CAR FAILURE # 599 March 18, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I was investigating problems with these engines when I came across your website. I would like to get any information you have regarding contacts and or class action lawsuits regarding these vehicles. We are the original owners of a 2000 Chrysler Concord. Approximately two weeks ago my husband was driving to work and the car died without any prior warning. We called our mechanic, he went out to look at it and suggested that we have it towed to a local Chrysler dealership. Upon delivery to Chrysler I received a phone call notifying me that the engine needed to be replaced. The estimate for the repair was $6,900.00. I have one car payment left and I am not in a financial situation to come up with that sum of money. The dealership offered us $1500 for a trade in value for salvage. This car has been maintained on a regular basis. We had a 6 year 50,000 mile extended warranty. The car will be five years old next month and we have 58,000 miles on the car. Knowing that I could not afford a $6,900 repair, I had the car towed to a local engine specialist. He gave me an estimate of $4,000 for the repairs. We need this car to go to work. I authorized the repairs and I applied for a loan to cover the expenses. I also had to borrow a vehicle from a family member while the repairs were being done. My husband missed two days of work while we tried to figure out a solution to this problem. After viewing numerous web sites in reference to this problem and the fact that Chrysler denies the problem even exists, I feel that something needs to be done. I have read hundreds of similar complaints (and there are thousands) from loyal customers. Chrysler needs to do something to compensate these customers for the damages. To date I have reported this situation to the:
1) U S National Highway Traffic and Safety Institute on 3/18/2005 at 1-800-424-9393
2) I called Chrysler at 1-800-992-1997 to record a case file.
3) I left a message for H R Porterfield at Chrysler Special Investigations 248-944-7134
Please let me know if anyone takes this problem seriously.

CAR FAILURE # 598 March 18, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
2000 Intrepid engine failure. No warning at all. Car was performing great and I took very good care of it. I am approaching retirement and was hoping to keep this car for quite a while. I don't travel a lot. I love the car, but now after researching Chrysler's attitude and treatment of this paticular problem, I'll probably buy another make. Please add my name to any list that will help in getting help.

CAR FAILURE # 597 March 18, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2001 Chrysler Sebring with 52000 miles. On march 10 I started my car and heard a tapping noise. I drove less than ten miles and had to have it towed to Chrysler. This car has a five year lease. It had a three year warranty that year(2001). I still owe a year on the lease. Chrysler quoted me 5900 to install a remanufactured engine. There is no engine available from Chrysler. It is going to cost me almost $9000 to finish out my lease. Service dept. was very disrespectful telling me it was not maintained properly. I made regular oil changes. Tried to call Chrysler headquarters and there is a twenty plus minute wait on phone. I'll never buy another Chrysler. john

CAR FAILURE # 595 March 17, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought a car for my daughter a 1998 dodge intrepid. I purchased an extended warranty as it was a used car. I bought it in 2003 with 57,000 miles on it. It was maintained with regular oil changes (documentation available). 18 months later after numerous trips to get it looked at it died while driving it out of a parking lot. The warranty company will not pay for it as it was a result of sludge in the engine. It has 94,000 miles on it and the warranty is supposed to be good until 100,000 miles. This car started messing up at about 80,000 miles. I am now out of a car, still owe $6000 and the Dodge dealership will replace the engine for $8000!!!! This is not our fault that this engine failed.

CAR FAILURE # 594 March 17, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I had three rods blow in my 2001 Chrysler Sebring 4dr sedan. 2.7l 24 valve 6 cyl. Car has 52000 miles oil always changed every 3000-5000 miles. Car is leased for 5 years. This left me with a year to pay on lease and a quote from chrysler for nearly 6000 to pay for engine replacement.Chrysler cant provide a replacement engine.

CAR FAILURE # 593 March 17, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Bought a 1998 Intrepid from a dealer with 4,000 miles. We have had regular oil changes during the entire history of the car. During the past 2 years, everything from the front to the back of the car has gone T.U.. The front hubs has leaked and been replaced, transmission seals (3) has been replaced, belts replaced, transmission sensor replaced twice in 3 years. Electric window motors have gone out, A.C. sensors have had to be replaced twice, horn shorted out and numerous other problems. The past year, the car has been emitting blue smoke from the exhaust. Nobody could seem to fine the problem until 6 months age, the PVC valve hose was saturated with oil, they cleaned it out and replaced with a "updated system", which seems to continue to emit blue smoke. Took it again and they fixed it by cleaning the system out
again. The service man and the tech said I should sell the car and the paperwork said, "This will continue till new design is out." We have put 98,000 miles on our car, lucky us, and enjoyed our use, but Dodge sucks and we won't have another car built by them either. I too, like so many others will pass your sight onto others owning Intrepids or anything with a 2.7 in it.

CAR FAILURE # 592 March 17, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My 2000 Chrysler Concord has thrown a rod bearing due to the sludge build up problem. It has only 60,000 mi. on it. We have been told that a REBUILT engine will cost us $5,300. We bought it with 5,000 mi. on it. A car history search shows that it was manufactured in Canada and has not been wrecked. When we first got it, the heater did not work. We took it to Chrysler to fix and were told that somehow the onboard computer did not have the "codes" it needed to control the heater. That fix was still under warranty. Next, at about 35,000 mi., after the warranty ran out, the car's transmission had difficulty and required a $250.00 fix. Our own mechanic did that one and told us that a sensor on the transmission had gone out. The next problem was the sludge problem. We took the car to Jiffy Lube (not our first trip) and they found an oil line that had split and allowed oil to spill out over the engine. Jiffy Lube put a tempory hose in place and we immediately had the hose replaced at Chrysler - $60.00. We bought the car used so have not contacted Chrysler. I called our used car dealer about taking it back, fixing it, and seeing what he could get out of it.

CAR FAILURE # 591 March 17, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 1999 Intrepid that just turned 90,000 miles two and a half weeks ago. About a week ago I had a problem (car stopped). when the repair shop got the car started, I heard a faint knock. I asked the repair shop to take a look. They said they believed a piston rod connector had broken. They advised me to replace the engine (a 2.7L V-6) at a const to me of $3,800 for a used engine, $ 4,500 if the got a new short block or $ 5,000 for a new long block. I took the car to another mechanic to get a second opinion. He examined the car and gave me a similar diagnosis. Although his prices were slightly lower, it's still expensive.

CAR FAILURE # 590 March 16, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I am in Edmonton, Canada and the 2.7L engine seized up right after I had a curb accident. But the Chrysler mechanics said the oil had "never been changed" and now it's been sitting in my driveway for 3 months and I continue to make payments on a car I cannot drive nor afford to fix. BTW, EVERY autowrecker you contact KNOWS of this problem.  They will all tell you that a running 2.7L is a HOT commodity! (meaning, there's alot of blown ones out there!)

CAR FAILURE # 589 March 16, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2000 Concorde that has 81,000 miles on it. My problem is that it is using a lot of oil, about 3 qts. a month. Do I get rid of it before I have more trouble or is there something that can be done. When I bought the car at 19,000 I started using synthetic oil. I do get a puff of smoke on acceleration, but does not smoke while running. Do you have any help to offer me?

CAR FAILURE # 588 March 16, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
What began as a love for a very nice "road car" has turned into a nightmare about to happen! Our 1999 Concorde with 110,000 miles has had the usual Chrysler problems with stab links and A/C evaporator. In addition we have replaced one power window motor and 3 electric door locks. And recently, even though we have changed oil at 3,000 mile intervals the engine began to burn larg quantities of oil, a quart in less than 500 miles! But after reading some stories I guess I am luckier than those who believed they drove "normal service" vs "severe service". But still modern engines are not this shodily built that this should happen. We believed that as with any good, modern, well mantained car that 250,000 miles plus was possible, but evidently not with the 2.7L. After haggling with our local dealer, where our family has purchased 8, vehicles since 1987 we gave up and traded it off even though we still owed money. This is a real financial burden, with a daughter still in college. The dealer denied that this was a bad engine and acted as if they did not believe we changed oil every 3,000 miles.

My car engine in my 2001 intrepid caught on fire while I was driving. I put it out with a coke I had in my car. i had my car taken to the dealership in December for oil light coming on. after 1800.00 in repairs . the car still blew the engine in February. I still owe 10000. on this lemon.

CAR FAILURE # 584 March 16, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
The engine in my 1999 Dodge Intrepid died last week (the same day I paid my very last car payment to Chrysler/Daimler). It has 95,000 miles on it. The oil light began coming on intermittently in October of 2003 when I only had approximately 75,000 miles on it. We had it check several times and had the oil changed religiously every 3000 miles but no mechanic could find anything wrong with the car. I wish I had found your website when all of this first started. I even had the oil changes done at Spitzer Dodge in Columbus, OH and they never mentioned any type of problem with the engines when I specifically asked them if they had seen any oil light problems before. What can I do to help other victims of 2.7 engine failures get Chrysler to make a recall? Let me know. I am furious.

I just lost my 2001 Sebring conv. 2.7 liter this am.....now what do I do? I have found another 2.7 liter from a 2004 for $2350, however, Jasper engines are redesigning from a long list of faults but the refurbished engines from Jasper are $4550. No oil indicator problems because the sludge/tar fools the sensors. So what am I to do?

CAR FAILURE # 581 March 15, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Yes I want to add my name to the growing list of unhappy Chrysler product owners. I owned a 1997 Dodge Intrepid, started hearing a noise, took it to the dealer, explained the problem, paid them a little over $1100.00 to fix it. Upon driving the car home I heard the same noise, took the car back and told them the car was doing the same thing. They took it back in the shop to check it out, and came back to inform me the transmission was going out on it. Can't remember what price they quoted me to get it repaired but it was more than I could afford, so I ended up trading it off for a 2001 Dodge Intrepid V-6, automatic, 2.7 liter engine. I've had the car for about 3 years and so far I've had to re-do the brakes twice, replace the transmission cable, and now the engine is knocking. I also am still making payments on the car, my job up and left to Mexico, just finished school looking for a job and now I'm left afoot and jobless. Chrysler, if they are genuine and value the customer ought to do the right thing, and quit selling lemons.
Thanks - Anselmo A. - Oklahoma

CAR FAILURE # 579 March 15, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I'm sitting here reading all of these emails about the 2.7L engine in the Chrysler/Dodge and I am amazed. These stories sound just like mine. I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid and was driving home one night about 11:00pm, engine light started blinking, it started knocking and just died. I owe more than the car is "worth" and have been without a car for almost 4 months. There were absolutely no other warnings. Chrysler needs to step up to the plate and take responsibility for this engine. On 3 different occasions of having my oil changed, the mechanic mentioned there was a lot of "sludge" in the engine. Chrysler may think they will loose too much money doing a recall, but the way I see it, they will lose a lot more as time goes by when they can't sell their cars! This has been a very frustrating and stressful problem.

