CAR FAILURE # 399 January 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I spent $9,500 and they are asking me to bring the car to their dealer to be diagnosed. I've already submitted the paperwork with the diagnosis from a DODGE dealer and oil change receipts. They did not commit to paying anything and this could be very dangerous! Once the car is in their shop how can you prove that they it was them that changed something in the car to avoid paying for all the damage. People have to be careful not release their cars that easily. I've asked them to send me their proposal that they want my car with no guarantees that they will do anything for me and that third party said they don't know if Chrysler would want to do that. GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING FOR YOUR RECORDS!!!!! I don't trust this group that as you mentioned is working for them.

CAR FAILURE # 398 January 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Bought our 1999 Intrepid July 2003 and have loved it dearly...few minor problems here and there until the day after Thanksgiving 2004 when driving back from shopping in the evening (was almost hit 3 times when stalled on busy FM road) and the engine totally seized. Tried for 3 days to determine the problem then towed it to our local certified mechanic shop. Was given an estimate of approximately $4,000. to $6,000. to replace engine as it wouldn't be feasible to rebuild it. We started calling locally for new engine replacement and got much of the same estimates and many disturbing stories from different mechanics. One using the term "patterned failure" to explain why the engine was so expensive to replace. Then started researching the internet to be REALLY disturbed by all the other unfortuate owners who also took very good care of their vehicle only to find it is practically worthless with what has already been ruined by seemingly poor design/engineering (or will more than likely soon be worthless) 2.7 engine. I have called a Chrsyler Investigator whose phone number I'de gotten online and was told he couldn't help and to first call our local dealership. I have called our local Dodge/Chrysler dealership but have not received a return call as of yet. In these very hard economic times, it is criminal for hard working, honest people to be so badly taken from companies that make millions of dollars of profit and not stand behind their product that could almost be considered "deceptive" in their business conduct as they seem to avoid accountability for an obviously defective engine.

CAR FAILURE # 397 January 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with 72K miles and I heard from many people that as soon as I hit 70K miles I will have problems with my engine. Sure enough my engine started making an unusual knocking sound so I took it to the mechanic and my engine needed a complete rehaul. The cost was $2,200 for the work performed! I will never purchase a Dodge again!! Please let me know if Dodge is going to have a recall on this engine type.
Thanks

CAR FAILURE # 396 January 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

As many, my 99 Intrepid completely died November 26, 2004 with 73,200 miles on the odometer and has no hope for revival any time soon. We have always maintained our vehicles better than manufacturers specs but had no warning of such disaster coming. The car ran fine up until it absoluely just quit and resulting in almost being hit 3 different times where it died and caused traffic back-up until towed away. I have owned many vehicles and never has this happened. As one mechanic I spoke with said, this engine has "patterned failure" and is the reason for the extravagant engine replacement cost. Please keep us informed of any class action suits forming. We reside in the Austin, TX area and would greatly appreciate any help in replacement or repairing a presently worthless investment. We work hard for a living and cannot afford to throw away thousands of hard earned dollars when the parties responsible have already reeped their profits but will not be accountable for their products.

CAR FAILURE # 395 January 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I had sludge build up in the engine, which eventually led up to engine failure. I religiously had the oil changed and even had a master mechanic do a diagnostic check on the engine. Is anyone taking action against these crooks and if so I would like to join in the battle. I have been without my car since September 2004 and I am still making payment. I am having my car repaired for an outrageous amount of money and will be able to drive it again in a couple more week.
Have A Wonderful Day!

CAR FAILURE # 394 January 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

I have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid with 70K miles with engine failure. I have had it towed to two different auto shops and was told it would cost about 5k to replace and that this was common for this engine to fail. I owe lots on this car. I contacted Daimler/Chrysler and was told manufacture warranty had expired and would not receive no financial help. I now have a $400. A month lawn ornament. And looking at repossession. I have recently filed for disability and was counting on this car to last.
Thank you,

CAR FAILURE # 393 January 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

I have a 2000 Chrysler Concorde W/2.7L motor that has failed at 86,000 miles. I have kept the oil changed and all regular maintenance performed. I still owe $7,000 on this car and it is just a heart breaker to see this car sitting in my garage while I am still making loan and insurance payments on it. I initially blamed my wife for the failure. After further review, I have seen where numerous others are experiencing the same problems. The descriptions of other failures match my incident word for word. I am willing to do whatever it takes to hold someone accountable for this poorly designed motor. Every other car I have ever owned has exceeded the normal life of a motor, so I am confident in my ability to properly maintain a vehicle. Apparently with this motor it does not matter how well you take care of it. Any help or advise you can offer will be greatly appreciated. I can be contacted at the email address below.
Sincerely,
Reuben W.

CAR FAILURE # 392 January 19, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My 99 dodge intrepid stopped running yesterday and they tell me I need a new engine on 64,000 miles. I am a single mother of one and still making a healthy car payment. I would expect any engine to last longer then that. 2700.-4000.00 I don't have for a new engine. What should I do now?

CAR FAILURE # 391 January 19, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought my 2000 Intrepid in 2002. It had 74,000 miles on it when I bought it. A couple of days after I got it, I had to replace the speed sensors. It lasted for 2 years. The day it died, I took it to get an oil change. Later that day, the engine blew while I was in the middle of an intersection, lucky I got to the other side where my car finally died. I had to get my mechanic to come and pick it up. He suggested that I not try to fix it because of the major problem with this type of engine. I even called a salvage and they told me I would only get $300 for it because they have gotten alot of calls on that kind of car because of the engine problem. So, now I am out of a car. I paid $8,800 for the car and only got problems and $300 out of it. I will never buy a Dodge again.

CAR FAILURE # 390 January 19, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I am just sick! I bought my 2001 dodge intrepid in 2002. I had no idea that would be one of my biggest financial mistakes. I just spent over $800.00 to have the Water pump changed. It took them several weeks to figure out what was wrong because of the extremely poor design of the engine (who puts the water pump inside the engine?). Oh, but the nightmare continues. Because I drive 50 miles a day, I have put over 100,000 miles on my intrepid. This means it is worth less than 1/2 of what I owe (unless I trade it -- then its only 1/4). Today, I found out from the mechanic (because it was making a knocking noise) that the engine is probably going to completely fail soon and I will need to replace it!! OH, goody, another $5,000 to $7,000 (I could buy a good used AMERICAN car for that!) By the way, my husband changes the oil every 3,000 miles without fail! and we take good care of our vehicles.
I will never buy another Dodge product and neither will anyone in my family (or any friend I can convince!).

CAR FAILURE # 389 January 19, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
2.7 Engine Failure - We own a 2001 Dodge Intrepid with 50,000 miles and recently started having problems. In October 2004, the oil light started flickering on whenever the car was idling or stopped at a stop sign and seemed to be experiencing low oil pressure. In November 2004, we took the car in for an oil change and filter. The problem continued. In December 2004, we took the car to our mechanic and he put in heavier oil and a new oil filter. We foolishly thought the problem was fixed but last week, oil was squirting out of the dipstick and the oil light indicator never came on. My husband had a trail of oil for 2 miles until he stopped at a gas station. He dumped a quart of oil in and managed to get it home and it's been parked in the garage ever since. We're just sick thinking about the problems that are yet to come and not sure what to do.

CAR FAILURE # 388 January 19, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
First and foremost, THANK YOU for your website informing and enlightening Intrepid owners about the 2.7L V6 engine. I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with the 2.7L engine. Until last night when I started a web search about the engine, and engine repairs, I had no idea that the problem was this widespread. To recap my story briefly: the Intrepid has 95k miles on it, most of them highway miles and a majority of that being cross-country type trips. I have changed the oil on regular frequency at 3k intervals and have taken care of it very well. Furthermore, as this is presently the only vehicle in our family, we have invested in the preventive maintenance as needed. On Saturday 1/15, I started the car in the AM and noticed a loud noise from the engine, much akin to that "low-oil" sound that you hear from some cars. Except this was much louder and was definitely a deep-seated mechanical sound. I checked the oil to see the dipstick with NOTHING ON IT! After immediately adding oil, and letting it run through, the noise abated somewhat, but was still very loud. I made an appointment to take it to my local Dodge dealership (..........Kingwood, TX). I did not drive it until I took it in Monday AM. They kept it for a 24-hour period, and essentially told me they'd have to tear into it to properly diagnose it. At this time, the service rep mentioned--casually--that the Intrepid engine had some known sludge issues. She couldn't elaborate or explain why, however. I gave it no further thought, and declined the service as I wanted to find a better, not to mention more affordable, engine shop option locally. They assured me it was safe to drive, but also said I should take care of ASAP. That afternoon while driving to an MD appt and before dropping off at said engine shop, I was driving on a state road at 45 MPH and the engine died. Steering froze up immediately, and I could barely muscle it even off the road. It was a pretty hairy situation for a few moments. Now I have discovered more about this engine and I am angry as hell. Do you know of any updates insofar as Daimler-Chrysler's settlement or acknowledgement of the 2.7L engine? And could you refer me to any other customers with the same problem? I assure you that I am going to pursue this in legal means and would appreciate your feedback.
Sincerely,
Joe L. TX

CAR FAILURE # 387 January 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We bought a 2001 Chrysler Sebring Limited Convertible. We purchased an extended warranty through Equis at the recommendation of our dealer. At 84011 miles, the engine failed. Inspection revealed oil sludge in the engine. Warranty was rejected on two occasions and a third time after I forwarded information to the Equis company from this website. Despite service records that indicated oil and filter changes were completed per the manual, the claim remain denied. The car failed in Dallas, Texas while my wife was on business there. The local Chrysler dealer's quoted repair price was $6,500. I towed the car back to East Texas and the dealer we purchased the car from installed a used engine sourced from a salvage yard out of state for $3800. I believe our dealer is trying to do the right thing by us, despite Chrysler's negligence. In my research of this problem, I found this model has had seven recalls. We have never received any recalls on this car. I hope none were safety related! However, I believe the third party "insurance" company is following the OEM's guidelines…reject the warranty, tell the customer it is his/her fault so they avoid tremendous recall expense for an engine, the 2.7 liter six cylinder, that has proven to be poorly designed. Even though I have been on this Earth for a half a century, I still believe you can learn something new everyday. Recently, I have determined that extended warranty contracts with third party insurance companies are not reliable. Finally, I see Chrysler continues to provide unreliable products they are just in prettier packages. I bought a new Plymouth in 1972 and a new Chrysler in 2001. Shame on you, Chrysler, for the first one…shame on me for the second one. I knew better. Rest assured it will NEVER happen again.

