CAR FAILURE # 1,147 Sept. 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 liter with 61,374 miles. I have always used
Mobile One Synthetic oil with a Mobile One 5 micron filter. I also change the
PCV every time I change oil which was every 3,000 religiously. I am 43 years old
and my Hot Roding is long done. I was driving the Intrepid going 25 MPH and it
just died. The timing chain seized up and parts of metal went all through the
engine. I car is in perfect condition but is only worth $3800 (assuming it has a
functional engine). The estimate to repair is $6,500. The Dodge dealership knew
what the problem was before I towed it into their garage. I asked why this was
not a recall item and they stated it was not a safety issue. I will never
purchase a Dodge product nor will my family ever again. I will be taking this
auto to the junk yard where I have arranged to have it crushed by their machine
and I will be the one operating it. It will be the only therapy for me but at
least it will make me feel better by completely eliminating another dodge from
our great nation’s roads. - Todd N.
CAR FAILURE # 1,146 Sept. 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I also believe that the engine failures aren't just in the 2.7l because I
Recently bought a 1998 dodge stratus with a 2.4l with just under 91,000 Miles
and ticking and knocking noises seem to be coming from the engine. Sludge
also seemed to be in my oil. I have found that this site has been Very
informative and I will tell everyone not to buy a dodge or Chrysler Product.
CAR FAILURE # 1,145 Sept. 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Saw your sight and thought I would let you know I'm also the proud owner of
a 1999 dodge intrepid es.. with a fouled engine.. Just looking for more info on
what I can do.

CAR FAILURE # 1,144 Sept. 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My story is similar to most of the postings on this board. One day I am
driving my 2000 Intrepid, a car that I quite enjoy. It had just received its
100,000 kilometer checkup. No problems, no warnings from the dealership. Shortly
after the checkup there is a loss of heat and a clicking noise coming from the
engine. I took it in to the dealership that has done all of the work on the car
since I bought it. They called me back to say that the timing chain had snapped
while it was in the shop and that I need a new engine. Cost of $7200.00
Canadian. Chrysler Canada is totally uncooperative. Apparently they have never
heard of this problem before - Bill G.
CAR FAILURE # 1,143 Sept. 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Hi, How heartbreaking to read all this information. I purchased my 2001
intrepid in 2002 after a serious car accident. I felt it would be a safe car,
and I trusted the dodge name. My husband and I are both out of work due to
medical conditions and we relied on our transportation to take us many miles to
doctors appointments across our state. We took good care of the car, changing
the oil and keeping up with maintenance. We had no sign that anything was wrong.
The engine just died. No clanking noise, no oil light, nothing, it just quit and
we had to get out of busy traffic and get to the side of the road. When we tried
to start it, the car just made a clicking sound, but never turned over. It cost
us 125.00 to tow to our mechanic. He could not believe what he saw when he
opened the engine. The sludge was terrible. It looked like an old car that had
never been maintained. Doing our own maintenance, I felt so defensive. He told
us that dodge wouldn't even listen to us without detailed maintenance records
from a shop and even if we had that, they probably still wouldn't listen.
The cost to replace the engine is 4,500, and given our current financial
situation, we cannot afford that. I'm not sure what we'll do, I guess try to
sell it for salvage and buy a beater car until we can afford another one. Shame
on dodge ... I heard they back up their Mercedes engines, yet those owners can
afford to replace their engines, why make the less fortunate suffer?