CAR FAILURE # 578 March 15, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge On the brink of Engine Failure
I have a 2002 Dodge Intrepid. Model SE with the 2.7 L Engine and 24 valves. Over the past week I have had the engine light come one. The first time was over 4 months ago. It cost me $150 for an emissions valve. My car had about 37k on it. Then, last Friday another valve or Evaporator Pump 3.0 General, gave out and it cost me $350. That Saturday my wife filled up the car and the gas gauge would not register full. Two days later I took the car to the Dealership and they told me the Fuel Sending Unit is bad and that's another $370. Is this a scam or what? I haven't resolved this matter yet because I haven't contacted Chrysler yet.
Mr. Smith

CAR FAILURE # 577 March 15, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I also own a 1999 Chrysler Concorde with a 2.7 liter. This is my wife's car with only 49,000 mile and maintained methodically. Last week the check engine light came on and motor began to knock. Took to dealer for evaluation, guess what? Bad crank sensor and or cam sensor and knocking rods. Dealer says repairs cost more than vehicle is worth. Priced used motor at $2,000 with 40,000 miles. His statement was failure probably due to sludge. Cost for evaluation $86.00. Extended warrantee ran out 2003. If this is an inherent weakness with this engine can we not do something. Any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.
Thanks for a place to release,
Larry and Debbi K.

CAR FAILURE # 576 March 15, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a dodge Intrepid 2002, I've bought it in 2002 with a 3 year warranty haven't had any problems until now in December 2004 and the last week in that year we drove all over town came home parked the car and since then haven't driven it took it to Firestone they checked it out called me back said that I had internal damage to my engine due to quart short of oil and I would need a new engine. Had it towed home, let the local mechanic look at it, he said that I was short a quart of oil and that shouldn't have had to have a new engine, more
out of pocket expenses, Took it to the Regent Dodge out on Gallatin Road. that thoroughly checked it out and even broke down the engine to see what was going on inside they said it was a lack of oil and internal damage to cylinder block and engine. service said needs engine would cost estimate given was $6500.00 for a new engine for that price I could my a new car. Since this happen I've had to bum rides from friends and family, or catch the city bus as my modes of transportation. also they had a recall on the dodge Intrepid for bolts needing to be repaired connected with front seats, if the bolts came a lose while you were driving you could have a major accident.

In October of 2004 I was driving West bound on a local street in Philadelphia, I was making a left turn into the South bound lane when my steering wheel locked and I could not move it. Before I knew it I was in the North bound lanes. I had to come to a complete stop before I could bring the steering wheel back to normal. Fortunatley there was no oncoming traffic for if there was I definitely been involved in an accident. My car has a total of 37000 miles on it, and as usual with Chrysler, my warranty had run out. Right now my car sits in my driveway, and being retired, it will sit there until I can afford to have it fixed or they recall this mechanical failure too. I have looked on line and have seen other owners that have had the same problem. I did notify my dealer, but since my 5 year warranty has run out there is nothing they can do. My feeling is that had this been a highway or had I been going any faster, or had another vehicle been coming North someone could have been injured. I have been a Philadelphia Police Officer for 35 years and have never encountered a problem like this.
Thank you - Jim Hauck

CAR FAILURE # 574 March 15, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Our 2000 Dodge Intrepid died on Sunday, March 12, 2005. It had just over 110,000 miles on it. We are told by the auto repair place that the engine is shot. In talking to them, along with our local Chrysler Dealership, the 2.7 liter engine in these vehicles are terrible. We had never heard that before. So needless to say, we were quite upset. When we bought this car, we were hoping to get at least 180,000 miles or more, as that's what we got on our 1994 Intrepid. In fact, because we loved our 1994 so much, that's what provoked us to by another one. We had just paid of the 2000 Intrepid in early November 2004. It was so nice to not have a car payment for the first time in over 31 years. Now we find ourselves having to purchase a new vehicle a lot sooner that we ever anticipated. Needless to say, this is putting a crunch on our family budget. We have always been avid Chrysler customers. And we'll probably still buy
another Chrysler product. In fact, we are looking at purchasing either a 2002 Stratus or a 2003 Caravan. But if we have problems with either of these vehicles, I can almost guarantee we will think long and hard before purchasing another Chrysler product.
Sincerely,
Danette S. - Pinckney, MI

I bought a 2001 Dodge Intrepid brand new and I change The oil every 2,500 miles myself. When I got up to go to work my car had a ticking sound when i check the Oil it was a quart low at which I replaced. On the way Home from work it started ticking louder and all of a sudden it just shut down with 62,000 miles, it cost me $4,800 to replace the engine and Chrysler is blaming this problem on the consumer.  I maintain my oil regularly. I am very upset and something should be done to Reimburse me, I think this problem is a malfunction in the dodge Chrysler/Dodge engine.

CAR FAILURE # 572 March 15, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. We were told that it was a tooth out of time. We took this car to our local Chrysler/ Dodge dealership and all they could say was they had no idea what was wrong with the car. However they managed to drive the car 125 miles before running the car out of gas. We un-edwcated people paid them 250.00 for nuthin. Now it will not run at all. We had no idea when we bought this car that the 2.7 was such a lemon. Now we are trying to make lemonaide out of this car. It looks like our best option is to insert a 2.3 pinto motor in it because it seems to have the best reliability. The 2.3 will probably outlast about 30 2.7 motors.Tell Chrysler/ Dodge to have a good day yont 2.

1999 Concorde (bought used in August of 2001) is about to blow it's engine. I have been told that within the next $6000 for a new motor , The car has 91,000 miles on it and is otherwise in great condition. I had planned to get at least a few more years out of this car. Now I learn that this is typical of the 2.7 L engine. How do I get on a class action list against Chrysler? Lets stand together !!!

Unbelievable. I had a 1999 Intrepid with the 2.7 liter engine. A crankshaft sensor went out. Had that replaced. Engine started acting up again, so I took it to the Goodyear repai shop close by. They found
the same sludge. Manager called me at work and told me to "dump the car because he found pieces (not bits) of metal in the oil and filter, said'd be lucky if it lasted another 500 miles. I thanked him and traded it
the next day.

CAR FAILURE # 568 March 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 2000 dodge intrepid with the 2.7l engine. At about 70000 miles my engine started to run rough and I took it to a mechanic to have it looked at, he told me that I needed a valve job and the cost would be about $1,200, so I went for a second opinion. The next mechanic looked at it and knew by the make, model and engine what was wrong immediately. He wouldn't even work on it and suggested replacing with a remanufactures engine since the problem was solved in the reman engines. Chrysler told me that I should take better care of my vehicle, so a long story short, NECO engines in Albany NY is replacing my engine for a grand total of $5,600. I will never buy another Chrysler product again, this is preety bad coming from the son of a 27 year Chrysler Employee.

CAR FAILURE # 567 March 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought a 1999 Dodge Intrepid used in October 2004 with 74570 miles. I don't drive much but in February 2005 the oil light started coming on when I came to a stop not any other time. The Dodge dealership said it would take about $450.00 to try and correct the problem but they would make no promises. I called another repair shop and they told me about the bad engines in that car. The 2.7 V 6. I was told to try to trade it if I could because it was not safe to drive as the engine could go at any time. I called the Dodge dealership back and was told they did not have any problems with the Intrepid's that anyone could get 1 or 2 bad engines. I don't know what I am going to do about this yet but wanted to pass my story on.

CAR FAILURE # 566 March 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2001 dodge intrepid that has 82,000 miles on it. I did not have any problems with the car for 11 months. Then one day i was on the highway and my oil light kept going on and off. Then I passed someone going about 70mph and after I made the pass my car died. It started making a horrible noise. I had it towed and figured out my engine was blown. I still owe $3,000 on the car and it will cost $4,000++ to fix. I would like to know if anybody has an idea on what I should do.

CAR FAILURE # 565 March 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Unfortunately I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid whit the famous (infamous) 2.7 liter engine. When I bought it, I had no idea of the amount of grief that I was in for. At around 70,000 miles the engine blew. I had it replaced to the tune of $7,000 dollars. My thinking was ok at least I will have a new engine that should last me for a while. I thought that it would be better than incurring a new a possible car note for a replacement for the Dodge. I should have gone for the new and possible higher car payment. So now here it is with about 40,000 miles on my new engine, the car is using oil like a moped and more smoke than normal is coming out of the tail pipe. I'm told that I may need a ring job. So much for the new engine new car theory. I have had electrical problems, door latches breaking, power door locks go out. The really sad thing about this is the way that Chrysler handles things. First of all, the Chrysler seem to have this too bad so sad attitude when it comes to addressing what is clearly a faulty product. Second, it seems that the local dealers never have any repair parts in stock. Third, the Dodge mechanics that I have dealt with seem to be totally inept at repairing their own product. Honestly I have had much better reliability from my Ford than I have had with this Dodge. This has been my first Dodge, and it surly will be my last!!! I advise everybody that ask be about buying a car to stay away from Chrysler products. My opinion is that they look slick, but they are a piece of garbage!!!

CAR FAILURE # 564 March 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I purchased a 2000 Concorde new in December 2000. The car ran perfectly until February 14, 2005 when, at 98,000, it began to knock and the oil light illuminated. Diagnostic testing revealed the typical catastrophic engine failure so commonly occurring on the 2.7 ltr. engine. Our solution, either put $7,900 into a new engine for a car with 98,000 miles or use the same $$ as a down payment on a new vehicle. We took the latter route and traded the vehicle in. Fortunately we have the ability to trade the vehicle, however we are still out the down payment for the new automobile. Oddly enough, this past weekend I received a letter from United Warranty Solutions, offering to sell me an extended warranty for the Concorde. This notice seemed quite suspicious as it alluded to the fact that buying this warranty would save me potentially thousands of dollars in repair bills. It is appalling to see the many engine failures and pleas for assistance go unanswered.
Thank you,
Larry

CAR FAILURE # 563 March 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Greetings to all, I only recently stumbled across dontbuyone.org, unfortunately, it was too late. Last October I bought a 2001 Chrysler Sebring Sedan with the 2.7 engine, it had 90,000 miles on it. After 4 payments on the $6900 car, while driving on March 11th the engine began to skip and miss in traffic on I-70 in Maryland. Coasting off the interstate to a garage, they proceeded to determine that the cam sensor had gone bad. They replaced the sensor and cleared the codes out of the computer, at a cost of $300.00. The mechanic took the car around the block, declared it good, and away I went. I got maybe 4 miles from the garage before the engine began to tap and knock. I was back on I-70 in heavy traffic when the tapping
got worse and worse untill the oil light finally came on and the car stalled. I was very lucky to get the car onto the shoulder without getting run over by a semi. I called the garage back, and at a cost of another $75 bucks they towed it back only to discover that the engine had spun a bearing. The oil cap was totally covered underneath with slime, it was the worst I have ever seen on any car. Now I have to figure out what to do with the car as we have only had it for 4 months and only driven it for 10,000 miles. Car had 100128 miles on it when the engine quit. I cant afford to swap another engine into this car at a cost of 4-5 thousand dollars when I only paid 6900 for the car originally. What a rip off.