CAR FAILURE # 386 January 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

In August of 2001 I bought a new Dodge Intrepid and up to this point I swore it was the best car I have ever owned. All of that changed after my timing chain broke with no warning and completely trashed the engine. I only have 54000 miles on the car and still owe 18 more months on the loan. When I called my "five star" dealer spoke to the service man told him how it just quit running he told me over the phone that I probably need an entire engine at a cost of 6000$ plus tax.(wow what a bargain) blue book trade in 5,750$. I took it to an independent garage and he was right. My father works in the auto business and he set out to help me find a used or rebuilt engine for my car. Every junk yard or engine rebuilder he called knew he wanted a 2.7 as soon as he said he had a dodge jump time. Pretty sad when the rest of the world knows there is a problem and the manufacture pretends there is not. My biggest complaint is the way Chrysler is treating this problem. Trying to shift the blame of poor design on to the consumer by implying that lack of maintenance is to blame. An excuse that would be easy for me to believe if there were not so many others with the same complaint. I understand that it is a car and they all break down but I also understand that there is a distinct difference customer service and consumer disservice. I think its time for Chrysler to step up and back its products. I will have my car repaired by an independent garage and they are installing a 3.2 liter conversion in the car to get me away from the 2.7. As soon as my car is paid off I will unload it and go back to a manufacturer that is willing to stand behind its product and not hide behind excuses. If there is a class action suit being filed I would be more than interested in signing up.

CAR FAILURE # 385 January 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I too am having the same issues with my 2001 Dodge Stratus vehicle with 74000 miles. Last week I noticed a noise coming from the engine witch is also a 2.7L. Once I heard this noise I took it to the dealership right away. I had to leave my car there for almost a week, So I finally called Dodge and the service advisor told me that sludge had built up in the engine causing the valve to tap and that I needed an engine oil flush right away. He said that it was in it’s early stages and that he put special oil in the engine to help circulate the oil so it would last me a few days. He told me that he did not have this particular machine because it was too expensive and he advised me to take it to another Dodge dealership witch is only 15 miles away. They also charged me $90 to diagnose the problem. I took the car to the other Dodge Dealership immediately. They charged me $138.00 for and engine oil flush and changed the oil and filter. When I went to pick up the car I noticed that it was still making a noise coming from the engine, I asked him if this was normal and he said drive it for a couple of weeks let the oil start to circulate and let us know how it runs. I drove the car right home went to work the very next morning and my car died right in the middle of a work zone. I had the car towed right back to the same dealership where I had the oil flush done. Witch I was charged $85 for towing. The tech came out to look at the car and said the engine was dead. I couldn’t believe my ears, I was shocked! I just had the car in there 1 day ago and had it diagnosed 2 days ago and now my engine is dead! They are telling me it will cost $5600 for a new motor and it would be the same piece of junk that died the first time. I was told the engine died due to lack of maintace witch is bullcrap. I have had many and many oil changes done and they are taking no responsibility. I still owe $6600 on this car and it won’t run! I cannot believe that Dodge let me drive this car home when they knew it was about to die. Not only did my engine die but my life was put into jeopardy. My car broke done in a very very busy highway and people were not only cursing but almost got hit several times.
My issues are
1. If so many people are having this problem why isn’t Chrysler doing anything about it.
2. When I took my car to Dodge back in August to get a oil change how come I wasn’t made aware of this issue. If they noticed some build up of sludge why didn’t they tell me.
3. Why did they tell me to get a engine oil flush when it only died on me the next day.
4. Why didn’t Dodge advise me that the engine was about to die instead they let me drive it off the lot
5. Dodge will not reimburse me on the engine oil flush.
6. If I try and trade it in the way only give me $1000 in value and I’m still $5500 in the hole.
Please Help!

CAR FAILURE # 384 January 19, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

I have a 2000 Intrepid with 79,000 miles on it. It has been in my family since new. It is well taken care of including oil changes every 2000-3000 miles. As I was driving home from work last Thursday, the engine light started blinking. The car started running rough. I brought it to my mechanic and he informed me that it has no (as in zero) compression in the #1 cylinder. They also told me that it was likely a valve but couldn't promise me that it would be OK after I gave him ~$2000 for a valve job. Is this a common failure? Will Chrysler help when I call to complain? The car is in good shape otherwise. Should I drop a crate engine in it? Will I have the same issue? Any help you can provide will be much appreciated

CAR FAILURE # 383 January 18, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Twice it has happened. The car stopped working!! The first time, about a year ago, I was driving through an intersection and it just stopped. I took it in and it cost me $1200 to get it fixed. The shop owner said the guide for the timing chain broke. He told me it was from lack of maintenance, but I regularly change the oil, either myself or at the local shop. This last week, I was on the way home and the oil light went on. I parked the car immediatly but couldnt get it in the shop right away. (I went to New York for a business trip) This afternoon, my wife had to go pick up one of our kids from school and as she started the car (she was supposed to use our other car) She heard a bunch of noise (whining as she put it, along with some clanking) and that was that. I have replaced three starters, the timing chain guide, the main
computer, and now from the looks of it, quite possibly the engine. Is there any recourse? I still owe money on it and I rely on it to get to
and from work daily.

Just another story to add to you already large list of complaints. I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that has been nothing short of a nightmare. It is the absolute worst vehicle I have ever purchased, and I will never purchase another Dodge. With approx. 118,000 miles on the engine it now sets in my driveway unable to be used. Between sensors and the motor, I have been afoot more than I have been able to drive the car. I have never abused the car and have always had regular scheduled maint. done. Still owing 4,000 on a car that I can't even drive, or afford to fix sure puts a sour taste in ones mouth when it comes to Dodge products. I think I'll go back to my Chevy truck which has 265,000 miles on it, and still no problems.

My car chokes while I am driving and jerk it isle’s up and down while it is in park and drive. The engine light comes on and by the time I get an appointment to get it fixed the light goes out and they claim they can’t read the problem if the light is not on HELP before my warranty is up!!!!!!!

I am 24 years old and work full time and go school full time. At 73,000 my engine blew out on me now i have no transportation and I am stuck in a jam. I don't understand how a 2000 engine could blow out and I kept the oil change reguarly.

I own a 2001 Chrysler Concorde with 87,464 miles. It has the 2.7 liter 24V DOHC motor in it. The VIN number is ........... I owned the car for 10 months, changed the oil regularly with the correct oil, and now the motor is blown. The motor began to "tick" and the oil light first came on December 31, 2004. The dealer receipt states "A OIL LIGHT COMES ON AND ENGINE NOISE ON ACCELERATION--9995 BLOWN MOTOR". I am very dissapointed in this vehicle and regret recommending Chrysler to friends and family now. I will consider being a part of any legal action against Chrysler if nothing is done about this problem. If anyone knows of any upcoming legal action against Chrysler please email me. Please forward this to the president of Chrysler.
Thank you, Ali Elmusa.

CAR FAILURE # 376 January 15, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought a used 1999 Dodge Intrepid for my son in June 04, and then 4 mos later boom, engine blew. Now, I know it is used, but there were no signs that would have shown me I needed to fix an engine, no oil leaking, no knocking, even had a mechanic look at it, no problems.......so as women, I really did not know. Well, again, not a problem if it were repariable. The mechanic said 2800.00 to fix for a 30 day guarantee. He says everyone knows, that the 2.7 engine is junk. Well now I am out of a car. I cant afford to fix a car that would only be guaranteed 3 mos. I have to put my son in a vechicle, he's a student in Houston Texas.....mmmmm must have vechicle. So now he may loose his job, cant get there on time in such a big city on the bus. And it is causing problems getting to school, and classes. Now if chrysler wants people to buy dodges, they should do something quick. They are losing business by the millions. My husband was looking at a Dodge Ram Truck, now he is hesitant to buy.
But anyway, what do I do?

CAR FAILURE # 374 January 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I purchased a 2000 chrysler concorde from a private owner 4/5 months ago for $5,300 with a mileage of estimated around 69,736. One day the engine made some ticking noise I thought it was the timing chain, the engine cut off and would not start. I took the car to the shop close to where i stayed only to find out the next day that the engine was gone due to tensioner failure, upper engine starvation(top of the engine was not receiving any oil due to poor engine design) and sludge buildup with pictures to prove. I had to purchase a new motor from a company called jasper which came to a total of $5,504.00 for repairs. I wish I had waited and bought this 1968 lincoln continential with the same original motor running perfect for only $2,500.

1999 Intrepid, 89,000 miles, engine siezed and junked itself as my wife was driving home a few days ago. From the looks of things, our engine lasted longer than most. We kept the maintenance schedule up, changed the oil every 3,000 miles, sometimes sooner if it had been a few months. Two major tuneups done on it in the last few years as well. Bought it with 27,000 miles on it as a program car (from Enterprise
sales). My mechanic was nice enough to offer to buy the carcass from me, so maybe I'll have a sizeable chunk to put toward the loan we had
to get on the replacement car. Class action suit sounds like a good idea.

CAR FAILURE # 372 January 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I was driving my 1999 Dodge Intrepid yesterday to work when all of the sudden I heard a small rattle. It became louder and louder until the engine oil light started flickering off/on. After that the engine light stayed on and the car died on the side of the road. Chesterfield Dodge told me I had experienced complete engine failure and could do nothing about it except replace the engine for 5500.00 plus install. It is sitting there now waiting to be towed and scrapped. What do you recommend I do?

CAR FAILURE # 371 January 13, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought my car, a used, 2000 Dodge Intrepid a year and a half ago and at 70,000 miles my engine went out on the highway. Although I bought an extended warranty, it doesn't cover sludge build up and since I had a biuld up of sludge in my engine my warranty doesn't cover it I have always had oil changes and I am still having this problem with sludge build up.. Needless to say I was told to cough up $6250 for a new engine on my car.

CAR FAILURE # 369 January 12, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Well another unsatisfied customer. I purchased a 2000 Dodge Intrepid in 2003 from Hampton's Dodge Chrysler / Jeep. I also purchased an extended warranty for this vehicle. In January of 2005 the engine seized up without any warning. (no oil or engine light / no noises or hesitation in the car) I took my car to the repair shop and after three days they told me the engine seized because of lack of maintenance. This seems odd to me considering I showed proof of receipt for all oil and filters for oil changes. I am currently still waiting to see if my warranty company is going to back me on this, but the repair shop is adamant that they won't. After getting on several sites I became ill at the number of people in my shoes. Hopefully something can be done about this. Next stop - Attorney Generals Office.