CAR FAILURE # 1,142 Sept. 19, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought a 2000 Chrysler Concorde in 2004.It had only 47000 miles on it now
it has 54000 on it and the lifters stuck and a valve bent in it. Now I find out
a used engine with 70000 miles on it will cost me $2400 for just the engine, a
rebuilt engine with the defects fixed will cost $3800.What can I do? This to me
is really expensive for just the engine. What is Chrysler doing about this? What
can I do about this?
CAR FAILURE # 1,141 Sept. 19, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure Pending?
I have a 2004 Concorde and it has started giving me a hard time while
driving. At about 30 miles it stops and when turned back on it jumps at 30 and
70 miles. I have had my oil changed on time. We are at about 40,000. miles. It
sometimes won't start at all. We believe that has something to do with the key
system. If you can offer us any help it would be appreciated. - Regenia T.
CAR FAILURE # 1,140 Sept. 19, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 2001 Dodge Intrepid that turned just over 74,000 miles, and started
to make an awful lot of noise after an oil change. It sounds like something
broke inside the engine. I was very interested in the website concerning the
problems with the Dodge Intrepid, and wanted to let you know. Currently, this
vehicle is in the shop to find out exactly what the problem is, but I’m afraid
that I will hear the worst. - Thank you, Paul R.
CAR FAILURE # 1,139 Sept. 18, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Of many problems with my 2002 dodge intrepid, the final straw was an engine
that sounds like a thrasher...very loud and engine light on... this came very
soon after rebuilding the transmission (my understanding is that they were
backordered by hundreds on the cyloniod (not sure how to spell it) kit for this
transmission. Before that I had replaced 2 cooling fans... Then engine gave way
on the interstate and thankfully I was able to limp to an exit. When the
transmission went into low gear, thankfully I was able to do the same... Right
now I have a 2002 dodge that I owe thousands on that is sitting in my drive...
causing me to lost much work and much income, in addition to the strain on the
budget and the constant calls from Chrysler financial... Please let me know if
there is anything I can do, THANK YOU - Roger
CAR FAILURE # 1,138 Sept. 18, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We own a 2001 Intrepid. Our first motor went at 83,000 miles and
subsequently found out that our extended warranty through Triad went belly up.
Our dealer took it upon themselves to install another motor (minus our
deductible), a 58,000 mile motor from the junkyard and this one lasted 5 weeks.
We will take delivery again tomorrow from the dealership with its third motor
with no idea of its mileage. This is a big scam upon the American people and
everyone should be made aware of it including the extended warranty companies
who took the money and ran. - Clifford B.

Yes I to am the owner of a 1999 dodge intrepid....the engine is blown. No
mechanic will touch it......57,000 miles on it. I can't afford to buy a new
engine, so it sits idle. The famous 2.7 liter. Beautiful car and it doesn't
run......Tina Still making payments on it.........
CAR FAILURE # 1,136 Sept. 17, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure Pending
I recently bought a used 1999 Dodge Intrepid. Everyone, even a trusted
mechanic, said it was a solid vehicle, so I was initially very pleased with my
purchase. Now, I'm getting close to 100,000 miles and suddenly I'm leaving
plumes of smoke every time I step on the gas. The mechanic looks up in his
system and finds, low and behold, that my 2.7 liter engine is plagued with all
kinds of problems. Well, isn't that a find kettle of fish. He says there
is nothing I can do, and that the sludge build-up will eventually cause the
engine to fail catastrophically. <sigh> At least it is still drivable for now.
Any help on preventing or somehow mitigating the problem? Mike N.
CAR FAILURE # 1,135 Sept. 16, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I am emailing you, per your request, due the recent failure of my 2001
leased Dodge Intrepid (2.7L). My engine failed with 70K miles while I was
driving in New Philadelphia, OH. I presented all service records to the dealer
(Nelson Auto - Marysville, OH) and they gave them to the factory rep for review.
The called back and said that they we not going to give me any assistance. They
gave no specific reason, but said it had excessive miles and wasn't serviced at
a "Dodge" dealership each time. I didn't realize 70K was excessive or having the
oil changed at a Dodge dealership was mandatory.
This car is a safety risk and a hazard to everyone who owns one and to their
checkbooks. I think a major investigation needs to be down on the whole
situation. After reading your site and several others, it appears I am not the
only one with the same experience. Please call me or let me know if you
need more info. ps If you have a class action lawsuit started,
please advise on how I can get on the list. - Thanks Mike
CAR FAILURE # 1,134 Sept. 16, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
On August 18th of 2005 I was driving my car and lost all power. I had the
car towed by AAA to a garage. They said the engine has ceased due to lack of
oil. They said they could see a trail of oil on the undercarriage of the car.
I use this car for work and travel quite a lot of miles a year. I always
have the oil changed every 3,000 miles. There are no oil spots on my driveway to
indicate a leak. The garage said it looked like the oil was
leaking as the car was being driven. I have filed a complaint with the NHTSA. -

CAR FAILURE # 1,133 Sept. 15, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
read most of the website regarding the ’98 Chrysler Concorde 2.7L
engine. My sister-in-law was told her timing chain needed replaced, but after
close inspection – it was actually the engine had blown. I’m so aggravated that
they are allowing dealers to sell these as used cars knowing FULL WELL that they
are lemons. A poorly engineered engine!!! She unfortunately is financially
strapped and is now without a vehicle. Please let me know what else to do to
receive some sort of compensation. We just want things to be made right.
Thanks…Ann B

My engine died while I was making a turn in my city. it freaked me out.
after I restarted it there was this LOUD knocking sound in the engine. I figured
its the rod but it hasn't actually broke, YET. its parked and now I pay for a
car I can't use.