CAR FAILURE # 562 March 13, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Hello! I have a 1998 Dodge Intrepid with a 2.7 engine that is blown sitting useless in my driveway. I called around to all my local parts stores and junk yards looking for a replacement engine to no avail. I was told time after time that the 2.7 is hard to find because so many need replaced. Is Dodge Chrysler doing anything to help all of us who are stuck with these lemon engines? I absolutely loved my Intrepid while it ran and was heartbroken when the motor quit. I am a single grandmother supporting 3 grandchildren and cannot afford the $2200 per engine quotes I received on the few motors I could find, let alone the cost of labor putting a new motor in. I even see them for sale on Ebay--needs a new engine, car doesn't run, engine needs repaired......is there something we can do? Thanks for letting me vent.

I am sending you this email on behalf of Michael Johnson. He has purchased a 2004 Dodge Intrepid and before 2 months after purchasing the Interpid, the engine failed. He contacted Dodge and they revoked his warranty saying that he did not change the oil and that it is his fault. He should not have had to change the oil in less than 2 months after purchasing the car. It has been 10 months since this has happened. He has not been able to get assistance from Dodge or his finance company.
Thank you,
Natalie

On February 3, 2005 my wife bought a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. She had the car only 2 weeks & drove only 700 miles and the engine went. We had it towed to the nearest mechanic where they were asking $6,100 for a new engine and repair with no warranty. The car has been sitting on their lot for the past couple of weeks as we do not know what to do with it. We paid $5,000 for a car we only had 2 weeks.

A month after my extended warranty expired, my transmission went out($3400.00).A month after that, my engine blew up in the middle of the desert. The next day I lost my NEW job at wonder-bread I had spent 6 months trying to get because I was on probation and did not show up to work the day before, (there is no dial tone in the middle of the desert. The new,#*&%&(^%#,car was not even paid off yet. So now I have a worthless car with a brand new lifetime warranty transmission.

You can add my car to your list of junk 2000 dodge intrepids. It only has 84000 miles on it. Now my family is without a car. I,m told by my mechanic that it will cost approx.3800 + $ to fix it. It now sits in his shop waiting for me to tell him what to do. Well unfortunately I don't even the +$ to get it fixed. My wife is so MAD at me right now its not fun anymore. I wish we never bought that DAM car.

I have a 1999 Concorde which I've been driving for little over 1 year. Just recently I've notice smoke coming out of the tail pipe. I keep my car in good condition so I thought it was just a minor problem. Come to find out my Chrysler Mechanic told me the problem is that my engine is worn out or I might have bad rings. It's only 78000 miles on my car. So next I ask him how much would the cost be to repair, He says around 4,000-7,000. That's crazy! I think company should have a recall and fix the problem. There's been to many complaints for the company not to do nothing. Right is Right and Wrong is Wrong! These cars have a defect and the owner should not be held responsible for there wrong doing. I'll be going back to the car dealership who sold me this car and there will be Helllll when I get there.

My daughters 2000 dodge intrepid 4-door with 40,000 just went out on her. They changed their oil every 3000 miles. The dodge dealer in Hartville, Ohio said their timing chains failed and caused the engine to be stripped. Now my daughter has to drive her relatives car until she gets another car. Her warranty was 3 year 36,000 miles. It doesn't appear that the dealer wants to help. The car is not paid in full yet.
What would you recommend they do? Thanks for any help you can give us.

CAR FAILURE # 551 March 07, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
The engine on my 2000 Chrysler Concorde was destroyed February 14, 2005. The tell-tale ticking sound began and the oil light illuminated. We drove to our dealership and after a diagnostic test was told the engine was destroyed by a clogged oil intake screen. Maintenance on the vehicle was performed as stipulated and the car had 98,000 miles. Based on the reports of what I've read we are on the high end of the mileage regarding the engine failures. I've been fortunate enough to trade the vehicle in, getting a penitence of its worth. I provided a borrowed $6,000 down payment so I am essentially out the money I would have been out had I repaired the engine. The quoted repair cost was $7,900. I have begun to post statements on all websites I can locate. Any additional information you can provide would be helpful.
Thank you,

Hi. I am a very upset owner of a Dodge Intrepid and currently working with a friend of whom is a willing to work with a class action law suit. I have created a petition and if you would link to it then it would be great appreciation and working together to get Daimler Chrysler to pay. I can afford to fight and will. Non-Profit let help. CAR FAILURE # 549 March 07, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Please note that my engine in my 2000 Concord seized while driving to work in a snow storm on January 4, 2005. I only have 40,000 miles on my 4 year old car with a 5 Year/50,000 Mile Extended Warranty which I paid over $900 for and Chrysler will not help! I was fortunate that I was slowing down for a red light when it seized. The local car repair shop told me that my timing belt broke and destroyed the engine and that it was a common problem in the 2.7L engines that Chrysler put in their cars due to the Oil Distribution System. Chrysler blames the problem with Sludging in the engine and it will cost me $6,000 to replace the engine. They want me to show my receipts for my oil changes which I did not save. When I went to the shops that I had my oil changes done some were not on the system because I did not return within a year and the latest shop where I change my oil just received a new computer system and just started to record the changes on February 15, 2005 but not prior to this date. This leaves me with a big bill that I should not have to pay!
I will be filing a complaint with the NHTSA and the CAS. Also, I know that there is a class action lawsuit being or already is filed against Chrysler for this problem. I need to find out how to get my name on this lawsuit. Please let me know what I can do to help escalate this problem and how to get associated with the lawsuit. I can be e-mailed at WRLPAL@Aol.com or by replying to this e-mail.
Thank you,
Wayne

I found your website and only wish I had found it six weeks ago. I bought a 2000 Chrysler Concorde 6 weeks ago with 94,000 miles. It is a beautiful car but has the 2.7 L V6. Well, on my way to work one morning, the car started thumping and knocking horribly and flames were coming out of the tail pipe. It eventually died out. I had to get it towed only to find out that the timing chain in the engine basically fell apart causing all kinds of internal problems such as bent intake and exhaust valves. The repair is nearing over $3,000.00. Ill never own another Chrysler again.

CAR FAILURE # 547 March 07, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. Last week, very unexpectedly, my oil light came on. Minutes later, the
engine began knocking. I called my husband who told me to pull over immediately and he'd come meet me. When he got there, he checked the oil dipstick which indicated that there was oil in the car....still he added 2 quarts and when we tried the engine again, it quieted down. I headed to the dealership who told me at first there was an oil pressure gauge problem. Later, they said that I had so much sludge build up in my oil pan that oil flow was not occurring properly in the car. I had just recently had my oil changed and there was no mention of oil sludge. They told me that I they could try to clean the sludge from the oil pan and hope to get oil flow back to normal for about $600 OR I could spend approx. $7000 on a new engine for
my 5 year old car with 84,000 miles on it. I opted for the cleaning with hopes of getting the car running again so I could just get rid of it. They did clean the sludge for me but told me that it's really just a band-aid and I should consider a new engine or better yet, new car. Of course, they had already contacted the sales department...without my knowledge, about purchasing a new or used car. Feeling like a complete heel, after being told that I had run the engine to long between oil changes, a friend told me of a recent TV news report citing the exact problem I had experienced with my car. This led me to a internet search whereby I ended up at your website. I've lodged a complete with the traffic and safety administration and at this point am just trying to get rid of the car. I've not had any problems with this vehicle in the past 5 years, but to have such a big one like this hit now really has me blown away. I'm really disappointed and I doubt I will buy another Dodge vehicle....ever.
Sincerely,
Karen

CAR FAILURE # 546 March 07, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I was the owner of a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. This car had only a few problems until the last oil change in September 2004. Later that week the engine started pinging intermittently for a few days then the engine seized at a major intersection during my commute to work. There was no indication from the oil light or temperature gauge of a problem. DaimlerChrysler Service Contracts (7 year/72,000 miles) has refused to pay for the repair service stating poor maintenance! Even though all maintenance and several oil changes for this car were done at the dealership. My engine blew at 53,000 miles due to oil sludge with no prior warnings. There is no reason why this should have happened to a car that is only 4 years old. This expenses of this problem are over $5,000 in a failed attempt to replace the engine this a duplicate 2.7 liter engine that also failed. In addition I've spent another $5,000.00 to get rid of the car. My research indicates that Chrysler/Dodge liter engine that is the standard issue in the 1998 through 2002 Dodge Intrepid has a major design flaw of which Chrysler, by now, is aware but refuses to repair or recall. Chrysler needs to acknowledge this and cover the cost of this repair to my vehicle. I purchased a service contract to cover this kind of expense and I should not a have to pay a premium price for such an inferior engine.

Peyton

CAR FAILURE # 545 March 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have recently had problems with my 2000 Chrysler Concord. The car started making a noise so I took it a mechanic where he told me that Chrysler has had a problem with rod and main bearings going out around 70,000 miles. He proceeded to tear the top of the engine down to find the cause of the noise. When he got the top of the engine torn apart he noted that the timing chain had been "slapping" the sides of the housing. He also noted that the engine was full of sludge. The engine has had the motor oil changed about every 5000 miles. I could not understand why this would occur since the oil has been changed with regularity using 5w-30 which Chrysler recommends. According to their maintenance schedule "A" oil changes under normal operating conditions oil and filter should be changed every 7500 miles. This car is driven mostly on the highway during the week, back and forth to work with approximately 16 out of 20 miles being freeway at speeds of 60-70 MPH. I have since started to find information on the web that there are engine problems like mine with the 2.7L engine building up sludge and failing with great consistency. I also understand that Chrysler is not alone in this issue and that other manufacturers have extended warranties on their engines with sludge build up. I also understand that there have or will be class action lawsuits filed with Chrysler. I also find it incredible that Chrysler admits no liability with this problem considering that the 2.4 and the 3.0 L engines seem not to have this problem. It would seem apparent to me that it is not just people with the 2.7L engine that would not follow a routine maintenance schedule with regards to changing the oil, but a design flaw on Chryslers behalf. Chrysler should stand behind their product with word starting to spread quite rapidly across the web and newspapers.
Sincerely,
Don

CAR FAILURE # 543 March 05, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought my Concorde in June of this last year. Last night, my 2 year old son and I were coming home from my mother-in-laws house at about 7:30pm. Its dark, and about 20 degrees out. We decided to travel the back roads (to help the baby to fall asleep). We got about 3-4 miles from town and all of a sudden the motor started knocking and died. It was seized up. Here we were, in the cold, no heat and not in walking distance of a house. I kept thinking about my son freezing. I held him tight in my jacket to keep him warm. I knew he wasn't warm because I was cold myself. About 45 minutes later, my husband arrives. THANK GOD... I told him I was leaving and on my way home or we cold have both died of hypothermia. If it weren't for him thinking we were taking such a long time to get home, he would never of thought we had a problem and came to our rescue. As of this morning, I looked up stuff about the Concorde and low and behold, almost everyone's story is just like mine. Now we have no car, a 6000 loan and my children visit the doctor weekly. They have ADHD, ADD and ODD. What do I do now?