I am the owner of a 2001 Dodge Intrepid and yes my 2.7 liter engine has failed also. The car was well maintained and has roughly 85,000 miles on it. Now that I have this problem and have been finding out different info, I had some of the classic signs like the white smoke from the tailpipe, the burning of oil, and the heater not heating the cabin properly. Any info you have that may help me would be greatly appreciated. I had no idea these were "warning signs" that my engine was going to fail.
Thanks in advance,
Tremaine

CAR FAILURE # 367 January 12, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I am writing to try to get some information on and action I can take against Chrysler for my engine failure. I have a '99 dodge intrepid with around 81,000 miles on it. I recently was deployed between late October thru January. Soon after leaving my car engine began knocking very badly and the engine quit while my wife was driving. This occurred while she was traveling with our 3 children...including a new born....at around 45 mph. After getting a ride back to our house my wife contacted the local dodge dealer and was informed that the engine was shot and that one of the rods had gone. They also explained that the only fix was a new engine. Which varied in price from $3200.00-$9000. I have been told the same excuse by several people also that it was my fault and that I was probably not changing the oil as required. Since this was our only form of transportation I had to return from my deployment to assist my family. Now I feel that since this is a known problem Chrysler should have to finally accept their failure and do something about it. I would appreciated and assistance and information for who or where I need to contact. I have already contacted a local news agency and they requested that I contact them back and let them knw if I do get assistance or not so that they can get involved. I request an expeditious reply to this situation.
Thank you

CAR FAILURE # 366 January 12, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
On January 08, 2005 my 2001 Dodge Intrepid's engine blew. The mechanic said the whole engine needs to be replaced. This was caused by sluge in the oil stopping the flow to neccessary parts of the engine. The oil in the vehicle was changed every 3,000 miles as per the owner's manual. My mechanic suggested changing the oil and filter every 1,500 miles and not following Chrysler's manual. This doesn't help the fact that I have to change my engine or the other consumers that don't realize this problem with the engine exists. The estimate to fix the car is $7,000.

I own a 2001 dodge stratus with the 2.7 liter dohc engine. Recently my oil light comes on when I come to a stop and goes of when I accelerate. I have 62000 miles on it. My mechanic told me to get rid of the car because the engine is failling. I will never by a dodge again.

CAR FAILURE # 363 January 12, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
1999 Dodge Intrepid...my very 1st brand new car, a car that I purchased to drive for years to come because of its great reputation, failed at 82,000 miles. I guess I am the fortunate one, as the engine seized in my driveway while backing out, and not 20 minutes later on the freeway with my newborn baby in it. The dealership says I failed to take care of it properly, and the Daimler-Chrysler refuses to believe/admit there is a problem. I have had problems with the speed sensor, numerous trips to dealership for window problems, heater not blowing hot air unless accelerating, defroster seem to work in reverse. I did have the oil changed or had my husband change the oil every 3000-3500 miles, but never dreamed I would need to keep all receipts etc. I'm late paying it off trying to manage 2 car notes is not easy. I'll help bring Daimler-Chrysler to their knees any way I can!

CAR FAILURE # 362 January 11, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My wife just had to have a convertible 2001 Chrysler Sebring. I have never been a fan of Chrysler products, but we purchased the car anyway with the extended warranty offered through Equis for 100,000 miles or 5 years. The warranty was $1,795. at the time of sale. During the week of December 6, 2004 my wife was in Dallas, TX. on business and she called to say the engine was "clattering" after she bought gas. I didn't think much of it until it steadily worsened. She never had any alarm indicators such as the oil light or check engine soon, etc. Friday afternoon she called to say the car repeatedly died and seemed to have no power. She parked it and waited for me to make the two hour trip to Dallas to pick her up. The clattering she referred to was more indicative of a timing chain "rattle" when the chain is loose and hitting the guard. I was not overly concerned if this was the problem, because the car had 84,011 miles on it. Under the Equis warranty, we arranged a wrecker to pick up the car on Saturday, December 11. It was towed to a dealership not two miles away. If I had known, I would probably have tried to drive it there myself, despite the knocking that had developed. The dealer requested oil service records which we provided. The extended warranty provider denied the claim saying the engine had suffered oil starvation due to sludge in the engine. I asked for reconsideration as we had provided the service records and it was rejected again. I have since towed the car to the local dealership in East Texas and arranged for a replacement with a used engine to reduce the cost to $4,000. Today, January 11, 2005, I found all the similar failures listed on this website. I am currently discussing with my dealer and the extended warranty company to reconsider our claim again. I faxed them the 70 pages of information to assure they had the necessary documentation. If this fails again, I would like to know if a class action suit has been generated for this problem? If so, where do we sign up?

1999 Dodge Dakota oil pressure all of a sudden did a nose dive. The dealer said it was a oil pump. It cost me $881 and after they installed it and started it up still no oil pressure. Now They tell me it is a sludge problem. This is total BULL!!!!!!!!!

I have driven my 2001 Dodge Intrepid with 2.7 engine since it was new. I purchased the vehicle from Town & Country Leasing when the lease ran out. It was leased to the company I worked for ........... I had the oil changed between 3 to 4000 miles. The car has 82,937 miles on it now. .......... On Jan 5th driving down interstate 485 and heard a knocking noise on the bottom of the engine to a Loud pop with al lot of smoke and al lot of noise. Then my engine locked down. I know you have had over 500 complaints about the 2.7 engine and nothing is being done about it. Do you think anything ever will.

CAR FAILURE # 358 January 11, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I currently own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that has recently failed due to engine failure. The first response from the Dealer is that the engine had spun a crank bearing. After the initial quote of $6,000 I chose to have a private mechanic perform the repairs since the dealer had informed me that the only recourse would be to replace the engine. After an independent mechanic pulled the engine and removed the oil pan, to our surprise it looked like tar was pored in the engine. This engine only had 51,000k miles on it with regularly scheduled oil changes every 2-2.5k miles. The dealer would not take any responsibility. After searching the internet and several salvage yards I found a used engine for $2,000. Total cost of repairs are well over $4,000 and I am not certain if this is the way I should go. The more I gather information on this issues the more upset I become due to the frequency I read that involves the defect of the product.

CAR FAILURE # 357 January 10, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2001 Chrysler Concorde that seized in May of 2004 with approximately 76000 miles on it. I had my engine checked in December of 2003 at 70348 miles when it began making an intermittent clicking noise. To make a long story short, Spokane Chrysler said that I needed a new engine. I asked the service manager what would case an engine failure at such low mileage, he stated "they just go bad". Never once was I told that I did not maintain my car by this dealership. Last week I requested a new quote to replace my engine to send to Chrysler. The total cost is $6809 for a rebuilt 2.7 liter engine. The service technician stated that the 2.7 liter engine does run hot therefore you must use synthetic oil so the engine does not sludge up again. Funny, my owners manual says that 5W30 is preferred and synthetic MAY be used.
I received a call from Tim Romine on 12/29/04. He stated that he was from Chrysler Corporation. He said Chrysler would like to come to a reasonable resolution with me in regard to my engine problem. He requested that I send him my maintenance records, the quote to repair my car and I could call him or put in writing what I felt Chrysler should pay to fix my car. After coming across your web site, thankfully before I sent Tim any information, I gave Tim a call back. The phone was answered by Impartial Services Group, not Chrysler Corporation. Tim said his company handles all Lemon Law, buybacks, etc., for Chrysler. I asked Tim for the "compensation criteria". He stated that he did not have any. He said that if I would just send in my oil and filter receipts, they would look at them. He stated that Chrysler did not have a policy on reimbursement. However, the consumer would have to sign a waiver. He faxed a copy of that waiver to me. By signing it I would release DaimlerChrysler, it subsidiaries and dealerships, from all known and unknown claims, damages, costs, fees, loss of services, personal injuries and property damage related to date to my car. I would also have to indemnify and hold the parties harmless from all further claims, costs or expenses relating to this claim. Impartial Services is located at 2777 Stemmons Freeway, Suite 1425, Dallas, Texas 75207. Thank you for this website, I await the day Chrysler steps up and takes responsibility for this issue.

I have and 2001 Intrepid with a 2.7 engine which had an oil light and rod knock in it. it has had the standard maintenance performed on it. I have been told that the engine has to be replaced. It has 61000 miles. The local Dodge house said it was not a common problem and that it may have been caused by not following the maintenance procedures exactly. Quote - " the 2.7 is very sensitive to maintenance ". The cost is quoted at $6700.

CAR FAILURE # 355 January 09, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I picked my Intrepid (2.7L) up from being serviced (oil and filter change included) and drove it for less than 100 miles when the engine began to mildly tick when I went over 2 RPMs. A few miles down the road the ticking became steady and constant. Since there were no warning lights on the dash to a serious problem I continued to drive to my destination as my son called the auto repair shop to see what may be causing the problem. Not too long after the tick became constant the engine began to knock loudly. Still, no dash lights warned me to any problems with my engine. As the knocking grew louder, I began to hear strange noises as if objects were falling apart under my hood. I decided to pulled over into my employers parking lot to have one of my co-workers investigate the problem. He told me to contact the place that serviced it to see if they could fix the problem. The next day, the garage that serviced my car had towed it in so they could see what was wrong with it. The mechanic explained that the engine blew and he did not know why since it ran fine when I left the day before. He explained that the seals did not blow, it still had 40 or 60 lbs (?) oil pressure but it was like it just fell apart. This confused him because an engine as new as this should not have this problem. Besides it was a 2002, less than three years old, and only had 58,770 miles on it. He investigated the engine and its history and found that the Dodge Intrepid 2.7L engine was known to blow at low mileage. He said that this explained the thickness of the oil when he when to change it. The sludge of the oil seems to be a uniform problem for the 2.7L even when routinely changed. I called the dealership that sold me the vehicle and the said that Chrysler would help me and so far no one has yet to help me with my problem. The dealership seems to be frequently losing my phone number because they never seem to call me back. Considering I am a single mother who still owes $10,000. on a car that is useless and have no other means of transportation. A Chrysler, customer service representative whom I considered to be somewhat rude, told me that if I had a service contract purchased that they could help me but I did not so they can't. I told this to the salesman who sold it to me and he explained that I was probably never given the option of purchasing such a plan. So, how could I have helped my situation other than not buying a Chrysler/Dodge vehicle? I really wish that your company would stand behind your vehicles instead of screwing over the less fortunate Intrepid owners. A response would be nice other than one that explains how sorry you are that I purchased one of your vehicles.