Well, I have 1999 Dodge Intrepid and the motor lock up at 106,000. So, I
think that I was lucky compared to other owners of Intrepid. The 2.7 liter
motor is just worthless and Dodge should recall all and refund our money.
This is truly a shame when a product is no good and no one does anything
about it. - Javance
CAR FAILURE # 1,130 Sept. 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We are being told we need a new engine in our 2000 Dodge Intrepid and even
though we have a warranty Chrysler is not honoring it as they say we don’t have
PROOF of oil changes. We have maintained our car and had regular oil changes but
don’t have proof. Why should be have to prove this? We have a warranty and it is
the problem with the engine- not with our car care. We are very frustrated.

CAR FAILURE # 1,129 Sept. 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We purchased a 2002 Chrysler Intrepid 2 years ago. It was started last
winter and dumped oil all over the driveway. I was quoted 1700.00 to fix it. Two
nights ago I lost the transmission. Another 2000.00 including tax. the car has
130,000 kms. This car is definitely a lemon, Chrysler will do nothing to even
help with the problems. It's 30,000 over there warranty, but still such a young
car to have these problems. Is there any thing I can do? We share a car so we
are stuck. We bought this newer car to avoid this situation. Thanks for your
time
CAR FAILURE # 1,128 Sept. 14, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Chrysler Concord engine seize(1999) after an oil charge. I got the oil
change on Saturday and Monday my car engine was knocking and by the end of the
week, the car was seating in my drive way with a knocked engine. I only had this
car for 3 months and this is a very bad car. Its nice looking, interior is
specious but the engine it self is useless and I would not recommend this car to
anyone unless Chrysler comes up with a back up plan for this mess. Thanks -

I have a 1999 dodge intrepid and when I changed the oil a couple of weeks
ago the oil wouldn't even come out when I took the plug out. It eventually did
and took over a half hour to drain it was so thick. That oil only had 3000 miles
on it and since new has been changed every 3000 miles and the car has only 51000
miles on it. Since then the engine has developed a ticking noise and the
oil light flickers at engine idle. I have read about this engine and I am afraid
that the engine will blow before long. Any suggestions what i should do? Car is
way out of warranty. Also the door locks won't work and make a funny noise which
I have heard many Intrepids doing the same thing. Thanks, Stephen M.
CAR FAILURE # 1,126 Sept. 13, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My car died coming off of a very busy highway last Tuesday the 6th of
September. It gave no inclination that it was about to die. My oil light came
on, and in a blink of an eye (seriously a blink of an eye) when I stepped on the
gas to go, it was dead. I had someone look at it, I had absolutely no oil in my
car. I have my oil changed pretty regularly. Last year my air conditioning also
went out on my car. The locks do not work properly either. I am very upset
due to the fact this is my only mode of transportation. - Thank you for your
time - Sincerely Sheri L.

I'm not sure if you are still following this, but I purchased my 2001 Dodge
Intrepid a couple years ago after a car accident. I thought it had a good safety
rating, and I felt more comfortable in a bigger car (had a Ford Contour). I have
to say, I did not have much to complain about, besides the strange rear window
that was sometimes difficult to see out of when backing up. Then last month when
we changed the oil, I noticed it was a little thicker than usual. The car was
running fine and continued to run fine after the oil change, no lights came on,
I didn't think there was a problem. A couple days ago, as I was driving on a
major highway at approximately 50 - 55 MPH, the engine just died. I managed to
get it off the road, but I was quite rattled. When I went to turn the engine
over, it just made a single click sound. I opened the hood and looked at the
engine, there was no foul odor, nothing smoking, but I checked the oil and it
was like sludge. I have no idea how it became like this so quickly, we take good
care of this car. I have a 2000 dodge intrepid with a bad engine and it has been
sitting in my driveway for about 6 months because I cant afford to fix it. I
just stumbled across this web site and now I'm learning that this engine was
destine to fail. Do I have any recourse with dodge or have they agreed to do
anything about the problem. I would like to get more information on this 2.7
litre dodge and what dodge is willing to do about it. - Thank you Carl C
CAR FAILURE # 1,123 Sept. 10, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
After a $115.00 tow to my mechanic, he took a look and shook his head. The
engine seized. He said he would really look it over, but it was late on
Friday, and he won't get around to that until Monday. I don't know what to do at
this point. My husband and I are both out on medical disabilities
from work, our car was paid off, there is no way we can afford to replace the
engine, or start all over again. I just don't understand how there was no
warning whatsoever. It was driving fine, sounded fine, and then it just shut
down. I had similar problems with my Ford Taurus years ago. The rack and pinion
went and no one wanted to listen to me even though there were numerous identical
complaints on the National Highway Safety web site...according to Ford, this was
not a problem. Granted, I could afford to repair the rack and pinion, but a
whole engine...no way. I'm so disappointed and overwhelmed. We sink so much
money into these vehicles, we should be able to expect them to last. If I have
to buy another car, I will only buy an old bomber. I will only drive in
emergencies, and when it dies...I won't be so heart broken. What do you suggest
I do? - Suzanne
CAR FAILURE # 1,122 Sept. 10, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Transmission Failure
Hurray! Today we traded our "01" Chrysler 300M in for a Nissan Murano. Our
300M only had 65,000 miles on it last May when the transmission had to be
replaced. We just did not trust the car. We loved the lines, the ride was
comfortable, but when you feel the car is going to let you down again, it is
time to get rid of it and why in the world would one buy another Chrysler
product. After reading all the other E-mails about malfunctioning Chrysler
products I wonder why anyone would buy Jeep, Dodge, Plymouth etc...Wake up
America...American cars are made with foreign parts. Foreign cars are assembled
right here in America by members of the UAW...Tess G from Pa.

