more than the car is worth. We then had the car towed to a local mechanic and he confirmed the findings
of the Dodge dealership and told us that he could get us a used engine for $3500-4500 or a new engine for $6000. He also informed us that this model and year was know for major engine problems and he had three Dodge
Intrepids in his shop in which he was replacing failed engines. From my research this is a common problem with the Intrepid and Dodge is well aware of it. Is that true? And if so, is there anything we can do? Is there a class action lawsuit we can join?

CAR FAILURE # 031 September 16, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 1998 Dodge Intrepid. I am young so most people try to say that we drive cars harder. I find this to not be a fact, even if a large portion of young adults do. The first signs occured when I noticed that the oil was starting to burn very quickly and it would even be refilled all togeather before even 1,500 miles. The engine began to surge and even one point smoke (electrical) came from underneath the dash below. I took the car to a GoodYear Gemini car repair shop and of course they all tell me the horror stories and even suggest to trade it in while its still running. I left the shop that day happy that it was running, until about a month later it started doing the same thing. I would be driving down the road and it would shake surge and even die at times when i came to a complete stop. So one day I am on the way back from about a hour drive to pick up supplies I just came off the highway no irregular driving, as I am driving I noticed a very very loud knocking sound and it increased. I decided to pull off the road to investigate, little did I know that when I did it would be the last time I would drive it. The engine had oil, but I noticed the engine had coolant leaking from some manifold on the engine suggesting to me extemely hot temperatures. When I attempted to start the car it wouldnt do anything. It was towed back (AAA) and now is a nice lawn ornament. I have got it to start just a loud knocking sound we are talking VERY LOUD! So I call around to get prices on a rebuilt engine and my AVG. Quotes: $3500 NO LABOR, and from what I know its usually 6-9 hours. Not just that but they all said they are in high-demand, what a great thing to here. This is the 2nd engine in this car that has blown, its a normal OEM DOHC 2.7L 6CYL I should say abnormal. I SUGGEST NEVER TO BUY A DODGE INTCRAPID! AND I WANT THEM TO PAY FOR THIS!

CAR FAILURE # 030 September 15, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We bought our 2000 Dodge Intrepid (2.7L) with 18,700 miles in August, 2000. On Sept. 9, 2004 my wife called and said the car had died (now with 54,000 miles). The tow truck company guy said he thought it was the timing chain. He'd fixed an identical Intrepid with that problem a while back. Today the Dodge dealer confirmed that diagnosis; broken chain, bent intake valves, etc. There was no sludge, the engine was clean. He couldn't say why the timing chain came off its track (or something like that). The bill will be $2950 including sales tax. Feb. of this year the oil light had come on, but the crankcase was full, so I took it to the dealer. They replaced a faulty oil sending unit sensor, but I don't know if that’s related to this.

Hi, I was looking up a possible recall for my 1999 Dodge Intrepid, and saw your website. Just yesterday my car stop running as I was pulling out of a parking space, and again about an hour later, at a stop sign. I didn’t know why, and checked the fluids, and all was fine. Now I’m very concerned (just purchased the car 1 week ago).  Please keep me informed. Thanks!

I was probably one of the loudest Chrysler Corp cheerleaders around (66 Satellite, 190,000 miles, sold running well, 69 Barracuda, raced every weekend 3 years, 1 blown transmission [my fault], 71 Dodge Dart slant six engine 240,000 miles. I now have a 99 Dodge Intrepid. I had to rebuild the engine at 108,000 miles. I did the work myself and was unaware of the problems with the 2.7 until I started buying parts. Everywhere I went I started hearing horror stories from parts salespeople about this miserable excuse for an engine. Many parts are not available from aftermarketers, they have to be purchased from Chrysler.Rods $150.00 each!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As for sludge, upon teardown my engine was as clean as a pin. I do change my oil and filter regularly at 3,000 miles, but didn’t use synthetic. I have since replaced the engine on a friend’s 01 Intrepid. 78,000 miles and sludge so thick I had to dig with a screwdriver to find the headbolts.Needless to say, although I have no choice in my provided company car, I do not intend to ever purchase another Chrysler product, and will be just as loud a detractor as I was a cheerleader. Present count 11 people persuaded not to purchase Chrysler.

We have just had our 2000 Intrepid crater on us. It's timing chain broke and took out the engine. We still owe $10,000 on it and it will cost $5000 to fix it. Got any advice? Other than perhaps suicide :-)) Let us know if you have any idea whom we could contact.