CAR FAILURE # 354 January 09, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My Intrepid with the awesome 2.7 litre boat anchor failed at 116000 miles. I do primarily highway driving and maintained my car religiously with Mobil 1 (always) and a new filter EVERY 3000 miles. This engine should in no way have failed and I am just as pissed off as I can be. Dodge could care less, they 'respectfully decline' compensation. These jerks should be forced to replace every single 2.7 litre engine in existence.

CAR FAILURE # 353 January 08, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My engine blew at 54,000. I bought the car from a dealership with only 33,000. I have always kept the oil changed at 3000. I have had to replace the speed sensor and one of the cooling fans. From reading complaints from others I guess the brakes or something worse are next because of the shaking of steering wheel when braking. The defrost system has never worked right. This past summer it did appear that the air conditioner was not cooling as well. The mechanic told me it would take $4700. to $5000. to replace the engine. I am SICK! I have been trying to get my disability started for three years. I have tried my best to hold on to the "best" car that I have ever owned. No more! I am letting them have it back! I am finished! I will never do business with Chrysler again!

Problem with my 2001 Intrepid. Oil light is coming on only after a 45 to 60 minute trip, and only when I stop at a stop light, or stop sign. No problems what so ever with the car until now. What do you think?

Thank you so much for the heads up!! We just had our Intrepid go out.....we've owned it 2 years and of course owe a bunch of money on it.
It's sickening making a $300 a month payment for a driveway ornament. Thanks again for the info.

CAR FAILURE # 350 January 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Last November our 2000 Chrysler Concorde stopped running one day along the highway! We had the car towed and were told that because we did not get the latest oil change at a regular interval the engine filled up with sludge and died. I still had and have car payments and had to purchase a used $5,000 engine and was told that I would only get a 1 year warranty on that also. Today, the engine with only 15,000 miles on it, let me sitting on the PA turnpike. It may have been a belt or another engine problem. We will not know until tomorrow. It is so sad that a huge corporation, such as Chrysler will not help out the little people. I will write them a letter expressing my feelings about their products today.
Very truly yours,

CAR FAILURE # 349 January 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We purchased a 99 Dodge Intrepid two years ago, and it had been in the shop more often than not. After 6 months we had to replace the transmission. It was under warranty, buy Dodge wouldn't cover a new tyranny, only a rebuilt! We had problems with the windows, the door locks...on and on. A couple of weeks ago we brought the car in for it's 100k tune up. As we were driving home, the oil light came on and we heard the now infamous knocking sound. We took it back to the shop the next day...and were told we have two options. Replace the engine for $7000 or drive it into the ground. So now we are making a $300 a month payment on a car that sits in our garage, useless. I have told every friend to stay away from Dodge/Chrysler....and when I see people in the parking lot getting out of their Intrepids, I tell them to sell it quick while it's still running!

CAR FAILURE # 348 January 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We own a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with a 2.7 liter engine. Our car has 75,000 miles on it and has been very well maintained. On Saturday, January 1, 2005, (happy new year) we were driving around 65 mph on the highway when suddenly I noticed the oil light begin to flicker. Just as quickly, the car seemed to loose power and we began hearing a faint ticking noise. We got off on the next exit and about half way up the ramp, the car died. I had no power steering or anything. We coasted to the top of the ramp and stopped. I tried to restart the car but only got a clicking sound. These events all happened within two or three minutes. There was no prior indication of a problem and barely time to react. We were later told that the engine had seized and would have to be replaced. The more mechanics we talk to the more we hear the same story, that these engines don't last. We were given estimates of $3400.00 to $5700.00, which is about what the car was worth prior to this happening. We will have to start over with nothing to put down or trade in on a new car nor were we prepared for another car payment. We contacted Chrysler, but of course they say there is nothing they can do for us. It is appalling to read all of these stories just like ours and know that Chrysler allows this to happen to so many hard working, middle class people. I intend to make everyone I come in contact with aware of what a horrible product Chrysler sells and encourage them to visit this site and to not be victimized by this company and be put in the same awful position that we are in now.

CAR FAILURE # 347 January 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
While driving to work, I heard a knocking sound in the vehicle. I drove the vehicle home on my lunch hour for my husband to look at it. I turned the car off and it would not restart. We had it towed to the dealership and the mechanic initially stated that it might have been the timing chain. After he further inspected the vehicle, we were told that there was sludge in the engine. This vehicle has regular oil changes so this didn't make sense to us. Also, there were no oil lights or engine problem warning lights to indicate a problem. The manufacturer refused any assistance with the repair that was to cost $6700.00 because they felt sludge due to improper maintenance was the cause. We informed them that we have a 1993 Mercury Villager with over 140,000 and the Intrepid only had 47,000 and they both had regular oil changes but the Villager has never had engine problems. This did not matter to them and they refused any help with the cost of repair. Still in shock by the lack of concern or responsibility of DiamlerChrysler we sent a letter to their customer advocate office.

CAR FAILURE # 346 January 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge On the verge of Engine Failure
A few months ago, this car with about 82000 miles started to smoke blue on take off. Now, with 86,000 miles it stalls, no start, fans quit, coolant leak from thermostat housing, etc. We have had the window problems also, along with rough idle, but it was ok and repaired by my mechanic. Now I'm afraid that the will take dump. What steps now? Jimmy

CAR FAILURE # 343 January 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

Hi - Me and my wife bought a Dodge Intrepid and the engine stopped at 62,000 miles. It's going to cost over 5,000 to fix it. It's been sitting for 6 months. In some one of the messages on here it was saying that the Chrysler said that people weren't maintaining the vehicle orrectly. Most of these messages are saying that it was the sludge buildup that caused it to stop. Well I had my engine looked at and there was no sludge buildup at all. It was very clean. There is another article that I read that was saying the part that causes this engine failure costs about 20 dollars. Now it seems to happen to the 2.7 engines and the mileage on the cars are at about 35,0000 to 75,000 miles when the engine decides to stop. I think this is way people are starting to buy foreign cars. So in all of this it's not due to poor maintenance it's due to Chrysler building crappy cars.

CAR FAILURE # 342 January 05, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

Around the first of December 2003 I was driving my 1999 Intrepid with 50,000 miles when the engine oil light came on, so I turned off the engine and checked the oil the oil was fine so i idled the car back home which was one mile. The following monday I idled the car to the Dodge Dealership where I had bought the car & $2500 bumper to Bumber Extended warranty on the car. I changed my own oil. They told me that the engine was full of sludge because I did'nt change the oil properly. which is bull. Since it didn't change the oil properly the extended warranty was only good for toilet paper. I paid $600.00 for them to clean the engine. I got the car back and it ran allright and made no noises. So i took it to a chrysler dealership and traded it in may 04 for a kia sedonia they gave me 4500.00 for the car.
so I didn't get burned on the engine. my neighbor had a 2000 intrepid and I told her she needed to get rid of it because they have bad engines she said she would, two weeks later she was driving it and the engine blew up. dodge wanted $6500 to repair the engine it had 60,000 miles on it She still has 2 years of payments left. This is the second time chrysler has screwed me on a vehicle so I will never buy any chrysler vehicle plus I tell everyone that I talked to about chrysler vehicles. I have talked several people out of buying there vehicles and when I talk to someone who owns a chrysler or dodge vehicle, like at walmart or the grocery store I tell them how bad they are and give them a business card with websites to go too. Since they are such a big company and don,t care about there customers. All I can do is tell everyone I meet how bad they are and tell them to get rid of it. I get great satisfaction in knowing that I kept them from getting a sale. Myself and my whole family plan to keep this up till spades freezes

CAR FAILURE # 339 January 05, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Our story is not yet a horror story, but still upsetting. My oil light started flickering when the car was idling at a stop. My husband does all of our repairs himself and went to the part store to buy a part to try to solve the problem. The employee working at the part store told my husband about all the problems the 2.7 engines were having and even said he had to fill order for a dealership that was currently working on one. This was news to us! My husband came home and starting looking up this engine on the Internet when he found your website, we were very surprised and upset to learn how many people had their engines die at such low miles. The more we read the more upset we were and we decided to go trade our car in before anything worse happened since the oil light problem seems to be an early warning sign. Our Concord is a 2000 that we bought a year and a half ago with 43,000 miles for $11,000. We traded in our old 1993 Concord for $4,000 and paid $7,000. We liked our old Concord so much we wanted to buy a new one. Should have kept the old one! We went to the Chevy dealership to look at a blazer and the manager told us he would make us a good deal that we had a nice car. He went to make a few phones calls to the Chrysler dealerships he deals with and came back with an offer of $4,000 for our trade. He said that when he talked the Chrysler dealers they said that because our car had the 2.7 engine it wasn't worth anymore than that. He said, "I'm not sure if your aware of the 2.7 engine problem but, those engines are seizing at around 50,000 miles and your car has 55,000. You are lucky that it is still running." He told us we were better off to try to sell it privately and we could probably get $7,000 for it. How could we sell this car in good faith to any one!? We are now debating trading it in at a big loss or just sit on it and cross our fingers that our Concord isn't the next to go or that Chrysler will make good and recall their engines before ours dies! We wish we knew about this website before we bought our car, lesson learned. We will definitely research our next vehicle, which by the way, will not be a Chrysler!

CAR FAILURE # 338 January 05, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

My 1999 Dodge Intrepid with 2.7 liter engine developed failure of hydraulic tensioner for the timing chain. The Chrysler Dealer is recommending I install a Chrysler reconditioned engine at a cost of about $6000. We still have almost 2 years of payments on the car to go and the repair of this common problem costs more than the car is worth (and Chrysler gets to sell me another engine). There are too many people out there having this problem.

CAR FAILURE # 337 January 04, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My engine failed on several occasions, both times I was driving. I had the engine replaced and the second one also died. The car has been in the repair shop for about six months now because they can't find a good engine to replace it with and we were told that those engines is no dam good. The car is in very good condition, looks like new but engine problems over and over again.
Thanks, Phil

CAR FAILURE # 336 January 04, 2005 - Chrysler

Hello all! I have been fighting Chrysler Canada over my Intrepid for the last 1 1/2 years. The vehicle has computer problems after a Chrysler dealership "repaired" the transmission, which failed, as well as power steering, fuel injection system, cruise control computer etc. etc.
Nobody is even willing to talk about some of my issues that are "out of warranty" !! Never driven a worse vehicle in my life. My Volkswagen 1976 drives better. Keep up the good work.
Regards, Bert C.