CAR FAILURE # 1,118 Sept. 09, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I came across your website and will be following your recommendations. I
have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with the now infamous 2.7 engine. I bought the car
used from a dealership 2 years ago. The car had 69,000 miles on it when it shut
down "blow Up" when my wife and two small children were driving the car. The
verdict "Sludge Build Up" and the result was me having to foot the 4500 bill to
rebuild the engine. I was religious in changing the oil in this car every 3000
miles or three months. This is the first car I have every owned that I had a car
payment on and so I babied the car. Even had the transmission completely
services (never done this before) I checked the car's oil and fluids before I
went out of town on a business trip and left the car with my wife three days
later she called me in a panic about the car. In the process of getting the car
fixed (6 weeks to find someone willing to work on the 2.7) We had to rely on my
1993 Ford Van with 165,000 miles on it. Still no problems with that vehicle.
Here Is my information please send me any information you might have about how
to get the company to help pay my bill to the following information.
Unfortunately, I had to re-mortgage my house to cover this expense for a car I
am still upside down in because of the reputation. William L.
CAR FAILURE # 1,117 Sept. 09, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My engine failed while driving across a bridge full of traffic. My Dodge
Intrepid is a 1999 with the 2.7 liter engine. We went to the dealership to find
out about the oil pump, they told us that the oil has to be changed every 3000
miles on point and use 5w30 oil. We never thought any thing else about it until
we started checking around for a new engine and ran across a lot of people with
the same problem . In my town, I know at least about 60 or 70 people with the
exact same issue with their Intrepid. My sister is one of them .
CAR FAILURE # 1,116 Sept. 08, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with a blown engine. The engine seized on me at
very busy intersection, thankfully I was stopped at a red light because I had my
two children with me and there was heavy traffic. My vehicle only had 59000
miles on it and was just a few thousand miles out of warranty. As I can see from
all of the other complaints there looks like there is no hope for us
Dodge/Chrysler owners. After paying a Dodge dealership 16000.00 cash for this
vehicle I guess I'm stuck with a pretty expensive lawn ornament. - Trina V.
CAR FAILURE # 1,115 Sept. 08, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought a used intrepid in February. It only had 50000 miles on it. Last
week, on my way to work, my car started knocking very loud. I've had my oil
changed 4 times since I've had my car. I have a warranty with Wynn's and they
want my mechanic to take my car apart piece by piece until they find the
problem. If they find sludge then they do not cover my car. What am I supposed
to do?
CAR FAILURE # 1,114 Sept. 07, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought a 2001 model Dodge Durango sports with 93000 miles. The car was
just like new. After a few days while I was driving on a highway the engine
stopped suddenly. I called my mechanic and checked the engine. The engine was
completely failed and need to be replaced. I have never seen in my life ,an
engine is failing completely like this. I have one request for the
Chrysler/Dodge company ,please don't cheat the customers like this. If the your
engine is failed very early it is their responsibility to replace the engine
free of cost. Instead of that you escape saying that 'poor maintenance'. of the
car. I have spent $8500 for replacing the engine. Actuality this company has to
reimburse this money because it is their mistake.
CAR FAILURE # 1,113 Sept. 07, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Transmission Failure
I have forwarded the following complaint to Chrysler regarding my 2002
Concord. This model has transmission problems. - “My transmission is in
need of a major repair regarding the web gears and in the amount of @$810.00.
This transmission has had problems since I purchased the car new. A coolant line
to the trans blew off under extreme pressure when the car has less than 5000
miles. The transmission has leaked fluid ever since to some degree. I did not
have it repaired as I felt the trans might be bleeding pressure and a fix could
cause another blow-out of a line at an inopportune moment. I was not given a
conclusive cause by my local dealership and told to watch while under warranty.
Well that worked out pretty well.....For CHRYSLER. I traded my Mercedes for this
Car, the benz had @ 425,000 miles on it. I do not expect Chrysler to bear the
full expense of this repair. I do however feel that there is a design flaw in
the 02 concord transmission and that you should at least bear some of the
expense. Thanks in advance for you help regarding this matter. - Jack P."