Add my name to the ever growing list of poor people who have gotten suckered in by the dealer's selling this poor excuse of a motor the 2.7 . My car only has 50,000 miles on it . It has a nice design that just cuts thru the wind , if the wind hit's my driveway from the right direction. Because of the poor motor, which I can't afford to replace, so it sits there. Please keep me up to date on any relief that might come about.

I have called Chrysler and a local dealer dodge dealer and neither can give the name of my zone rep.
What is a zone rep and how do I get in touch with them? Do you think we should get the car fixed in hopes that chysler will refund the money or are most people dumping the cars and buying new ones? Just curious - either way I have to come up with the $.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

CAR FAILURE # 540 March 05, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 2001 Dodge Intrepid with only 41,000 miles on it. My engine started making a tapping noise and when I took it to my mechanic he couldn't believe the sludge he found under the valve cover. A used engine is $1,800 and a new engine is $3,400! I still owe $6,000 on this car and have driven it less than two years! I called Chrysler and they made me tow it to a Dodge dealer to " have the problem diagnosed." I have now been told by another mechanic that they will not cover any of the cost to repair it, and I will be stuck paying a bill for labor to"diagnose it",so I will have to trade it and lose money on it! This is unexcusable!

CAR FAILURE # 539 March 04, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Well my 1998 dodge intrepid 2.7 engine just died with less than 54K miles. This car was a company car with the oil regularly changed. I bought out the lease and have maintained it since. A little over a year ago I replaced a fouled oil sensor. Burned 1.25 qts of oil in the last 200 miles and made a terrible knocking then died. This was my second intrepid my ’95 had it’s transmission die w/ 30K miles just past the 3 yrs. But dodge transmissions are another issue. I’ve replaced both cars with Hondas.

CAR FAILURE # 538 March 04, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Our 2000 Chrysler Concord started making a horrible knocking noise one day. According to our mechanic it was a bad rod. Needless to say we were making payments on it for another year and half, and were unable to drive the damn thing. Now I'm stuck with the dilemma of either selling for $700.00 or getting a used "Chrysler engine" if the used engine is anything like there other engines, I guess it's a no brainer. Have you heard anything about a class action suit? Thanks

There is like a tappet noise on the right side of the engine at the top It is a 2.7 liter engine and the engine is still running smooth could you tell me what the problem could be and has this been a common problem? Are the valves adjustable?

CAR FAILURE # 536 March 03, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a Dodge Intrepid 2001. I was driving my car one day and suddenly the car just instantly died on me. I was on a busy highway and there were not even any warning signs. The car just stopped instantly leaving me with no car because I could not afford to pay the bill to get another engine put in. I had not even had the car for 2 years. I was thankful that my 3 small children were not in the car with me at the time because I could have gotten into a serious accident. I would appreciate to be reimbursed for this car or at least get an engine that really works. After my incident with my car I talked to several mechanics that had dealt with the same problem from the 2.7l engines. Please keep me up on the status with this situation. I am willing to do whatever I can to help get this problem resolved.

CAR FAILURE # 535 March 03, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
On the evening of March 2, 2005 while driving on Interstate 70 between Catonsville, Md. and Frederick, Md. our check engine light came on & we stated to hear a unfamiliar noise. We managed to find a exit ramp off of this very busy road just as our engine completely died & we drifted,(We had no power at all & were lucky that the exit ramp was on a slight incline) to a less traveled road. We were out in the middle of nowhere on a very cold night but we did have a cell phone to call our Road Service. We were about 30 miles from home & we were towed to the shop near our home where we have work done on our cars & The tow truck driver drove us home also. I am 65 years old & my Husband is 68 years old & had bypass surgury in Nov. 2004. It was a very stressful situation to be in since it was so cold and we had no heat anymore & the wait for the tow was about 45 minutes and we were stopped not too far from the exit ramp & we would watch the cars leave the ramp at some high speeds & pray that they would not hit us. We bought this car new in 1998 because we loved the style, we needed a new car for traveling & we still have (3) old chrysler product cars --a 1958 Plymouth which I bought in 1968, 1965 Plymouth Sport Fury 318 with 118,000 miles, 1987 Dodge Ram PU with 318 engine with 128,000 miles.( No trouble with their engines.) Our Intrepid has about 44,000 miles which to us is almost a new engine & we are shocked that this has happened. Not only will it probably cost as much as a good used car( our mechanic thought it probably will cost about $6000.00.)but also the scary situation we were in because of this inferior engine.

This is gonna sound like a broken record, after getting on this web site. I have a 2000 intrepid, 72,000 miles, and guess what???? you got it the engine is blown...... All I can say is this is one unhappy lady. I can't afford $ 2500 plus to fix the car and I still owe on it. So what are we suppose to do Chrysler? CAR FAILURE # 532 March 03, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
In Jan 04, I purchased a used 1999 2.7L Intrepid with around 60,000 miles on it. In Dec 04, the oil light started blinking whenever I was stopped. I was driving on Interstate 10, just outside Tucson, AZ, when my engine lurched and my car lost nearly all momentum. The car didn't completely stop, but I couldn't go over 35 mph. I did manage to make it to a Dodge dealership a few miles away. It was a Saturday, so the technician wasn't there, but someone looked at it and took it for a test drive, and pronounced it was just short of oil. He added some and told me I wouldn't have any trouble making it home (an hour away). He was right. I made it home just fine, but my car never started again. I had it towed to a Dodge dealership near my house and they quoted a $6500 repair bill. The mechanic freely admitted the Intrepid 2.7L engines are flawed and explained why the engine was so sludged up. The service manager even admitted the engines were problematic for an large number of people, despite their maintenance. They also admitted no responsibility and told me to contact Chrysler. I have called several times and have either been disconnected due to "unusually high call volume" or put on hold (I hung up after an hour).

Our 2000 Intrepid engine just failed while I was driving. We were driving on a desolate area of PA. Not the worse was that my wife, sister and law and 1 year old son were in the car. Not to mention it was his 1st birthday. We spent 1 1/2 hour waiting for the tow truck in bitter cold. I have always bought Chrysler products but after reading about the problem as of late I would touch them. I hope that they can change there problem. I have no idea what our 1 income family will now do for a car. Thanks Chrysler.

Gentlemen: I had no idea that Chrysler was having such a bad record with their 2.7L engine. I just purchased a used 04 Sebring LX Conv. from a Chrysler dealer ship with 18,500K on it (11,000 miles). Had I seen your web site sooner I would not have purchased this car. To your knowledge has there been any modifications done to the engine to try and remedy some of the problems?

I want to tell you how much I appreciate your coming up with this web site. I am in the process of writing everyone I can think of to get some help in this matter. I reference your web site in all of my letters. I spoke with one of the local Chrysler dealerships here in Charlotte, NC last week and the attitude was apologetic and knowing from the service department. I think that they know they are going to have to resolve this matter soon. You may also include my email address on my letter if you like.

CAR FAILURE # 528 March 01, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 1999 dodge intrepid with the 2.7 engine. Well at the beginning of February the engine light came on. We took it to a local mechanic and they did a complete check over of the car for us. They told us that the fuel pump needed to be replaced and the timing chain was looking worn and should be replaced. They recommended that we get rid of the car as soon as possible because everything they have read on this motor was that it was not worth fixing. Well did not get rid of it soon enough. My wife was going to watch a grade school volleyball game about 2 weeks later, when the motor started running extremely rough. Thankfully she was close to the school when this happened. She parked the car and we had it towed back to the local mechanic. After his inspection, the timing had jumped two teeth and basically with 9 hours of labor to fix the timing chain, it was not worth it. I got the car home and decided to put the new timing chain in myself, I figured what do I have to lose. While doing the timing chain I was also going to put in a new oil pump because my oil light has started flickering when at a stop. When I took the engine apart to get to the timing chain, I found that the upper right timing chain guide had shattered and that had allowed the timing chain to jump 2 teeth. Since it had only jumped two teeth there appeared to be no damage to the engine. I ended up replacing the timing chain, the tensioner, the tensioner arm, the right upper guide, the oil pump and the water pump. I have since started the car and it sounded great except now I have no oil pressure. It sits in my garage to this day. The car has 97000 miles on it and still looks really good but we did the oil changes regularly and still have these kind of problems. Who would have thought that within a matter of weeks the car would go from no problems to you name it going wrong. I would not recommend anyone buying an intrepid or any car with this 2.7 liter engine. I just wish Chrysler would stand behind there car.

I'm yet another unfortunate owner of 1999 2.7L engine. My engine started knocking while traveling at highway speed. No warning at all (check engine light. etc). Mileage is only 85k. Cost to fix is $3000 for rebuild engine, or $6000 - $8000 for brand new engine. I opted not to fix. What's the use, it the "new" engine will fail sooner or later. I'm never buying another Chrysler product and I'm also spreading their quality issues as much as possible.

CAR FAILURE # 526 March 01, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My 1999 Dodge Intrepid engine blew with 66,000 miles, 2/11/05. There was no warning. Have had oil changes and service regularly. The car broke down on I-4 in Florida at about 65 mph. There was no Chrysler dealer in the nearest town, Haines City. Had it towed to a Chevrolet dealership. The engine repair was approximately $7000.00. The rest of the car is in excellent shape, however, I was not aware of this flaw problem until someone at work mentioned they had a problem with the same motor. Had I known this, I would not have had the repairs made. I have not contacted Chrysler, but I will after reading this information, and I hope to join a class action. Thanks for your enlightenment.

CAR FAILURE # 525 March 01, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Same story, 58,000 miles and engine stopped. did all the paper work, calls, complaints and chrysler came back with they will pay for the labor on the new engine but it will cost me $5,000.00. they told me to tow my car back to the dealer and then they proceeded to take my engine apart and throw it in my trunk in pieces. then was told it was oil sludge and there is nothing they can do about that it was my neglect. (what a joke, me and 500 other people) they i had to pay them $268.00 to tell me that and have my car re-towed back to my house where it sits on my driveway.

CAR FAILURE # 523 March 01, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Just saw the web site and wanted to add my story to the data base. I bought my car used in Oct 2004, 2 weeks later the rod bearings were replaced. Thought I would be good to go , was not. Last Wednesday my engine seized while driving home I had 68000 miles on the car. I have contacted Dodge, they were no help you would think with all the issues of this engine there would be some program in place.

CAR FAILURE # 522 February 28, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Purchased 2000 Dodge Intrepid with 82, 500 miles on it. Engine began to make "knocking" noise and progressively got worse. Engine Light is now on and the #1 cylinder rod bearings are destroyed. Mechanics blaim sub-standard maintenance regarding oil changes etc. This web-site confirms my thinking that the engine is defective. Why buy another 2.7 Liter from salvage for $2500. when the same issue would be present.