CAR FAILURE # 335 January 04, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I purchased a 2000 Chrysler Concorde LX, with the 2.7L engine, in October 2003. With only 60,000 km on it and the original warranty having run out, I also purchased with the car an extended warranty. Well, on October 30,2004, with only 78,000 km on the car the engine fails - 2 weeks out of the warranty period!! After having it towed to the dealership and an estimate done - I find out the timing chain had broken and took with it the valve covers, lifters and the top corner of the engine. I am still battling with the dealership over the repair. Their estimate was for $8000.00, and Chrysler would pick up HALF the cost, but only with a NEW engine installed from their plant. I and so furious and upset with them, not so much as an offer of a courtesy car while the estimate was being done, and a dealer owner that refuses to take any responsibility and on top of that extremely rude. I even tried talking to the guy at the dealership who sold me the car. This is a huge Chrysler dealership and they could care less. They are just lucky that this happened in my driveway and not while I was driving it, with my 3 kids on the highway!! I am now left with the only alternative but to try and get them to pay in court. I am using the Lemon Aid 2004 Guide as my guide - and have written the necessary letters to them and Chrysler Canada. Here it is now Jan 3/05 and I am still without a car. I did have a second estimate done and it is just as high - $6000.00 If you know of any other ideas to assist me please let me know. Help!! I am in Calgary, Alberta Canada, so I don't know if you have any sources here Thanks in advance

CAR FAILURE # 334 January 04, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My 1999 Intrepid (72,350 miles), 2.7 is still at the garage that pulled the valve cover. We owe them a couple hundred just for that and still don't know what we're going to do with it. We just don't have thousands of dollars to add to the value of a car that's marked. I've never had a car completely die like this and I really love the car. We took digital pictures of the engine when the mechanic called us about it, UNBELIEVEABLE sludge. Nothing but varnished oil due to overheating and NO indication of overheating at all. I've heard several different opinions from mechanics but basic deduction is overheating from a badly designed aluminum engine that can't take the heat. Wish I had used synthetic oil a long time ago. I still can't believe it. Please keep us in the loop as I'm ready to do whatever needed to be compensated for loss.

Thank you for all you do. I appreciate the updates. My car died at 40,000 miles and I have a rebuilt engine in it. I worry everyday that it will go again before I get it paid off. I will never own another Chrysler/Dodge again. All of your hard work is greatly appreciated!

My 2000 Dodge Intrepid (2.7L) died last week. The engine needs to be replaced. I'm not very happy. I want them to pay for it! I can't believe a company this big is made up of such cowardly, irresponsible, greedy people. I'll take any advice I can get!

CAR FAILURE # 331 January 03, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I purchased a Chrysler Sebring (2002 lx) with the 2.7L engine. I purchased my vehicle 11 months ago. Despite changing the the oil (and having documented) 7 times in the past year, my engine failed on Dec 23, 2004. The outcome is still pending. Please feel free to contact me if you need any info. Thank you for taking up this cause for so many of us!

CAR FAILURE # 330 January 03, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 1999 dodge intrepid that after about 70000 miles I noticed problems. After going to a dodge dealership on a number of occasion and they so called do what they claim repairing the problem, changed oil every 3000 sometimes 2000 miles because my oil was low and oil light was coming on my engine threw a rod. Thousands of dollars spent on this peace of junk. I also made two more trips to the dealer ship to see if they would back there product and there service up. I'll see them in court I guess.

How do we contact these people, my car died at 54,000 and is still sitting in my backyard rotting. Can't justify the 4700 dollars they want for a motor, while I'm still paying 260 dollars a month for the piece of garbage. Please let me know.

CAR FAILURE # 328 January 02, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 2001 intrepid and a few months ago the engine started making a ticking noise. The engine is the 2.7 and now the oil light is flickering at low rpms. Today I pulled the oil pan to see if maybe the pickup tube was blocked. My car has only 50000 miles on it and the pan was full of sludge. The car has had oil changed every 3000 miles and the inside of the pan looks like a car with 300000 miles on it. I haven't cantacted the dodge place yet but I am about to. If there is a lawsuit about this car please let me know. I will be glad to get involved. This is redicilous.

CAR FAILURE # 327 January 01, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Less than 54000 miles on it, I am the second owner; the first owner was a route salesman and had put 24K highway miles on it. I do my own oil changes and was told point blank that I would not be able to prove they were done unless I had commercial receipts. The first time the oil light came on was late November, since then it has been driven very carefully back and forth to the shop 2 times. I do not have the money to do a 1200.00 motor flush recommended, nor do I have the money to pay for a motor if needed. The past month and a half it has been a very expensive driveway ornament, I did not even get a full year’s use out of it, bought it in March of 2004 and problems starting in November 2004. I will not continue to drive it, it would be irresponsible to do that when the information on the net is so specific on the problems. So I have decided to stop payments on the vehicle and in due course will be filling for bankruptcy the first of January to get out from under the loan, all thanks to Dodge. First and last Dodge/Chrysler product.

CAR FAILURE # 326 January 01, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I was just amazed at how many cars are bad, I to have a dodge intrepid with a bad engine it seems that now that even the junk yards are getting in the picture I was told by my service guy that a 2.7 engine from the junk yard with 60000 miles on it would cost me 2900 dollars I truly hope that dodge will do the right thing and get these cars fixed. Its not right that all of these cars have the same problem and dodge seems to think that its owners problem please some one help.

CAR FAILURE # 325 January 01, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My car stop in the middle of traffic on a Sunday. With no signs that something was wrong with the engine. We try giving it a jump thinking it
was the battery, but no response. The next step was the starter still no response. Okay it the motor. But why I just had a oil change two weeks ago and it was running perfect. But as I can see with researching the car on the web I'm not alone with this problem.

CAR FAILURE # 324 December 31, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My wife and I owned a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with the infamous 2.7L engine. The engine failed in late November of 2003 while she was driving down the highway at 60 mph. She sustained no injuries but was scared half to death and had to wait in freezing temperatures several hours for help to arrive. We always used the same mechanic when servicing the vehicle. The oil and filter were changed nearly every 3000 miles and we have records to verify this. The mechanic examined the engine and found sludge throughout the motor. He said that he had seen this problem four times before in 2003 and all were Chrysler/DodgeL engines.  We went on the Internet to see if others were having similar problems, and lo and behold, there are literally thousands of identical failures. I contacted the local dealership, and they told me we were out of warranty (96,000 miles) and there was nothing they coould do. I contacted customer service at Daimler-Chrysler headquarters and they said that they were not aware of ANY problems with the 2.7L engine. Daimler-Chrysler refused to help in any way.  We replaced the engine with a used 2.7L (only one that will fit) costing nearly $3500 with labor. This used motor alone cost over $2000. We purchased it from a local salvage yard. I asked the salvage yard owners why a USED engine could be this expensive and the reply was that the engines were in tremendous demand---go figure! With the tow bill, car rental and engine replacement, we were out nearly $4000. We drove cautiously and "babied" the replacement engine, fearing engine failure again. In December of 2004, the oil light began staying on constantly. Our mechanic advised us that this engine was about to fail too. We traded the car off immediately giving us a nice $600/month payment and sales taxes to deal with at the holiday. Daimler-Chrysler MUST do something to compensate us and the countless others who have benn victimized by this failure. We have joined class-action suits but fear that they will amount to nothing. Please advise us of any further actions that we can take to recupe our losses.
Thanks,
Dennis E.

I am the owner of a 'dead' 1998 Dodge Intrepid. Without warning, my car shut off at a busy intersection and had to be towed. I was told the engine 'seized up' and would need to be replaced at an estimated cost of $5000!! I couldn't believe what I was hearing---I faithfully have my car serviced and didn't believe this could happen! Found your website and realized I am not alone! Chrysler needs to step up to the plate and take responsibility for their lousy engine!!!

CAR FAILURE # 319 December 31, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a Dodge Intrepid. I loved the car. I felt safe, had a great ride, and I didn't have many problems. Then on December 15, 2004, I had nothing!!! I was driving down the road to work, the oil light came on, and within 2miles I was on the side of the road with a dead car! I have been franticly looking for a solution to my problem. At Sunbelt in Lake City they wanted to help me get a new car. Not happening. Winterpark Dodge wanted to help too. This is where I got a real sense of the"Rat "I thought I smelled. I was told my car was of no value. The engine had seized. An employee of the above mentioned dealership said, "cylinder #3 is sluggish causing OIL STARVATION to the engine." I am at a loss, not just $9500, but what can I do? I see reports that a rebuild is just another problem cause there has been no recall on the engine so the same problem remains. Can you imagine a Corporation like Diamler continuing to sell this product? NO, they quit making the car. "RAT" Will they help the customer??? NO, the customer caused the problem. We didn't take the car to their service center and therefore they will not be concerned with good. constant care. I will continue to help others fight to get reimbursement on these "OIL STARVED" engines. Annette K.

CAR FAILURE # 318 December 31, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Oh, yeah, let me get in on all the "fun"! I also have a lovely driveway ornament/playtoy that's just sitting in my driveway, DEAD! My beautiful 2000 Intrepid with 71, 066 miles on it. One day the oil light started to flicker, then the knocking started, then dead, all within 2 minutes. I was told I need a new engine, and that my particular engine is very, very hard to find, and that it's the most expensive engine to buy out there. (That's because this is such a hugh problem happening to so many owners, that supply cannot meet demand). Total cost to repair, $5,000.00. I wasn't paying that much for a new engine in a car worth about $3,800.00 when it is running. So it sits in my driveway, and the kids use it for a catcher when they play wiffle ball. I have since bought another car, and I am in for the fight until the end. Victory will be ours.

CAR FAILURE # 317 December 31, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Yes i am one of the fools that bought a brand new 2000 dodge intrepid. With just a little over 70'000 miles on it i now have a piece of Chrysler junk that i still owe 11'000 dollars on it so i called the bank to come and repose the car well it seems they don't want it. I am disabled and cant work we bought the car for my wife and she is the only one who drove the car the oil was changed every three thousand miles and was never abused i have bought four new cars from Chrysler but i will never buy another one . My advice to anyone who owns a Chrysler product and it is still running get rid of it you are driving a time bomb" ps.i bought my wife a used 1990 Cadillac for $3500 with over a hundred thousand miles and it still runs like new. I have contacted Daimler Chrysler about there 2.7 engines and they just don't give a rats back about there customers.

I'm not the only one I see! I have a 2004 Dodge Intrepid. I was on my way to work when my engine died. Luckily it happened on a Sunday so there wasn't a lot of traffic. About 2 miles from where I lived, the oil light went on and about less then a half mile later, the engine decides to die on me. I sent it to the Chrysler dealer where of course they were stick in the muds and said that it will not be covered under warranty. I am still some 10 days later waiting to see if it will be covered. WHAT SERVICE!