Hi, I just bought a dodge intrepid about 3 months ago. Monday morning 8/5/05
I went to the grocery store. The car has been running fine. When I came out of
the store it wouldn't start. It just made a clicking noise. We thought it was
the starter, so I bought a new starter and replaced it yesterday. I still will
not start. It makes the same noise as it did. Can you help?

Same story - 1998 -Intrepid second family car Well maintained - Decided to
blow up one day without notice - Timing chain - Had only 125,000 kms. or
approx.70,000 miles My bicycle has more miles on it . Car looks great but not
worth repairing . Even the wreckers want $2500.00 for an engine, reason supply
and demand. Chrysler dealership wants close to $7000.00 installed with no
guarantees . Chrysler head office said sorry about your luck and no we have no
knowledge of any problems with the 2.7 L engine you are just unfortunate any one
who states otherwise are . QUOTE: failure is an isolated incident that is not
indicative of a part design problem As for forums like this QUOTE: not in any
way responsible for incorrect, incomplete or unfounded information published by
independent sources. Now this is a company you want to do business with!
What bothers me is that the Big C would not even give me the time of day. Been a
Chrysler owner for 30 years. Was not asking for a new car just some form of
compensation for the purchase or leasing of an other Chrysler product. Not even
a chance. So I went out and bought another car not a Chrysler . It is
interesting , I am now 52 with 3 kids I have gone and purchased a foreign car .
My 3 neighbors all Chrysler men for many years have gone out and purchased
Toyotas and/or Hondas. Some may say they are old farts how many more cars are
they going to buy. Interesting point is that it was their kids who have been
wanting and pushing them to purchase as they call them a reliable car . As the
population ages we all are looking for reliability . By the way all their kids
own foreign cars. Chrysler has no concern for their reputation They would rather
spend $10.00 trying to find new customers than spending $2 to keep them ones
they have. They will never omit to any error WHY because it is not a safety
issue The problem only occurs when you come to a stop No one has died no bad
publicity no pressure to bend. We are individuals with a common problem we do
not have the ability to unite We need to come together to gather information on
the numbers of faulty vehicles and for getting statements from Chrysler
mechanics etc. This is morally and ethically wrong . The only way to fight it
now is buy another type of vehicle that is proven and not one that just looks
good What goes around comes around . If any one knows of a group in Canada that
is leading the charge please inform Just venting will not solve anything .
CAR FAILURE # 1,110 Sept. 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I just read on your website the compiled info on 2001 Dodge bad engines. Oh,
that I had read this sooner. Yesterday, out of the blue while driving on the
Interstate, my check engine light came on. Within a few miles, before we could
pull off at the next exit, it started shuddering. It died on the exit ramp and
wouldn't start again. We had it towed to the nearest mechanic which,
coincidentally was a Dodge dealership. They told us today that the engine was
shot, it had NO oil in it and would cost $7,000 to replace, more than the value
of the car. It is impossible that it had no oil in it. It's had regular oil
changes and I've been driving it regularly. The check oil light NEVER came on,
the engine heat was within normal and there were NO OIL SPOTS in my driveway. I
really think I'm being ripped off here. Is there no recourse? Is there a class
action lawsuit going? Can you tell me something good??? - Tangee F.