CAR FAILURE # 520 February 28, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I came across your website while doing some searching on timing chains and Chryslers, and was surprised to find that this is a common problem. I was driving on the Garden State Parkway near Forked River, New Jersey this past Saturday night when I heard a popping sound, then the engine went dead. I looked under the hood and the plastic cover over the engine was torn and oil/gas was splattered everywhere. We needed to be towed off the GSP by their tow truck, then had to call AAA after that for another tow. Since we were about 80 miles from home, this resulted in a towing charge of over $200. Luckily, it was only my wife and myself in the car.
Reading the stories on your website and others (www.dontbuyone.org, www.autosafety.org), many of the stories are identical to mine. The car is now with my mechanic and I am waiting to hear from him. I am not expecting good news.

CAR FAILURE # 519 February 27, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My 2000 Intrepid also failed prematurely at 79,000. The good news was, (if there was any) is that it still ran, although barely. This allowed me to drive it into the local Honda dealership that promised $2000 trade for any vehicle that can be driven in. I took a ~$5000+ loss, but was glad to see it go. Since then I have printed out a stack of warnings that I put on the windshield of all the Intrepids that I see, warning them of the premature failure and Chryslers refusal to stand behind its products, while identifying this web site for verification. Please help me in my goal of convincing as many people as you can never to buy any Daimler/Chrysler or Jeep Products. Together we can make a difference

CAR FAILURE # 518 February 26, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Our Dodge Stratus has been sitting for 2 years due to the fact that the engine is flawed something terrible. We've had it checked out by a mechanic and it will costs basically and arm and a leg to have it fixed. And we do not have those kinds of resources to make the necessary repairs. We would appreciate some feedback on this issue. Thank you.

CAR FAILURE # 517 February 25, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Hello....I am shocked to discover this is a universal issue. Two weeks ago I was driving down the road and all of the sudden my Car just died and it was difficult to steer. I had the car towed to my home and then to a local Dodge Dealership(Summerville,SC) where they said my Timing Chain had broke and that it would cost $300 to look inside and see how much damage was done and that in most cases these engines would require a new rebuilt engine at a $5,000 price tag....I owe $8,000 on this car and that is just not an option for me..Something should be done if everyone has this exact same issue.

To all owners with a Dodge or Chrysler complaint. I have written the FTC at FTC.Gov  Please go to the web site and post your story. It will take about two days and they will contact you. At least they are willing to read and investigate your story. I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid, I have had just about every complaint mentioned in this web page. Now I too have a yard sculpture. Please pass this along so that we can be heard. I have written NEWS PAPERS, MEDIA, DOT, NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION, LAWYERS, CHRYSLER, ANYONE I CAN. Please do the same. Angela B.

CAR FAILURE # 515 February 24, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
UPDATE: Previous $1,600 repair of engine timing chain. - The previous events occurred last part of April of '03. In February of '04, the engine completely seized up and had to be replaced at a cost of over $4300 including towing expenses. We installed a remanufactured Jasper engine in it. Also very recently the AC compressor (which hasn't succeeded in adequately cooling the car since the first year) siezed up. Rather than dump more money into this heaping pile of grease, we simply had the belt removed so we could continue driving the car. It's going to be uncomfortable this summer though!

CAR FAILURE # 514 February 24, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Hi, We purchased a 2001 Dodge Intrepid in March of 2002 with 30000 miles.5 weeks ago I was driving to work and the car just konked out and wouldn't start. I called my service station to tow it back to their shop. I had them look at it to find the problem. A week later they said that the engine had seized and we will need a new one. He also said that it was no fault of ours because we had changed the oil more than regularly (by him). We called Daimler Chrysler and they had it towed to Martin Dealership in Turnersville, NJ. 3 weeks later we get a call from the mechanic saying the adjuster will deny the claim unless we show them our oil change receipts. That day I took all the receipts I saved (about 12 or 13 of them) and brought them to the mechanic, he them faxed them to the adjuster. Another week passed and the mechanic called and said the adjuster denies the claim again because we had a Sunday receipt and he also said that nobody works on Sundays. That was why they were not paying to fix the car, the dealership said it will cost $ 6500.00 to fix the problem. I'm pretty outraged that he uses excuses like this and they can just get away with taking our money and not taking care of the promises of the contract. They know the problem was with the engine and not a negligence of us and using other excuses like the reciepts are all in black ink and the same hand writing. We were told all this by the mechanics at Martin. We never did get to talk to the adjuster and I think that is really bad business on Daimler Chryslers side. Thanks for hearing me - Bob R.

I have a 2000 dodge intrepid, guess what! yep...motor failed it only has 72,000 miles on my lovely 2.7 engine. wish I had done research on this wonderful motor. I was blown away to find out how many people that has had problems with this motor. they are saying "improper maintenance" is the cause of the problem. I doubt this many people are not properly maintaining there vehicles. I work at a Goodyear repair shop and know that I have maintained my vehicle properly.

We had our engine fail in our 2001 intrepid when my wife was driving down the interstate hwy.We were told that this is a common problem with this engine and dodge is not willing to stand behind there product it will cost more to fix the car than it is worth and on top of that we are still making payment's not very happy about it I will never own another dodge product again.

CAR FAILURE # 511 February 22, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
It is hard to believe that a corporation like Chrysler can actually say that there is nothing wrong with this engine...not to mention that they take no responsibility for its failure. In the last week I have spent my time trying to talk to people at the Chrysler Corp and needless to say I have been going in circles for days. I have spoken to 3 people total and not one of them has had the same speech yet. One said that there was nothing wrong with this engine and the other that they have had no complaints about it. However today was the kicker!!! I spoke to MATT at Chrysler(1-800-992-1997arbitration dept.) and he proceeded to tell me that not only was I stuck with a 1988 Intrepid with 63,880miles but that it was no longer their responsibility. I was floored!! He went on to say that because I bought this car used that I should have known better!! I bought it knowingly with only 6K miles left on manufacturer's warranty. Apparently after the manuf. warranty is over Dodge & Chrysler really mean it's over! How dare they?!!! They have known for years that this engine has a sludge problem, if they didn't know it why then did they make improvements to the same engine in 2002? Sounds fishy to me! So now my question is this: Why has Impartial Services group or CCRG been given a list of customers with this same problem and now suddenly this list doesn't exist? I spoke to Rayleen at CCRG(1-214-634-9100x488) and she told me that Chrysler gave them this list but she doesn't know how people get on it. And for me to call Chrysler and tell them that I want to be on this list. So here start the circles again because it was Matt who told me that there was no list and no outside company doing this for them? So then why does Rayleen have this list?
My point is this...Chrysler needs to help us! The American public bought this car for dependability and service. In my opinion neither has been achieved. Now I am stuck with a 1998 Intrepid with only 63,880K and it is a parking lot ornament. There is NO VALUE in my car....And Chrysler knows this!!! Shame on them!! You can bet though that the CEO and other high up executives don't drive this car and that this problem doesn't affect them or their pocket books!

CAR FAILURE # 509 February 22, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I've already sent in my response which is number 00284. The reason i'm writing you is that I was actually trying to make something happen before I discovered your website by accident in which I was glad I found it. However I don't think anything substantial is going to transpire unless some specific direction is given out to the readers. Let me share some info I have discovered. First of all I'm a mayor of a small town in Illinois called Belgium. I thought I could make some headway because of this in which I have to a small degree. Here's what I've done so far. I've sent letters to my U.S. Congressman Tim Johnson , U.S. Senators Dick Durbin & Barrack Obama. The only assistance I've received so far was from Congressman Tim Johnson in which he directed me to contact the national highway transportation agency in which i did. However they told me that they only deal with safety issues so they told me to contact the Federal Trade Commission in that they deal with the engine and transmission issues. So i did and talked to an agent who took my story. I also gave your website address for them to read some of the letters. The only thing that the agent told me is that my issue goes into a pool and it might get looked at or it might not it all depends on how many complaints their are regarding the issue. So it is important that the public contact the FTC and leave their complaint. Also I strongly urge all the readers to contact their U.S. congressman and senators and also their state
senators and representatives and also their state attorney generals office and make sure they give this website address so the officials can see how many people this issue has affected. This is one angle we should be taking now the other one is that we should contact an attorney who is willing to take on a class action lawsuit. I'm asking you to please contact me by email if you will assist with this and we can exchange phone numbers.
Sincerely - Tim J.

Hello, my name is Regina Matute and my husband and I purchased a 2000 Dodge Intrepid in October 2003. It is in the shop right now with engine problems. It is the 2.7 engine and it had the "sludge" that was talked about. It is a shame that people are having to go through these issues with this particular car, and I am one of them. The engine is being replaced and it's sad! We don't have that kind of money just laying around for problems as such. What do we do about this and do we talk to as some means of rectifying this situation? I can't believe the statistics on the Intrepid! Needless to say, I will NEVER buy another Dodge as long as I live!!!!!!!!!!!! I look forward to hearing back from you.

CAR FAILURE # 506 February 22, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have just been notified that my 2.7 liter engine on my dodge intrepid is on it's last legs. I bought it used with 39,997 miles and have drove 9,500 miles since. I changed the oil with 5w-30 as specified and at the proper intervals according to the extended warranty (M.A.P.) of 5,000 miles. Now it sits in my driveway waiting for help.

CAR FAILURE # 505 February 21, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
In October 2004 the engine on my 2000 Concorde failed. No warning, 67,000 miles. Had it towed to my auto repair shop who informed me the next day that my engine needed to be replaced, timing belt blew, etc. They also informed me that these cars are known for this problem and that Chrysler was well aware of it. I looked online and sure enough!! I had it towed to the dealership in town. I told them up front that I was aware of the problem, had maintenance records to show my oil changes and expected that my 70,000 mile warranty would cover the cost. Six weeks later I had my car back, completely repaired under the warranty. This took some doing on the part of the service manager (he was actually on my side). I plan to sell the Concorde this spring and buy another Honda Civic. The last one I had for 180,000 miles and never even needed a tune up. For all I know it's still on the road.

CAR FAILURE # 504 February 21, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
In November 2003 I went to visit my parents in Warsaw Va. and my car began to knock and the engine light and other lights came on and my car stopped immediately while driving. I was alone (female) and I couldn't imagine what was wrong with my car that I had maintain regularly and only had 58,000 miles on it. My car has been sitting for 15 months while I am making monthly payments and cannot afford to purchase a new engine. We have struggled all year with only my husband's work truck Mazda B2200 (which isn't large enough for my family to ride together). This has been a nightmare for our family! If this wasn't enough to deal with when my husband called Chrysler to complain they were so rude to us by insisting the reason for this failure was poor maintenance! I went and got all our oil change receipts to prove our case. However, they were no help what so ever. This was such a rejection due to the fact that this was our third chryler purchased. We are asking for your help in this matter.
Sincerely - Jerry V.