My daughter has a 1999 Chrysler Dodge Intrepid with a 2.7 engine. It has been parked almost 3 and half years. While she was driving her car, engine failed. She is paying car note. Pay off date is March 2005. She is a single parent. My daughter wants to buy a house. If she did not pay her car note, it will go on her credit report. It is a shame that she is paying all that money for a car that is not running.

Thanks for the information, our car was repossessed about 2 weeks ago because the bank did not believe that it was broke. I really hope that
something is done soon because we paid as long as we could well over 15 months with out the use of the car. I will go to the website and see
what is going on.

CAR FAILURE # 313 December 30, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My 2000 Intrepid is sitting in the driveway dead and I took actually had it towed to the dealer the one and only time I saw the oil light on. What a fool I was to not take any chances by having it towed. After replacing a part and charging me $400.00 I drove it home only to have the engine light come on again the next day. Drove it back to the dealer they had it for about a month while I got together my receipts for my oil changes only for them to tell me I was two oil changes short. I told them I would be picking it up and they had already taken the engine apart without my permission when I picked it up it drove for a mile and shut off and hasn't run since. I had that stupid car for two years and still owed 4yrs of payments I am still paying for the P O S and am now driving a Toyota. I will never buy an American car again. Needless to say the dealer kept my receipts and somehow can't find them. So I am trying to save 5,000 to put an engine in it so my son can drive it. Chrysler already knew about me and said there is nothing I could do because I didn't take care of the car. What a bunch of crooks. I have noticed though that I don't see as many Intrepids on the road as I used too, HMMM maybe they have sludge problems too!!! Poor Maintenance on their part too I assume. Thanks for the info and good luck to you. Anne Walters PS My Intrepid has only 52000 miles on it.

CAR FAILURE # 310 December 30, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My problems started before May 25, 2004 but I didn't know it. On this day, the noise on my Intrepid got so loud and constant that I took it to my mechanic. He told me about the famous sludge problem with the 2.7. MY wife works at a garage and her mechanics worked with us to try to make things better. We cleaned out the engine, changed the oil every other week and babied it. Things seemed to get better. If I started the engine and it was noisy, usually all I'd have to do is to shut it off and restart the engine and the noise would go away. We all that ended on November 12. I was in Detroit on business, just had the oil changed the night before and when I started the car, it was as loud as Ted Nugent. I shut it down, it quieted down for a mile and then all hell broke loose. It got really noisy. As I attempted to turn the corner from 6 mile road onto the Southfield Highway, the engine stalled. Thank God I had enough momentum to get through the intersection and avoid a Detroit City bus.
I pulled over, tired to restart the engine - nothing! I called a local mechanic, he looked at it and said it was cooked! To get home I had to have a tow truck take me 180 miles. We took the car to my wife's work. A team of mechanics converged on the car. The bet's were on - and I lost. After tearing the engine down, they found tons of sludge. We have found a used engine for a decent price and they are trying to install it. Guess what goes for sale as soon as it's put back together. The only remaining question is how big of a loss I will take as I still owe on this junker. ps. my correspondence to Chrysler has been to no avail.

December 29, 2004 - Beware of so called compensation offers
On Monday 12/28/04 I received a call from someone alleging to be from Daimler Chrysler requesting information about my engine oil sludge. I faxed the information that I had on hand to the representative. After investigating, I ascertained that the calls came from an independant firm employed by Chrysler. Guess what!? Not surprisingly that since I did not have proof of every oil change I was denied any help. I bought my car with 33,000 miles on it. The damage was done prior to my owning it. I got exactly what I expected from Daimler Chrysler. Absolutely nothing.
Also just a side note. I have two relatives who work for Chrysler and they knew what was wrong with my car before the mechanic ever called to give me the bad news. Isn't it interesting that Chrysler's own employees won't even buy their products.
Sincerely,
Kathryn H.

Bought a 99 Intrepid last year with 50,000 miles on it. About three weeks ago (62,500 miles) there was a loud knocking sound coming from the engine. When I was going to take it to the Dodge dealer for diagnosis, the noise stopped, I kind of assumed it was the timing chain. Three weeks later the knocking came back and while the car was idling in the driveway before leaving for the Dodge service department the car died. Just found out today the timing chain went. I have a 2001 Chrysler Sebring Convertible which when I bought it I thought it would be a nice relaxing car. I couldn't have been more wrong! My car has been up there for numerous things ranging from radio problems to the most current engine problem. I smelled burning wires on my way to work on Monday Dec. 27, 2004 and then my engine light came on. So I called the dealership to have them come and get it. The first thing they told me is that they can't come get it because I was 4 miles outside of their range that they come and pick up cars. They then informed me I could pay to have it towed to their dealership! So I risked it and drove it to my home and had them pick it up there. They called and informed me that they needed to replace the camshaft and camshaft position sensor. My car has 39,500 miles and now I have to worry about the possibility of a new engine from what I read on this site! I am glad I found this site because I have to pick up my car tonight and I am taking this with me! I could go on and on about all my experiences with this company and this particular dealership but they don't pertain to this specific problem.

I have a 2000 Intrepid that timing chain failed while on the road. Fortunately, I was coasting to a stoplight at the time, so I had a straight line stop. Had to push the car off road in Saturday night traffic though. I thought it was me. Just changed the oil, about 3 weeks and 200 miles before the failure. Anything I can do for recourse?

CAR FAILURE # 305 December 28, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Yep, like everyone else I been reading of, my 99 Concord w/2.7 engine has oil sludge problems. The dealership acknowledges that this is the worst engine Chrysler has ever built and doesn’t even want to waste time and money on a tear down and inspection. They want 6800.00, plus tax of course, to replace the engine. I have 76890 miles on the car and have changed the oil every 3000 miles. Vin# - - - - - - - is now another pile of Chrysler junk. I’m telling everyone I know. I’ll never purchase another Chrysler product.

Add us to the list. On Christmas Eve I left work only to have my car, a 2000 Dodge Intrepid w/ 48,000 miles not start. My husband who knows his way around an engine realized one of the timing chains was broke. I little upset but we can handle that. Imagine our surprise at the garage to find out we need a new engine. The cost was quoted anywhere from 4,400 to 7,000!!! Like alot of others I still owe $4,200 on the car. So I will also bring the car home and park it. But I will have to continue to pay DiamlerChrysler my payment for another 12 months or it will hurt my credit. Won't hurt them a bit. Merry Christmas To Us!!

CAR FAILURE # 303 December 28, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

In the first part of the year 2003, my wife's Dodge Intrepid engine (2.7) seized up on her. We took it to the Chrysler dealership in Austin, Texas. They broke open the engine and, quite honestly, I thought someone had taken a bucket of mud and thrown it into the engine. Being a former diesel mechanic in the Marines as well as growing up around vehicles in a small town in Central Texas, I know a little about cars but by no means do I consider myself an expert mechanic. However, I do know a sludged engine when I see one. That day, I saw one textbook if there is such a thing. We were told by Chrysler that since we couldn't put together a good enough maintenance history on the vehicle (my wife having recently divorced her 1st husband and his lack of cooperation in this matter didn't help), we were left with paying the balance on the vehicle, which we subsequently had to roll into a Chrysler Sebring, basically doubling the cost of one vehicle. We don't know if anyone can help, but we keep hearing "tales" about some sort of class-action lawsuit that is going to be filed. We would like to add our names to this lawsuit. At first, I felt bad because the Chrysler mechanics made it sound like the vehicle had never been properly maintained and quite frankly, after seeing the motor I thought the same thing, too. Now that I read almost identical stories to ours, I'm not so sure. I do strongly feel we should be compensated somehow, some way.
Thank you,

I am running into people all over telling me to come to this site and report it. They all have had to replace their engines as well. I want to know why Daimler-Chrysler isn't handling their end of the bargain!!!! I've always thought the customer should be happy. Well, this customer definitely is not a happy camper! CAR FAILURE # 300 December 27, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I am among the many that have been taken advantage of by Chrysler. I was somewhat relieved to hear that this was a common problem but that does not make it any easier to deal with a large lawn ornament that I am making payments on still. I have a 200 dodge intrepid which I purchased new. It has less that 70,000 miles and the other day started to sound like a diesel. I took it the Shop were my father is employed, he has been an ASE certified Master Technician for over 35 years. We drove it to his house and he got a chance to look at it the other day. He also did some research on the internet and found what a common issue this is. I to now have a boat anchor/ lawn ornament. I have always kept up with routine oil changes and maintainance. This is not an owner fault problem it is an engine deffect problem and Chrysler needs to make it right. I will do my best to be sure that no one I know purchases a Chrysler product again!! I know that this is my last( I owned a Dodge caravan which I also purchased new before this vehicle)

I am attaching 2 letters that I sent to Chrysler regarding my 2000 Dodge Intrepid. This is a problem that has serious ramifications. I know 2 other families who allowed their Dodge Intrepid to be repossessed. This obviously has a negative affect on their credit score. Shame on Chrysler/Dodge for taking such an arrogant position on these vehicles. Add my complaint to the list of unhappy Chrysler customers. Additionally, I did not receive any response from my second letter!

I own a 99 Intrepid that is experiencing the same problems as so many others. Engine knocking, oil light comes on at idle. Car is covered by an
extended used car warranty. I took the car and they told me it was warn rod bearings. The extended service people covered it! Went to pick up car, same noise, same oil light problem. I took the car in again to a different dealer, I'm still waiting to see what the problem is. This was suppose to be the car that lasted a long time, hence the extended warranty, oil changes, etc. This car has led an easy life. Now I hope I can get it back with money left in my pocket, hopes are low. Fix the problems with this car, please.

CAR FAILURE # 296 December 23, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 1998 concord with a 2.7 engine and recently had the engine go out in it. I do not have this car paid for so it really puts me in a hard place. I do understand that these things happen but there is usually a pretty simply solution to them get a new motor or rebuild the one that went bad. (yeah right) after talking with many shops that specialize in rebuilding engines they all stated "we won't touch a 2.7 motor, there are too many complications with that engine" so I said OK my next step is to find a used one with low miles on it for a reasonable price. well need I say I found that these engines are worth their weight in gold. I now sit here with a decision to make, do I invest 6000 dollars into a car I owe 3000
on when it is only worth about 3000 dollars? or do I let the car set till I pay it off and then take it to the junk yard? After reading many postings and contacting Chrysler them selves it is evident to me Chrysler built a bad engine and now will not help the people who keep them in business. The funny part of the story is when my car broke down I was on my way to trade it in for a new Dodge truck. well will not be able to get that truck now because I can't afford the second car payment and Chrysler misses out on a new vehicle sold. In closing it is my advice that if you
own a Chrysler or dodge vehicle with a 2.7 motor and it runs, sell it now because I will quote the 2 dealers I spoke with " any car with that engine in it is a throw away car" I have never heard anyone ever say that about a car that is in perfect condition and well maintained. Chrysler You have a PROBLEM! Make your investors believe in you again.