CAR FAILURE # 026 September 13, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My 2000 Intrepid engine light came on while driving several months ago. I Purchased the car from a Lexus dealer used 8months ago. Also, purchased extended warranty which cost $ 1,300.00 (financed into total of the car.  Lexus dealer checked car out and stated I needed a new motor. Lexus had an independent company replace engine (and gave 1 yr warrant), however, they used my extended warranty as payment, which exhausted the use of my warranty.  Dealer never informed me that there was a recall or any problems with Intrepid engines. I just found out when a family member saw recall information in the local newspaper. I feel the mfg should have paid for the replacement engine instead of using my extended warranty.  ast month I had a problem with the ignition (over $500.00) and since my warranty had been used on the engine, I had to pay for the ignition repair.  This is terrible. My car had around 80,000 miles on it when the engine trouble started. Where can I sign up for the class action suit.

The 2.7 engine in my 2001 Intrepid failed due to the little metal cap inbeded in plastic at the front of the engine blew off. It is where the ooling system is bleed. The Fact that sludge may have caused over heating and pressure to build up. My daughter was driving, she said the car gave no sign of trouble till the engine quit.

CAR FAILURE # 024 September 13, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
While driving to work this morning (at the end of my commute to work) I lost complete engine control three times.  The RPMs each time went down to zero, pumping the gas pedal repeatedly seemed to bring them up each time.  Until finally the engine shutdown (the power steering was lost at this point).  The car ended dead on the off-ramp near work.  My car is a 1998 Chrysler Concord with a 2.7 L engine.  My dealer (Joe Jacobby's out of Warrenton, VA) told me: "it is the best engine Chrysler makes", before I bought it!  What a laugh!

Hi folks, Emailing you as per your website. I have/had a 99 dodge intrepid with a 2.7 engine. Luckily I was doing about 15 mph when the engine failed so I had no problem stopping. I have had several quotes from repair facilities and all of them said how terrible the engine is. I'm going to junk the car in the next few weeks as I've purchased a new car (nissan) After owning 3 chrysler products I'll never buy another.

CAR FAILURE # 022 September 13, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2000 Intrepid. Since around 35000 miles it occasionally got a ticking noise in the upper engine that sounded like a stuck lifter. Of course it would always go away before we could get it to the dealer. The car now has 66,000. It recently got significantly louder and the car actually started to miss but of course it all went away before we could get it to the dealer. I had the dealer keep the car and start it intermittently over a couple of days until it finally acted up for them. The result was the timing chain gears and guides  were coming apart just as I see has happened to others. Fortunately my extended warranty covered the $6,000 bill all but for $175 and I have a new engine. I have to wonder if the new engine has the same defect and how many miles am I going to get out of it. The extended warranty will be gone before too much longer.

Thank you for your recent update regarding the 2.7 liter engine nightmare.  I think something needs to be done about this.  This is serious and I hope everyone involved keeps pushing the issue.  My Intrepid burned out at 34,000 miles because of this engine problem and everyone that has had this crisis needs to get their voice heard and do whatever it takes to get their money back.  Keep me posted on all the updates and I will do whatever I can to be heard.

My 1999 Dodge Intrepid quit while driving - the dealer said that it was an engine oil sludge problem known in these vehicles - it broke down about 2 years ago with 65,000 miles on it - its still sitting in my garage as I am paying it off! I always used synthetic oil! This car is a total lemon - I called Chrysler and they told me it was built in October 1998 and it is out of the 3 year 30,000 mile warranty - therefore basically it is my problem!!! That was their answer to everything I asked ...out of warranty,...no recall!

CAR FAILURE # 019 September 09, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
On Sunday, July 25, my 2000 Dodge Intrepid timing chain broke without any advance warning.    The car only had 70,000 miles on it and since I am currently unemployed, we cannot obtain a loan to either repair the vehicle or buy a new vehicle.  We have had so many problems with this car since we purchased it.  The air conditioner/heater has been giving off a musty odor since we purchased the car.  We have taken to the dealer three times.  All they do is put deodorizer in the space where they say water pools and mold develops.  We have also had transmission problems with this vehicle.  The door actuators are bad and make a horrible noise.  The back doors cannot be opened from the outside.    I put new front brakes on the car the week before the timing chain broke and blew the engine.  Chrysler is unwilling to assist as the vehicle is out of warranty.  I have heard, however, that even the cars that still have warranties are being turned away from Chrysler.  My car is currently sitting in a repair shop lot until we can decide what to do with it.  We don't have $7,000 to repair it but don't want to junk it.  I am very upset and will not purchase another Chrysler product.  If a class action suit is indeed started, I would like to be included.