CAR FAILURE # 501 February 19, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
What can I say? I got screwed!! I bought the car for my wife on February 22, 2003 for $8,650. It had 38,780 miles on it. On March 15th, 2004 and 10,660 miles later, the timing chains broke! I changed the oil three times that year which was very sufficient. I looked into every option at having it fixed. If I had chosen to fix the engine, it would have cost me $6,450.72. It just wasn't worth it. The cheapest alternative that I found was to sell the car to a local junk yard. The strange part was that while I was looking for an engine at that particular junk yard ( and many others, which by the way they are very hard to find...I wonder why?) they happen to have a damaged gold 1999 Chrysler Concord with the 3.3 liter engine which is way better. Since this car was the same year and color as my Chrysler piece of junk I bought it and gave them my car for salvage, minus the parts I needed to fix the replacement car. It was the quickest and cheapest route, but I'm still screwed in the long run since this replacement car has a damaged title. The last I heard about my old piece of junk was that the salvage yard ran a fork lift into the side of that car. It's too bad, it was in excellent condition with the exception of a piece of crap engine!! Every mechanic and salvage yard employee that I've talked to knew all about the problems with the 2.7 liter. The thing is that I know there are many more of us out there, but they just don't know that this many people are having the same problem. Someone should contact 48 hrs. and have them do a news story on it, that might grab someone's attention. If there are any class action suits against Chrysler on this, count me in. They owe me $8,650 bucks!!

CAR FAILURE # 500 February 19, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Recently had my oil changed in my 2000 Dodge Intrepid with 91,568 miles on it, as I did every 3 months like clockwork as long as I owned it. Two weeks later while driving on a crowded city street, the engine light suddenly came on which was quickly followed by a bang that sounded like the bottom dropped out of the car. I almost wrecked it into another car, but got it pulled over. The engine was running as if it was mis firing. I was able to limp it on home, the car shaking violently. I had it towed to my mechanic who came back and said that one of the pistons had shot through the block. He said he had never seen this happen on a car like this, with a good maintenance record. He had no good explanation for it. Now I am stuck with a $4000 bill for a new engine if I want one on a car I still owe 4k on. I was just sick about it, till I found this site. NOW I AM ANGRY! WE ALL NEED TO GET ANGRY AND DAIMLER - CRYSLER , needs to be held accountable for it. What are we all going to do about it?

I am writing in response to your site I have found....the car stopped running while driving on the highway, the dealer says the oil has slugged up in the engine and if I cannot prove Records that the car has had oil changes every 3,000 miles I will have to pay $7,500.00 for the repair...I am outraged about this, any help would be greatly appreciated. My car is a 2001 Chrysler Sebring Convertible with 57,000 miles.

CAR FAILURE # 498 February 18, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I had to replace my engine in my Intrepid in November 2003 and have been paying for it since. I noticed some blue smoke a couple of months before having to replace it, but I just thought that because of the mileage that the piston rings were cracked and I was just leaking oil. I had no clue that the engines in these cars were bad and I even bought it used from a Dodge dealer. I am looking to trade it in for another vehicle, but none of the dealerships around Wichita are willing to take it for trade because of the stupid engine. The exterior and interior of the vehicle is in excellent condition and is well taken care of. I have contacted Dodge and I am not expecting a response from them at all. I was out driving with my daughter and all of a sudden the engine started grinding and I thought that was the end of the motor, I was right. When I get the loan paid off in April of 2006, I might as well push the car off a cliff (hard to find in Kansas)
because I will not get any money for trade in.

CAR FAILURE # 497 February 18, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought a used 2001 Dodge Intrepid with approximately 17,000 miles on it, in Oct 2002.In Sep 2004, with only 52,000 miles, the engine blew. I had it towed to three different mechanics and dealers. I was told anything from blown waterpump to cracked head to head gasket problem. Finally I was told that the engine seized because of sludge buildup. After asking what they were going to do to fix it, they turned around and said nothing because it was my fault, and that I had never changed the oil. I have several receipts and the majority of the oil changes were done at the Chrysler dealership that I bought it at. They still denied any assistance. So for the past 4 plus months I have ridden a bicycle to and from work 7 days a week and 20+ miles a day. I can't afford to just buy a new car or use a rental car until this is resolved. My fiancee also is riding a bike to work, My ex-wife died in August and my three kids live 45 miles away and since this engine failure I have not been able to visit them and give them the support that they need in their time of crisis. Phone consulation is not the same as being there in person. Although they are between 17 and 21 they still have gone through a very traumatic situation that is only being exacerbated because of the incompetence of Chrysler. I pray that there is some legal action available, now that I have found out thta this is an ongoing problem that they are fully aware of.

Hello, Our timing chain broke at 55,000 miles and now its costing us 2500 for repairs to it. After I pay this ransom I will sue to get some of it back. In my eyes its a defect and not a "normal waer and tear" problem. Is there anything you can help me with?

CAR FAILURE # 494 February 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought a used 2000 Intrepid with about 48,000 miles on it, and now at just under 60,000 miles, the engine is gone. It started making one horrendous engine knocking noise at about 55,000 miles, then progressively got much worse. Right before it went completely dead, I traded it in, and the used car dealership where I traded it into was supposed to pay off my remaining bank note on it, but failed to. Unfortunately, they went out of business soon afterwards, and now, I managed to get my old car back, but still owe about $4,000.00 on it, but without an engine, it's going to be very difficult to get rid of, and by the time I pay for another engine, the most I could probably get out of it would be $4,000.00. What do they call that? Up a "Up a creek without a paddle"...or something like that. Chrysler says the problem is more than likely caused by improper maintenance, which isn't the case with mine, or at least not since I've owned it. I can say this much, after being a Chrysler fan for over 40 years, this has soured me greatly towards them, and I will do everything within my power to see to it that no one that I know will ever consider purchasing one, and I'm known for having a loud mouth and talk to sometimes, hundreds of people per week, being a National Sales Director for a company. Chrysler has got to be insane for not taking care of this situation up front, as it's going to cost them much more in the long run from the bad publicity they're getting on it, and are soon to get much more.
Sincerely,
Jeff W.

CAR FAILURE # 493 February 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 with less than 41000 miles. The timing chain broke, causing the valves and lifters to become damaged - a repair bill of over $4000 (just the estimate!) - for a car that might be worth only $5000 to trade in?? - luckily the car was parked and not on the road when this happened. The local dealer service department is unwilling to even discuss or consider the repair that should be covered under my extended warranty. Needless to say I am extremely angered....I have learned it is folly to assume reliability and customer care from Chrysler and Dodge. Perhaps video documentation of customer horror stories compiled into a DVD along with examination of the mechanical difficulties might be in order - perhaps it might place a face to the pages and pages of experiences similar to mine? This is a project I would be glad to offer my production services pro bono (over 23 years of video production experience) - it has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words - how many words would be said by recording these stories to video? Any comments as to this idea would be welcomed! (as a side note - I have had to fill my printer with paper 5 times to print out these messages - makes you think, doesn't it??) please display my full name.

CAR FAILURE # 492 February 13, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I purchased a 2001 Intrepid SE with the 2.7L in February of 2002 from a Chrysler dealer. The car had supposedly been maintained in a way that only the franchise owner would accept, since he personally used the car (or so the tale is told). I purchased an additional 30k mile extended warranty for some assurance. My mistake was not purchasing more at that time. Strict manufacturer maintenance schedules were maintained, including receipts and entries in the owner's manual. Even with my habit of using Mobil One synthetic, as in all my vehicles, the sludge problem WAS avoided, but cooling issues succumbed to poor design. The radiator drain cock began to leak slowly. I was told that a plastic valve was installed in an alloy fitting, or vice versa, causing unfavorable fit over time. The dealer solution was to replace the radiator. Isn't that like replacing a roof on a house that has a hole underneath? Since I had considered this as a short term car until my college age son became more self-reliant, I decided to meticulously monitor the coolant levels instead. I even resorted to carrying distilled water and the 'special' coolant in my trunk. On one unfortunate morning, I checked and noticed that my level was lower than optimum and proceeded to the nearest auto parts store to double up on my coolant supply. It didn't make it.! After having a diagnosis of a cracked block, I found the gouging that exists on salvage engines. This is rather risky anyway, due to the lack of knowledge that exists regarding the engines origin. So, after having the car sit in my garage for several months (like several others I noticed on this board), being determined to take my time to find the best solution short of an 'as-is' sale, I found a mechanic nearby with a great reputation for service and pricing. I also located a distant remanufacture of these engines that sells in the same price range that junk yards sells for used engines, even though these yards will tell you '...I got the best price around...' Yeah, right. With a zero miles, remanufactured engine installed (approx. $2700 including installation), new tires and new brakes (3 weeks before the failure), this baby will be on the block as soon as I can get the keys back in my hand. Never, Never, Never again will I put my money on a Chrysler product. Oh, by the way, I understand that this SAME ENGINE is the entry engine to the new Motor Trend Car of the Year, the Chrysler 300! How's that for guaranteeing a steady customer flow. Line up to get yours!

CAR FAILURE # 491 February 13, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2000 dodge intrepid that engine failed on my vehicle ON 12/31/04 without any warning i almost hit a telephone pole because the steering went out and it was heavy traffic and snowy that day. I had 48331 miles on this vehicle. I had regular oil changes at 3000 miles and the filter change. due to the oil sludge my engine is destroyed. I still owe $7000.00 on this vehicle I cant drive or afford to have fix approx cost 8/9000 dollars for new engine. Chrysler financial calls my home Monday thru Saturday harassing about the payments. WHEN I tried to get help from were i purchased the vehicle Joe Ricci dodge in Dearborn Michigan they said it was my problem very rude to me.  I'm sick from reading the sites with the customers with this same problems. what is going to be done to help us. there has to be some kind of law in this world that they are violating. don't let them get away with this it is fraud under any law. there making money from defective a product that they know is DEFECTIVE. YOU CAN ADD ME TO THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT.

CAR FAILURE # 490 February 13, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My car quit yesterday. It has less than 50,000 miles on it. As described in your web site.. the cabin heat started to quit Thursday of last week. So in 3 days it died. I do not yet know what the dealership is going to do, as they were closed when we got it towed yesterday, but I wanted to drop you this line and will keep you posted. The ironic thing is, on Saturday - I had a routine oil change done and they found nothing wrong with the car. Hopefully with that documentation, I won't have problems having my warranty honored.
Sincerely,
Karla G.