Good morning! I am writing regarding my 2000 Dodge Intrepid which is sitting undrivable in a garage. I was driving home from work, on the interstate, when I heard a squeaking sound. After realizing it was MY car, it got louder and then I pulled over into the emergency lane. I turned the car off and then on again; then decided to try and make it home. The car felt very unsafe, almost as if it were going to lose control; I was only going about 35 - 40 m.p.h. I pulled over again and called a tow truck to tow the vehicle back to my house which is where it now sits.
If there is any further information I can provide, please let me know! Thank you very much.

CAR FAILURE # 294 December 23, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

I bought Dodge Intrepid 2001 SE 2.7 L from the local Auction with only 53000 miles on the odometer. As I was driving back from the auction, I heard tapping noise from the engine. I stopped and opened the hood and found that engine was low on the oil, I decide to add one quart of engine oil until I was close to the auto mechanic shop. After getting to his shop and opening up the engine we found that there was little oil but mostly sludge that prevented the engine from lubrication. The noise was really loud that had damaged some internal parts (broke crank shaft) too. Anyway the engine was gone, We decided to put another engine from the junk yard, which cost over two thousand dollars and installation was about one thousand . Now, I have only driven 1000 miles on the new engine and there is engine light on again. I hope it is not the beginning of same issue. The car has already coasted me almost seven thousand dollars and not to mention time in the shop and frustration. I want to warn every one to stay away from Intrepid and any 2.7 L Dodge engines. I hope company claims responsibility of poor design and issue a recall.

CAR FAILURE # 293 December 23, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2000 Chrysler Concord with approximately 109,000 miles. I have changed the oil and filter religiously every 3000 miles, using Fram filters and Pennzoil 10w30. Last week my wife called me and said her oil light came on and the motor started knocking. She said she checked the oil and there was plenty in the engine. I told her to crank the engine and drive it home slowly since we only lived 5 miles from where she was. I was thinking the oil pump may have gone out.- - When she started the engine she said the oil light went off and the motor quit knocking and didn't knock anymore all the way home. My son and I talked about it and we decided to take it for a drive to see if we could duplicate the sounds she had heard. We got about a mile from the house and the oil light came on and the engine started to knock. You could tell it was in the upper cylinders such as a lifter and not in the lower motor such as a rod knocking. - - My son, who is a mechanical maintenance manager for Duke Energy, talked me into taking the oil pan off to look at the lower part of the motor. When we got the pan off, I couldn't believe my eyes. There was so much sludge and build-up of gunk in my pan that I don't see how it was conitnuing to run. And not only that, there was metal shavings in the oil indicating the rod bearings were being eaten up too. We ended up pulling the valve covers off and the valves and everything was just caked in a tar looking substance and it was hard and dry. The 6 ports (3 on each side) that allow the oil to drain back into the pan were completely stopped up. The oil pump would pump the oil up but it was so stopped up it would take several minutes for it to drain back down. He and I are cleaning everything and I am planning to replace rod and main bearings. The oil screen was completely stopped up and was allowing just a minimal amount of oil to pass through. At first I cussed pennzoil and then I came across this web site. I just wanted you to know. - - I did save a pint jar of the gunk that came out of my oil pan. I wish you could see it.

CAR FAILURE # 292 December 23, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

My 2.7 engine in my 1999 Chrysler concorde failed last night on a major interstate in Atlanta, GA The oil was always changed at 3,000 miles or less with quality oil and filter. It has 90,000 miles on it. It appears based on the emails I have been reading that I was lucky enough to get 90,000 miles out of it.

CAR FAILURE # 291 December 23, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I purchased a 1999 Intrepid in May of 2004. In July the transmission failed and had to be replaced. On Dec.20 the engine failed while out of town. The dealer says it will cost over $6000 to replace. My warranty company says they will pay for a used engine but I will be responsible for the $1300 in labor charges for the job.I cannot afford either of these charges and the dealer who sold me the car will not even return my
phone calls. Now I'm without a car and it could likely cost me my job. What a wonderful Christmas.

CAR FAILURE # 290 December 22, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My 1999 Dodge Intrepid's engine seized up on me while I was driving in Tucson, Arizona on December 18th, 2004. On 22 December 2004, The Dodge dealership here in Sierra Vista quoted me $6300 for a new engine. I decided to do some research and have come across alot of dissatisfied owners of either Intrepids, Avengers or Concordes. I need help!!!!! What can I do?

CAR FAILURE # 289 December 22, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

This year's Christmas present - a new engine for my 2002 Dodge Intrepid, 42000 miles. There was no warning, except it started knocking, then
smoking, then dead. What choice does the average working person have ( who owes $9,000 on the car) have but to get it repaired? What average working person has an extra $6,000 + to buy themselves a new engine. Their is no quality, no pride, no sense of responsibility with this
company.

CAR FAILURE # 287 December 22, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a intrepid(1997), only has 63,000k on it. The same thing with me, a funny noise in the engine, took it in, of course sludge build up , due to lack of proper maintenance, so they said, which is not true. Also I need new bearings, struts and brakes, I cannot afford this, and think it is a crock of bull. don't know what to do- frustrated severly.....

I too have a 2000 intrepid which has 81000 miles. I just replaced the water pump as well as the timing chain tensioner. Then yesterday I was driving and was actually one of the fortunate ones--my oil light actually came on. I took it to the dealership and was told I had low oil pressure. Next I was not advised that they would check the oil pump for failure; or anything else for that matter. I was told since I had sooo many miles on my car I needed to replace the engine. I then asked when 80000 miles had become a lot of miles for a car. The service manager then explained it was because this was a very poor engine and that I was actually fortunate in being able to get 80000 miles out of it. I personally do not know of anyone who purchases a car for $18,000 and expects to only drive it for 60000 miles. This was the case for me--3.5 years ago I paid $18,000 for a 2000 intrepid with 20000 miles on it. I now own a car that is worthless to me and still owe $8500 on it.

December 14, 2004 Engine blew up. - Dodge Intrepid 1999 89000 miles my husband finance just 5months ago. Still owe on this car.. I am amazed that this has happened to several other consumers with the same problem. Oil change just performed on 12/5 and 2:21pm. I was driving it every day when suddenly I heard a Faint Knocking coming from the Motor The Check Engine light came on and the car Just Stopped in traffic. I had one lane of traffice blocked even with my hazard lights on I could have been easily rear ended. Thank God my daughter was not driving this vehicle. I had to start the car with the knocking engine and back up when there was no traffic to pull car in the a Walgreen's parking lot. After waiting to be picked and and leaving the car to be towed to a car repair shop I was told it might be the lifters but after of course researching on this car the mechanic decided it had to be the engine. Can someone please inform me of class action lawsuit.

CAR FAILURE # 284 December 20, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My son was recently divorced and needed a car. We looked at several used car lots. We went to a chrysler dealership who had a 1998 Dodge Intrepid with 70,000 miles on it. We ended up purchasing the car for $6000.00. Two months later my son went on a trip from Illinois to Ohio, I had just changed the oil with 73,000 miled on the odometer, when the engine started knocking so he pulled off the interstate and called me to let inform me what was happening. We had the car towed back and had it looked at by a mechanic who diagnosed it with a spun rod or main bearing. The motor still ran but it was knocking violently. I have purchased a used engine for $1200.00 dollars and paid the mechanic $500.00 to install it. When he got the engine in and started it the motor was making a loud clanging noise in which he indicated the timing chain was slapping against the inside of the motor. At this point he shut it off and tried to restart it but it just kept backfiring and would not start. I contacted the salvage yard who sold me the engine who stated he would refund my money but he would not compensate me for the mechanics charges to install the engine. He indicated he would sell me another 2.7 with 43,000 miles on it but I would have to pay an additional $500 dollars in which I did. It is being delivered as I write this so I hope It is not another defective engine. I to have contacted Chrysler but all I got was nowhere. I am definitely interested in a class action lawsuit someone needs to organize it. I am willing to do my part. My opinion is that Chrysler is not going to do anything about this until it is brought to court and the NHTSA gets involved. They should be forced to recall or compensate us some how.

CAR FAILURE # 283 December 20, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Engine Failure - 2001 Dodge Intrepid - December 17, 2004 whiles driving to work I started hearing a clicking sound and the oil light started going off and on, but only when I stopped and started. I immediately drove my car to a repair shop, left and waited for the news. Much to my surprise, I was told that there was no oil in my car, my engine was blown and I needed a new motor. This vehicle has been serviced regularly and well maintained and to look at it, you would think it was a fine car. This is not something that you expect when you know that you have taken good care of a car. I am a single mother with three children, it's a week before Christmas and I still owe $1,700.00 on this car. Now I have no trade in and still owe for a car that can't be driven....... Merry Christmas to you too Chrysler!!!

CAR FAILURE # 281 December 18, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

I thought I was alone with my bad experience, till My Son found this Site. We now have a decorative 1999 Chrysler concord in my front yard, that has @80000 miles and an engine that needs overhaul. it started acting up before the engine went bad by stopping on the highway and not starting, the mechanic changed a computer chip on the gas tank. then shortly after that we had problems with the transmission, shortly after that the engine went out without any further warning. now I have to keep paying the bank for a worthless car, to replace the engine I have to come up
with $5000. Now I became angry after I read the bad experience that all of us had, and that Chrysler is not stepping up to the plate.  This is not fair.  I will spread the word that Chrysler is dishonest and a worthless company and everyone should know about them.

CAR FAILURE # 279 December 17, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
With no warning we were driving along and heard a clapping sound like a baseball card in the spokes of a bike. No warning lights, just an engine that has died as we pulled it into a Chrysler dealership ironically to pick up my Dodge Ram that needed servicing also. They say the water pump went and then the timing chain slipped which warped the valves. Close to $7000 to fix it or I should say to replace the engine. They did offer me $1000 off of the total bill. I think it should be my share is only $1000 if you asked me. Only 87,500 miles on this car and it was serviced regularly for the 5 years I owned it. What a slap in the face. Can you steer me where I can get in on this class action lawsuit I am hearing about?
Sincerely,
Gary W.