Well I'm Hot wile driving in this car since the begining of the Summer. I'm speaking of my 2001 Doge Intrepid R/T with all the factory extras. A $30,000 car with no A/C. Seems like it all started as soon as the 3 year warranty expierd. The car is black and it's August in Carolina. I had it charged and it lasted about a week. The machaninc who did the work for me felt so bad that he gave me a second charge for free. He explained that the part that is leaking needed to be raplaced is located inside the dash board. He warned that it should only be serviced by the dealer as it was a complicated job requiering removal of the dash. More money for Doge on a car that I still am making payments on. I have pamperd this car from day one as I'm the only owner, nothing but the best for her the finest of synthetic oils and kept up with all the sugested preventative mantanence only to be left hot in the sun wearing black and looking at $1000 or more wich makes me even hotter.

CAR FAILURE # 017 September 09, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My wife and I own a 1999 Chrysler Concord and the engine seized up Friday night 3 September 2004.  No warning, nothing.  We bought the car new and have experienced a host of problems.  The first year of owning the vehicle the transmission had to be rebuilt.  Shortly after that, the air conditioner had to be repaired.  Not long after that, the front passenger power seat, rear door power window, power door lock and the radiator cooling fan motor quit.  We never in a million years thought the engine would seize with only 90k miles.  The car was being serviced on a regular basis, so that eliminates neglect.  We are now looking for a used engine to repair the vehicle.  My wife is writing the Chrysler manufacturers of our experience and if we don't receive a positive response, we will never buy another Chrysler product again.  We will also let as many people as we possibly can know about our experience.

CAR FAILURE # 016 September 09, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Same as everyone else, blown engine due to sludge.  Heard slight knocking sound driving into work and car would not start at lunch time.  Service center around corner did a diagnostics test and guessed a blown timing chain.  Car was taken to local Dodge dealership and problem was confirmed.  The service manager said that the sludge build-up was very noticeable in the engine and that timing chain, tensiors, valves, heads, etc. would need to be replaced.  Total service cost is around $2700, with over $1000 worth of rental car fees over the last six weeks saving up to pay for repair.  So much for my mortgage this month!

I did all of my own oil changes and kept up every 3-4K miles, including oil filters each time, air fileters every other time and new spark plugs every third time.  Service manager said that I will get a 12 month - 12K miles warranty on work, however I don't think I want to keep the car that long.  I have been very disappointed at the lack of care or interest DCX has shown regarding this issue.  They have told me via phone and e-mail that my car is no longer under warranty and "they are sorry" for my trouble, but can't do anything.  I have driven an Eagle Vision, Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Neon, and now Intrepid for the last four cars, and can honestly say that I have lost complete faith in DCX and will NEVER purchase another vehicle of them again.

CAR FAILURE # 015 September 08, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought a 2000 Intrepid in March 2001 with approx. 32000 miles on it. I loved that car and was thrilled to have a newer car. Labor Day weekend 2002 with just 44,682 miles the engine started to knock very loudly. I had no warning or any other indication that the engine was about to blow. Took it to my mechanic who informed me that the engine would have to be rebuilt. I had a brother-in-law who worked for a Chrysler dealership and said they would get it repaired for $100 under warranty. That was a joke. Once they started working on the car they told me that the engine was sludged and would cost more than the $100. I had already paid $230 to tow the car out of town to this dealership for the repair since they were going to help. Any way, about a month and $1600 later I got my car back. The car never ran right after that. I was informed later that the engine repair was the worst work my mechanic and seen done on an engine and that he would be embarrased to have given someone back a vechicle in that condition. Then in April of 2004 with 53870 miles, the timing chain broke. My mechanic said it looked like a bomb had gone off in my engine.  Looking at having to rebuild or replace the engine. A new engine will cost approx. $4000 to $6000 and thats just the engine, $2500 to $3000 to rebuild the pice of junk. Who has that kind of money??? I have averaged a little more than 10,000 miles per engine and cant afford to keep this car anymore. As most of you already know, chrysler will do Nothing to help with these issues. Shouldnt an engine last longer than 10,000 miles between rebuilds or replacements??? Good luck to anyone who can get help from chrysler!!! I have shared my story with anyone who will listen and have even convinced a couple of people to get rid of their intrepid before its too late! I will continue to share my story with everyone i know ! And i will never own another chrysler product as long as I Live!!!