CAR FAILURE # 489 February 13, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2001 Intrepid and when I went for my oil change my mechanic told me to have the dealership take care of the problem. Dealership charged me $930 and after I paid for the work I was told the repair was not warranted and that the engine would lock up on me. They told me to get rid of the car. Locked up about two months later, still owe $3000 and I really like the car and wanted my son to have it for school. Will cost upwards of $4000 or more to replace with the 3.2engine.I bought a FORD Escape and like it. Chrysler can stick it(I have had 6 or more but never again)

CAR FAILURE # 488 February 13, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I'm on my third Dodge Intrepid, the first one being a company paid for car, the second two, being ones that I personally purchased. The third one, unfortunately has the infamous 2.7 L engine, and at just under 60,000 miles on it, it started developing a serious rod knock, and has since gone dead. My personal background has been in the automotive aftermarket industry, doing everything from working in parts stores, to being a manufacturers rep to teaching diagnostics and emissions as well as selling the related equipment, and working for an engine manufacturer. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of the problems associated with this engine, then last March, I thought I'd found a way out of my problem, by trading my car in to a used car dealership. Unfortunately, the dealership that I traded it into, failed to pay off the note on my Intrepid, and strung me out for almost another whole year, with me making payments on the car I bought from them as well as my old Intrepid that I traded in to them. I'm having to go through the ever so slowly moving court system, and it doesn't look like I'll get any remedy anytime soon, as the principal at the dealership is supposedly going down for some of his unscrupulous dealings. Luckily, I just got my car back, but it still doesn't run, as the engine is out on it, and I'm left with a $3,700 balance on a car that I can't use or sell. I contacted Chrysler, and they said sorry, it's not covered, you must have been negligent in your upkeep and oil changes. I of all people am one that truly stresses preventative maintenance, especially after being involved for over 34 years in the automotive industry, and seeing what happens when people fail to so. I'm hoping that someone will start a class action suit with them, forcing them to pay up for all the misery they've caused so many people from what's obviously, a very inferior product. At this point, I'll never purchase another Chrysler product again, and I've been a loyal owner of Chrysler products for over 35 years now, and have owned more Chrysler products than any other autos on the market. I had also been thinking of purchasing a Dodge Ram truck, but this whole ordeal has completely left me with nothing but frustration, and a really bad taste in my mouth for their organization. I traded my Intrepid in on a Lincoln Navigator, and am currently looking at purchasing a new Nissan Titan truck.
Sincerely,
Jeff W.

CAR FAILURE # 487 February 13, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I purchased a 2001 Intrepid SE with the 2.7L in February of 2002 from a Chrysler dealer. The car had supposedly been maintained in a way that only the franchise owner would accept, since he personally used the car (or so the tale is told). I purchased an additional 30k mile extended warranty for some assurance. My mistake was not purchasing more at that time. Strict manufacturer maintenance schedules were maintained, including receipts and entries in the owner's manual. Yes my 1999 dodge intrepid just stopped while we were driving it to church one Sunday morning. I just thank god it happened when it did because we always go out to eat after church and if we had been going across the four lane highway one of us would be dead. December 16, 2003 we were on our way to church and without warning our car just quite. We bought the car used at a ford-Lincoln dealership therefore we bought an extended warranty on it. Ford denied our claim because our oil receipts from Express oil did not have the vin number on it. We hired an attorney and to make a long story short after trying to get in to court since February of 2004 (they hired an attorney then they canceled because they changed attorneys then this attorney called to see what we would settle outside of court for then they were let go and they went back to their orginal attorney and we finally got to go to court) we went this past week and were awarded $3900.00 after paying the attorney we end up with about 1900.00 so we are still making payments and still do not have the car. For some reason we were not allowed to bring up the fact that we received a free rental car any time work was done on the car so why are we not being reimbursed for the year they dragged their feet, and just plain aggravation. We are trying to decide weather to appeal or just take our loses and forget it. I did not know about the numbers you have given I will call them.

CAR FAILURE # 486 February 12, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Hi. I just discovered your web site. I work in a machine shop and have seen dozens of these 2.7 engines come in as "cores' for rebuilding. They always look the same. Sludged up gunk everywhere! Rod failures! What is the deal? I had considered buying one of these blown-up cars on e-bay,because you have to admit, they have classic lines! And they are usually cheap, but after looking at your web site-NO WAY! All I can say is, from the looks of the engines I've seen, something is just cooking the HELL out of the oil! Sorry I'm not an engineer; not exactly sure what is going on there! And I truly am a Dodge fan. This is depressing for me! Thanks Guys!

CAR FAILURE # 485 February 12, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I am 38 years old and have owned many cars. I routinely change the oil in all my vehicles before 2500 miles. This has caused all the vehicles that I own (until now) to make some younger person happy as they may not have much cash value but are mechanically sound when traded in at about 110,000 miles. That was until my experience with my 1998 Chrysler Cirrus. The Cirrus NEVER went past 2.500 miles without an oil change; all other routine maintenance was always performed on time. At 99,000 miles I brought the car in for an oil change. After driving the car for about an hour after the oil change, the oil light began to blink at idle. Immediately I pulled over and checked the oil level but that was fine. Within the next week the light began to flicker and come on more and more. The good news was that I had seen this website and others similar and knew immediately that the engine was about to die and saved myself the unnecessary expense of a mechanic replacing the oil pump and other parts. I never complained to Chrysler as they would have laughed at me because the car has 100,000 miles on it. However, anyone with any intelligence that may be reading this will understand that if proper maintenance is preformed, you can expect well over 100,000 miles out of today’s engines. That is except for Chrysler and especially the 2.7L of crap that comes in many of them. GOOD bye Chrysler forever, and if anyone from Chrysler actually does care. Today I purchased 2 new Saturn’s for my wife and I. We drove past several of your dealerships on the way there.

CAR FAILURE # 484 February 11, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I am not surprised to hear the stories from other Dodge Intrepid owners, as mine is going to cost me upwards of $3000.00 to have repaired, despite regular oil changes. I will never buy another Dodge product as a result of the unwillingness of Dodge to take responsibility of whart is obviously a manufacturer's defect. caoount me in on the complaint party.

We were just contacted by Ansleigh Faulingham, Chrysler/Dodge liter concern, Dallas, Texas. We were told that they could not help us after they requested all the bills for the rebuilt engine which was approximately $2000.00. The phone # we contacted above was 866-332-3746 ext. 498. I cannot believe Chrysler. I will never own another Chrysler car.

CAR FAILURE # 482 February 11, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that I bought used from Huntsville Dodge in March of 2001 with 18,239 miles. I was driving home with my seven year old son on January 17, 2005 doing 70 mph on the interstate in moderate traffic when my oil warning light came on. The engine seized not 10 seconds later. I had complete loss of power steering and brakes. Several cars had to make drastic maneuvers to avoid me. I did manage to coast to the side of the interstate. I had the car towed to a mechanic in Madison, AL who performed diagnostics and informed me that the engine would have to be replaced because it had failed due to inadequate lubrication caused by oil sludge buildup. The cost to me would be $5,711.99. I owed $3,400 on the car. I had regular oil changes at every 3,000 miles using 10W30 Valvoline. I have since sold the car to salvage, paid off the balance on my car loan, and purchased a new automobile (not a Dodge).

CAR FAILURE # 481 February 11, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Not too long ago I sent an e-mail about the problems I've had with my '01 Dodge Intrepid. Let me go over my PAST problems again. Replaced transmission computer ($200), replaced transmission shortly after ($1,500), replaced dual cooling fan unit ($300), replaced alternator ($270), replace brakes TWICE in 6 months ($300), clean evap. purge solenoid ($90), replace coolant housing/intake manifold gasket ($249), replace PCV valve ($36.74) towing all together approx ($350). So in the past 12 months I have spent approx. $3,295.74. Now mind you that does not include normal maintenance like a set of tires ($308) and oil changes (??). Where am I going with all of this? Yesterday about 5:30 pm while in the center lane on the interstate, the oil light came on and 15 seconds later the engine made a racket and seized up. Yep, the engine is DEAD and will cost $6,500 to replace with a REMANUFACTURED engine!!! Luckily I did have a chance to get off the interstate, cause as you know, the power steering goes out as well AND 5:30 pm is not a good time for this to happen. Never less to say I am ANGRY because this car has drained me of my financial resources with 2 YEARS LEFT TO PAY ON IT! SOMETHING HAS GOT TO BE DONE ABOUT THESE PROBLEMS! DO NOT BUY A DODGE AND DO NOT LET YOUR FRIENDS BUY ONE!

CAR FAILURE # 480 February 11, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
To whom it may concern: I was the owner of a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with a 2.7 liter engine. In October 2004 I had an oil change at 53,000 miles and shortly thereafter the engine started making a clicking sound intermittently. A few days later in the middle fo traffic it failed. I towed it to the dealership service dept. The prognosis was engine oil sludge. I had purchased the Chrysler Service Contract for 72,000 miles to cover various mechanical problems. Chrysler refused to cover the repair costs of this problem. The dealership quoted a repair cost of $7,000 which was more than the car was worth. I spent $4,500 to replace the damaged engine with another Chrysler/Dodge liter "remanufactured" engine. That engine also failed immediately after installation. I paid off my remaining balance of $3,900 to Chrysler Financial and sold the Intrepid for $50.00. This whole episode has cost me more than $9,000 including rental cars and various other expenses. I will never by another Chrysler product again.

CAR FAILURE # 479 February 10, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
This vehicle with 56800 miles quit while driving down interstate highway, in rush hour traffic. It has been well maintained oil changes every 3000 miles more than manufacturer recommendation. It has not been fixed yet as it's been only six days, and I'm weighing my options as repair costs are between $6000 and $7000 .This vehicle should be recalled, as it quit on road after oil light came on, after stopping the oil was checked and it was at full level. This motor has and infinite number of stories all the same problems, it must be STRONGLY CONSIDERED FOR RECALL BEFORE SERIOUS INJURY OCCURS TO SOMEONE, if it hasn't already. Chrysler blames it all on lack of maintenance, on owners part when in fact thousands of people have had the same problems with all Chrysler cars with this engine.
Thanks for you consideration in this matter

Same story...
As my wife pulled into a parking space the engine made a clunking sound and would not start. I had it towed to a Dodge dealer and the service manager told me that the timing chain had broken and most likely damaged the engine beyond repair. The car has 60,000 miles. I don't have the money to buy a new engine and I owe $3,100 on it. Come on, Chrysler! Your mistake...fix it.

CAR FAILURE # 477 February 10, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I am now a victim of the Dodge Intrepid! I had a valve go bad about six months ago and had that replaced $1200.00 worth of damage..... now two weeks ago I was informed my engine would need to be replaced. Do you have any information as to what I can do or what is currently being done about these problems??
Thanks,

CAR FAILURE # 476 February 10, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 2000 Concorde, and my 2.7 is destroyed. I replaced the timing chain @ 40,000, and the engine is done for at 54,000. Chrylser basically laughed at me.