I own a 2001 Dodge Intrepid and recently had to replace the engine due to timing chain failure. Due to this I was left stranded along the highway and had to have vehicle towed to a repair facility and have the engine replaced at a cost of $6228.01. Vehicle only had 51,714 miles. 2.7 liter engine/24 valve/alum block. Please include me in any class action suit filed on my behalf.

CAR FAILURE # 276 December 17, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I also own a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with the notorious 2.7 almost blown engine, due to oil sludge. The was well maintained with regular
oil changes. The car has only 76k miles. For a couple of months the car would sound like a diesel for a very short time and disappear. I called
the dealer and inquired if there had been any similar complaints or problems. They replied they knew of none. I even had the car in another
repair shop one day and they did not know what could have caused the sound I complained about, because it disappeared before I got there.
Just a couple of weeks ago the sound reappeared suddenly after 4 months of nothing. The shop owner could not believe his ears when I drove up left the car running and went in to get him. He found that the Hydraulic tensioner that holds the timing chains in place needed replaced, but
when he took the front cover off the motor he found it filled with sludge. I was lucky that the motor had not blown yet, but I face the
expense of having it rebuilt or replaced. I still have the car, but I had to go replace it with another car. This was an added expense I was
not planning on.

I to have the dreaded blown 2.7 liter engine. I was just curious to see how many people have tried to get there local news channels or news papers to do a story about this issue. Has anyone emailed 60 minutes, 20/20 or any other news show about this problem. I currently have a reporter from our local newspaper trying to get this story out. I was wondering if anyone else was going to the same extreme measures I am.  I think we should all act together and get one of these big news channels to do a story about how DaimlerChrysler is handling this issue. It also appears that the 2.7 engine isn't the only engnie that Dodge makes that sludges up. I have read through a recent article that the Center for Auto Safety is planning to expand its request for a recall on the 4.7liter engine. I guess those consumers forgot to change there oil to!

I brought my 2000 dodge intrepid in 2001, loved that car until one day the oil light came on, went off, back and forth finally the light came
on and stayed on, and the car Stopped running. After putting about 1,200 into this car I was told it would cost 3,600 to replace my
engine. THIS IS HORRIBLE CAR 4 OF MY FAMILY MEMBERS HAD ONE ALSO SAME THING HAPPEN THIS IS A DISGRACE....

I bought a 2004 Intrepid in February and it currently has 37,000 miles on it. I was driving down the freeway and started hearing a tapping noise at high RPM's, so I backed off and was awaiting the next exit. Unfortunately, I didn't make it to the exit and had my vehicle towed to the Dodge Dealership and they informed me I needed a new engine because of lack of oil in my vehicle, even though I have my oil changed on the recommended basis. Dodge doesn't want to take responsibility for the car and I owe $14,800 on it.

CAR FAILURE # 270 December 14, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought a used 1999 Intrepid VIN #................. in 2002 with 80,000+ miles, less than one year later I had to have my engine overhauled for
$4300. The Dodge dealership quoted me $9000 for a new engine and didn't utter a word about their defective engines. Now a little more than one year later and less than 13,000 miles, I started having some problems and was searching the internet when I came across this site and read "The primary symptom is that the car heater, for no reason, does not blow hot air - then it starts working. If this has been happening it is likely that your car engine has been overheating and causing sludge to build up in the top half of the engine. Ultimately your engine will fail with very little warning. Some symptoms are car starts to burn oil ..." This is exactly the sympton it's having and some radiator problem which I imagine is from the car overheating, although my gages have not shown in rise in temperature, but I do seem to have lost or burned up my oil. I'm still paying off the loan that I took to have the engine replaced the first time. If I'd only known then what I know now...

CAR FAILURE # 269 December 14, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My Chrysler Concorde's 2.7 engine failed last week while the dealer's salesman was driving it in for service. The Chrysler dealer said that it would cost $6,500 to replace the engine or $5,500 to put in a reconstructed engine. However, the Blue Book value of the car if in good condition is only about $6100 wholesale and $8,000 retail. Chrysler so far has been unwilling to step up and stand behind their defective product. It was not our fault that it failed. I was planning to drive the car at least 2 more years. I figure I lost at least $6,000 on this deal if they won't do anything about it. I probably will have to sell the vehicle for scrap if nothing else can be done. What do you suggest? HELP!

I have had my 98 Intrepid for only two months and the engine is shot. I took it to the repair shop and they told me it needs a new engine. I still owe 2,870 on the car but the cheapest I can find the engine for is 3,500 and I know that even if I get one(by taking the money from the money tree that I have growing in my back yard) I will just have to get another engine down the road because it will just keep happening.

I am writing because my 2000 Dodge Intrepid with the 2.7L engine just failed on me, out of the blue, without any warning or signs that this might happen. I change my oil regularly at approximately the 3,000 mile intervals, and for the engine to just seize like that forces me to think that this can't be normal. I have been doing some research, and found your web address, and am emailing you to report this. I called Chrysler and they started a case file for me, so that a possible recall could be announced on this problem, but I feel I'm in limbo here. I dont have a car to drive, and can't afford the $4,000.00 plus to fix/replace my engine. Hopefully your group can get things moving here on this situation.
Thanks,

CAR FAILURE # 265 December 13, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2000 Chrysler Concorde with a 2.7 liter v6. I have 63,325 miles on the car. I have always kept up on my maintenance performing oil changes every 3,000 miles. This past Saturday the 11th of December while I was on my way to the grocery store my engine Quit on me. The oil I had in the engine did not even have a hundred miles on it yet I Had changed it the previous Monday that is when I noticed the build up of the sludge on the dip stick and on the fill cap. I don't believe there is a good day to have your cars engine let go on you but with just a couple weeks before Christmas it makes it even more unbearable. If there are any resources that you can let me know of to try and resolve this through Chrysler I would greatly appreciate it

CAR FAILURE # 264 December 12, 2004 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My Intrepid experienced some sort of engine problem on 12/11/04 while driving. The oil light started to flicker after about an hour on the road. My wife was driving while I was at home. She pulled over and a passanger checked the oil level and it was at max. I just had the oil changed this past November so I knew this was not the problem. I told her to continue and about and hour later she called back and infomred me that the engine was making a very loud noise. She pulled the car over again and the engine stopped. She was able to restart the engine but the noise was still there. The car was tolled to a local Dodge dealer and I will be caling them Monday 12/13/04 to look a the engine. I travled two and a half hours to pike her up and the noise is coming from the left side valve cover area. I feart that it has dropped a valve and maybe worse. I have owned this car since July 2003 (purchased used). The dealer made to comments about the 2.7 being a problem. A friend of mine noticed that we had purchased this car and warned us, but I ignored him. I owned a Caravan before this and it looks like my Chrysler days are over.

We purchased a 99 Dodge Intrepid 2 years ago, and have the exact same issue with the 2.7 liter engine. We've changed our oil religiously...and when we took our car in to our mechanic for a tune up, he discovered the sludge problem. He told us the only 2 options we have are to replace the engine, or run the car into the ground. We owe thousands on this car, are warranty has expired, and we are just sick about the whole thing. Is there a class action suit going on with this? We need any and all help!!!

Chrysler took the trash out, and I bought it. I own (Bank Owns, I Pay) for a 2001 Chrysler Sebring VIN# ............. with the now famous 2.7L V6. Short version is as follows. Oil sludge evidently caused by changing the oil at half of the recommended mileage that Chrysler specs in the manual, caused premature engine failure. After towing the car to the dealership to have a consistent engine rattle diagnosed, the mechanic said the engine is trashed. An hour later the same mechanic called me back and said that the engine was fine. The mechanic said that the engine uses a hydraulic tensioner for the timing chain, and the oil pressure has to build up before the rattle will quit. He said these engines will do that after they sit for several days without starting. (It was running quietly 4 hours earlier when I shut it off.) I drove it until it did it again, but his time it could not come back to life. Chrysler owes us big time. They have to know, we have been telling them.

Troy

I was driving in a mall parking lot when the engine went. Luckily there was no other cars in the area. I had to get out and push the car to a safe spot and leave it there to be towed. If this happened on a highway while I was driving faster, I shudder at what could have happened. My 2 small children and my wife were in the car with when these happened.

Wow, nice to see my experience is not just me... I bought a brand new (40+ miles) Sebring Limited 4D in May 2004. Excited and proud, till I got to the busiest intersection on the way home from the dealer and the engine died in the middle of it, ON THE DAY I BOUGHT IT!!! It has now been 5 repeats since then, the LEMON LAWYER has the case and the car has been parked at the dealer since the last time it happened. The dealer said they wanted to put a "Shadow Device" on the car and have me drive it and when it happened again, they would know... I said well, if you feel that to be the case, Then YOU Drive It! Of coarse they denied and as far as I know the car has not been driven since. Oh yeah, Im on permanent physical disability and have no way to get around since that happened and my kid was in the car the last time the engine died. Whats another old, crippled fat man death, no big deal, but you Screwed with my kid Chrysler

I am fighting it out with the dealership right now. My engine just died last week and they are saying it’s due to sludge buildup/lack of maintenance on the car. My VIN number is : .............. This is for a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. I have only owned the car one year and for all intents and purposes, have only driven it for 6 months. I went out of work on disability in April 2004 and have barely driven the car since then.

CAR FAILURE # 256 December 09, 2004 - seat failure
In October of 2004 my two sons were driving a 2004 Dodge Stratus 4dr, when they struck head on with a school bus. Both vehicles moveing at 55 mph, and neither hit the brakes. My 6 year old sitting in the back driver side, slammed into his 17 year old brother that was driving. Had the back seat anchors, and belt assembly not gave way. Things may had been a little different. I have attached the photos. I have noticed that Dodge later had a recall in November. A little late don't you think. Dodge has had the same issues addressing this same type of failure in early years. Look at these pictures You will see the broken piece that was off of the rear seat the metal part is the ancor and bracket. It attaches to the metal plate on the back of the seat. Those two plates separated. Look at the back view of the front seat. You will see those same brackets assembled for the front seat as well. Now look at that front seat again. Just imagine what it was like hitting that seat for my little boy. Now imagine, what it was like for my 17 year old boy when his little brother slammed into him.

I have been having a lot of problems with this car in the past 3 months. It has been stalling and there is a terrible knocking in the engine. I was told just this morning that these cars are known for this. I was never aware of this. I was also told I have about two wee