CAR FAILURE # 475 February 10, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought a 1999 Chrysler Concorde in 2002. This past December 2004 (@70k miles), I was driving my car on the highway and the engine light came on, within 5 minutes my car started to freeze up. Thank God I was near an exit and was able to pull off of the highway (I had my 2 children and my nephew in the car with me). Needless to say the engine is shot and I am being told it will cost @ $6000 to get a new engine. Which I don’t have. It wasn’t until I started doing some research that I discovered how bad these engines are. I have had problems with this car literally since the day I bought it. The day I drove this car off of the lot it broke down. It was making this loud knocking noise and was sticking. The dealership I purchased the car from "fixed" it, but only because I purchased an extended warranty. I am now stuck with a car I can’t drive because I can’t afford to get a new engine and I still have two more years until I pay it off.

CAR FAILURE # 474 February 10, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My 1999 Concorde (bought new in August of 2000) is about to blow it's engine. I have been told that within the next 200 miles it will likely die. The car has 97,000 miles on it and is otherwise in great condition. I had planned to get at least a few more years out of this car. Now I learn that this is typical of the 2.7 L engine. How do I get on a class action list against Chrysler?

CAR FAILURE # 473 February 10, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Our 1999 Intrepid is sitting in the shop torn down. To do the repairs correctly is approx $6000+. If we just correct the immediate problem, but do not either replace the engine or tear it down and totally clean it out, it could run about $2500+, but there is no guarantee that when it is put back together that it won't immediately reoccur. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations? The car probably wasn't worth $6000 when it was working. HELP!!!

CAR FAILURE # 471 February 09, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have been told by my mechanic that it is a matter of time before the engine in my 2001 Dodge Intrepid "blows." The engine is showing signs of sludge etc. When I found out what a widespread problem this was, I just couldn't believe that Chrysler Corporation wasn't doing anything to "make it right." There is an obvious fault in the manufacturing of the engine. Like many of my fellow Dodge Intrepid owners I do not have the financial means to buy a new car when this one should have many good miles left. I am a teacher and certainly do not have money to compensate for this corporate mistake. I have been told that Chrysler service people "laugh" at people who have problems, that the "complaint line" is a three hour wait, and that the company just tries to blame the owner of the car. Please tell me this is not true. You know there is a problem------make it right!!!! There is going to have to be a money settlement equivilent to the
installation of a completely new engine. ( One would certainly not want to replace this 2.7 engine with another one that would simply have the same problem.) Please restore my faith in a company I trusted when I bought my car.
It has come to my attention that the company "took care" of the Mercedes customers, but that they plan to do nothing for the rest of us. Please prove that information wrong. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

CAR FAILURE # 470 February 09, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 1999 Chrysler Concorde that I purchased in October 1998. The car has 67,000 miles and the engine locked up one morning when i was returning home from dropping my 10 year old daughter off at school. I live in the mountains of North Carolina and the roads are curvy. I was in the middle of one of those curves when my engine quit. The the engine quit my steering and brakes failed too. Luckily I was able to struggle with the steering enough to complete the curve and get the car off the road. Had I not been strong enough to keep turning the steering wheel I don't know what would have happened.

CAR FAILURE # 469 February 09, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Last night coming home on the freeway I was in the left lane going 65-70, (the speed limit), and my engine died. I had my car towed to the dealer last night, and this morning the service tech told me he thinks it might be the timing chain that broke. In order to verify that, they would have take the car apart to determine if that is indeed the case, and to get started it would cost $280.00. If they found that the timing chain did break, then it probably did some damage to the valves, and that could run " a couple thousand dollars". I told him to check and let me know. Five minutes
later he called me back and said after speaking to another mechanic and his supervisor, they know from experience that it is the timing chain and there is a 90% chance that it ruined the valves. I said that if that were the case, then someone should have told us when we bought the car that the engine is only good for 80 or 90 thousand miles. He then said that the car was unfixable, or to replace the engine would be about $6,000, which is more than the car is worth. I then asked him there was a recall on this and his response was no. He was not aware of any class action suite, but I was more than welcome to investigate and join one or start one. This car was purring until this happened and gave absolutely no indication that anything was wrong. I religiously changed the oil every 3,000 miles, which the service
supervisor wasn't happy to hear, because eluded to the fact that so many people didn't change their oil which created sludge in the engine. I am now stuck with a car that is worthless, ( according to the supervisor), and owe $3,800 on it. And to make it worse, my extended warranty that I bought ran out a few thousand miles ago.

CAR FAILURE # 468 February 09, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I just bought a used Chrysler Concorde 1998 with a 2.7L engine. Just yesterday, I was driving down the road at 45mph and when I attempted to pass a car, the motor started to knock without warning. I pulled over to the side of the road and the vehicle would not restart for about 15 minutes. I then trailered it home. Now, it will start and run smooth and quiet til about 35K RPM, then the knocking begins. Temp was not high, no indicator lights were on. I dont know if it would be the timing chain or what.

Like all the others that I have read, I too own a 99 Intrepid that fail at 99K to run in Nov. 2004. This vehicle was used in police service and I took it to Pep Boys in NC for a routine oil change. I did request that they use a heavy weight motor oil due to the type of service it was use for. I started to complaint process with Pep Boys and they gave the run around. However they did contact an adjuster to look at my vehicle. I sent it to Crown Dodge in NC because it is one of their POS and they needed to look at it. I then was notified that because was recommended to use a 5w 30 oil that I have to repair this vehicle and my police department will foot the bill. I took the family down to the NC beaches the last week of July 04 for a vacation, and when I got there the oil light began to flicker. I checked the oil and it was 1/2 qt. low. I went to put oil in and the light stayed on from that point on. The engine began to knock and lose power less than a month later, the trans. stopped shifting and I took it to a trans. shop they put 2 sensors on it and cost to me was $150.00. I have to admit that the car is now paid for as of Feb.2005 but it is still at the Dodge dealership and I will be picking it up on tomorrow, towing it should I say. Yes I want in on this lawsuit and I am waiting for Greensboro Police Department and Guilford County Sheriff's Dept. start having the same problems because they use this type of vehicle as well. Please feel free to contact me with any information.
Thanks,

I own a Dodge Intrepid and on January 24, 2005 the engine failed. It has 115,000 miles on it. My husband, myself and my three year old son were heading home at night and the car failed when we took off from a busy intersection. Thankfully my husband was able to push the car off of the road before an accident occurred. We sat in 20 degree weather with a terrified, crying little boy for one hour waiting for help to take us and the car home.

I am unfortunately new to this site. I have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid and just recevied the news that I too have sludge...and now risk my engine blowing up! (59,000 miles). How would you suggest I address this problem? Get rid of my car and take the loss before it blows?? and/or approach Chrysler, because I will be taking a huge loss!!! Please advise! Thank you!!

CAR FAILURE # 464 February 08, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My 1998 Intrepid with the 2.7 liter engine and 82,000 miles on recently failed while being driven. The week of January 17-22, the heater had been working only intermittently. Pep Boys claimed that the radiator was leaking and replaced it at a cost of $450. I had checked the coolant levels several times and the recovery tank was always at the full mark, but they claimed that their pressure test indicated a leak. I was skeptical, since the heater did work sometimes, but told them to go ahead with the replacement. For the record, at no time did the engine temperature gauge indicate a higher temperature than normal. On Saturday, January 29th, the engine began stalling at red lights, with the engine idling very roughly. A tapping, seemly coming from the left side valve area, was heard. The next day, my son was driving and said the check engine light came on. He pulled it off the road and shut the engine down. When we tried to start it later, it would not start and need towed. The Dodge mechanic replaced the camshaft position sensor at a cost of $187. When I picked up the car on Tuesday, February 1, I still could hear the tapping. Within 5 miles, the stalling became evident again. The car went back to the dealer, where the dealer then diagnosed that it was a lower end problem in the engine and the engine would need replaced at a cost of $6500. The dealer claims that an oil flow restriction probably caused the problem, with the low oil allowing the timing chain to loosen and allow the problem to occur. I always check the oil level at every fill, keeping it between the marks. Of course the dealer won’t refund the $187, since they claim that they got the car started when it wouldn’t start. How the mechanic could not have heard the tapping is beyond me, since it was plainly evident to my untrained ear. After talking to several local shops, I finally found one that would work on this engine. One shop told me that the engine was a nightmare and they wouldn’t work on it, and they do work on race cars and their engines. I am currently having a used 2.7 liter engine with 42,000+ miles on it installed at a cost of $3600+. This shop does a lot of these engines and claims that Chrysler improved the oil flow in 2002 and up 2.7 liter engines. They say it wasn’t a fix, only an improvement. They will only install one of the newer engines. This failure seems to fit those listed on the web page, and I don’t feel that I got my money’s worth from this vehicle. Let me know if there is anything else you need, or where I can turn for help.
Thanks!

We have a 2002 Dodge Intreped with 63,000 miles in excellent shape. Last week, the engine blew and when we checked the oil pan, there was sludge build up. We change the oil regularly and maintain our vehicle. Our vehicle is sitting at the service department and awaiting repair. I have hear many people say the engine is covered under there warranty. I need to know that this will also. Please email me back as soon as possible.

CAR FAILURE # 462 February 08, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
In October of 2003 my 2 year old Concorde LE with 112,000 km began making intermittent noises that sounded like something was loose under the hood. I immediately consulted with the Chrysler dealer where it was purchased new, and they revealed a tensioner arm problem and sludge in the engine. They put the blame on my shoulders suggesting that I hadn't changed the oil on a regular basis. The dealers tech advisor made a recommendation to have the engine flushed and suggested I bring the car back in the following week for maintenance on the tensioner arm. And hopefully I wouldn't need a new engine.  While out of town that weekend, the engine blew and seized. I had it towed to the nearest Chrysler dealer and had a rebuilt engine installed at $6500.00 Canadian. When I picked up the car, I reviewed the maintenance schedule for oil changes and was advised by this dealers' mechanic not to follow the schedule in the warranty book, but in fact, to change the oil every 3,000 km instead of the 5,000 km Chrysler recommended. Neither Chrysler Canada nor the dealer where I purchased the vehicle we're willing to admit the engine had a severe design problem or even come to the table with any help whatsoever. It's now almost a year and a half and a lot of oil changes (20 to be exact). I've put 60,000 km on the new rebuilt engine and had the oil changed today Feb 7 - No, Chysler doesn't do this work for me - To my amazement I noticed the slug problem coming back. Also to my amazement I was shown a tech report from Chrylser at the oil changer( dated November 2004) indicating that the 2.7 litre engine is problematice in a number of areas, something Chrysler vehemently denied when I first
attemped to discuss this situation with them. Chrysler keeps sending direct mail telling me what a good customer I am. What they can't seem to understand is that after 15 years and 4 Chrylers. I'm still a good customer, only I'm not be theirs anymore. Fun when you're told to shut up and go away you do. And you take your money and friends with you. If you can run a company without customers and make a profit I haven't seen one. Neither have the few hundred or so people I've talked with who'll think twice before buying a Chrysler. Oh they might not go belly up, but they'll spend a lot more to entice new customers. More than they'd have to, to keep the loyal ones.