CAR FAILURE # 1,109 Sept. 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure Pending
We new nothing about the 2.7 liter engine problems when we bought the car.
It ran Fine for a while but now she is having problems. We always had the
oil changed ever 3,000 miles. The oil pan gasket now has begin to leak the
Oil Pressure switch is also leaking oil. They want around $ 200 to fix
these two problems. Now for the new defect the Upper Coolent Outlet is
Failing and has began to leak. The dealer says all of these Coolent
outlets will all fail and will leak. They want $ $93.00 for the Part and
say the repair will cost about $200.00 to $300.00. The Dodge Part number
is 5017183AA per the Chrysler Dealer. I checked around and it seems there
is no aftermarket part for this item. The car only has about 73,000 miles
on it. Now it looks like things are going downhill on this one.

CAR FAILURE # 1,108 Sept. 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 2000 Concorde with 67000 miles. Last week the engine locked up
while driving to church. The dealer said it was going to cost me $6300.00 to
replace the 2.7L engine. I never realized this was a problem with the 2.7L
engine until I found this web site and did some more searching about it. Thanks
for the info..
CAR FAILURE # 1,107 Sept. 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure

back from I trip to Ft. Lauderdale on labor day without warning the just broke
down on the fl. turnpike. the person that towed me said that the timing chain
probably went. I have been purchasing vehicles for 40 years & always change my
oil faithfully as well as other maintenance. I am still making payments on this
vehicle through I finance company & have no other vehicle to go to work. any
suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
thank you. - Philip O.
CAR FAILURE # 1,106 Sept. 06, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We have owned a 2000 Dodge Intrepid for the last 4 years. We bought it from
the dealer with around 16,000 miles on it. It was used by the dealer as one of
the Sales Manager's car. I fell in love with the car the first time I drove it.
It was big enough for our family of five but, still sporty enough for Dad to
have some fun driving it. We have always had the oil changed and the car
serviced at the same dealer we got it from. They took very good care of us.
Around 70,000 miles the check engine light came on at the same time we noticed
an oil leak. They changed the oil sending unit and said it would be fine. About
3 days later the check engine light came back on. The service man said it was
some kind of vacuum leak. After several test they could not find the leak. They
would always reset the check engine light and a couple of days later it would
come on again. This went on several times with out them finding anything wrong.
We put a new gas cap on it, they ran die test, smoke test every kind of test
but, could not tell us what was wrong. We kept on driving it with the light on
with their assurance that it was something minor. With about 112,000 miles on it
the engine blew. I have never taken such good care of any other car I have ever
owned. I really had planned on keeping this car for a long time as it was still
fun to drive. I love all the new designs that Dodge has come out, like the
Charger and Magnum. I just can't convince myself that Chrysler has solved all
their engine problems. I will probably go back to an import car. So much for buy

CAR FAILURE # 1,105 Sept. 05, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I am e-mailing you in reference to my 2000 Dodge Intrepid. I have about
60,000 miles (and 7 payments) on it when it died while I was driving it. I had
taken it to the dealership because I heard a slight ticking noise and they said
it needed an oil flush. When they finished it they still weren’t sure what the
problem was and wanted to pull the engine. I told them I would have to take it
back later. I drove about 1 mile away from the dealership when the check engine
light came on and it died. I called the dealership and they had it towed so that
they could check it out. They then said they only way they could determine what
the problem was to pull the engine and that would cost me about 400.00 just to
pull the engine. I had another mechanic look at it and he couldn’t believe how
bad the engine was and said he didn’t feel right fixing it because there is some
serious damage. He said I can put on a new timing chain and flush it but it
doesn’t mean that is going to fix the problem. Then I started researching the
web for complaints, I could not believe what I found. I am 35 years old trying
to go back to school full time, I have 4 kids and live on a very tight income.
To fix this car is more than I can afford. When the dealership first discovered
the problem their solution was to trade it in for a newer car and they would
take mine of my hands. Of course they weren’t going to give me much for my car
because it wasn’t running. I am so disgusted with Dodge I now tell everyone I
see with an intrepid to get rid of it before the same think happens to them.

CAR FAILURE # 1,104 Sept. 05, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Hi. My 2000 Dodge Intrepid blew its engine while driving it. It had under
80,000 miles on it and had been perfectly maintained. It has the 2.7 litre
engine in it that I now see on the web is full of defects. I owe $8,000 on a
vehicle I can't drive, trade in, or even junk! Since the lender still "owns"
the vehicle, I don't have the option of getting rid of it. There are so many of
us that have had the exact same problem and Chrysler is unwilling to help. For
that matter, they don't even RESPOND! The dealership blames Chrysler but does
nothing. They state that perhaps there weren't enough oil changes (even though
we can document EVERY oil change performed at 3,000 miles). Used auto parts
shops cannot keep the 2.7 litre engine in stock since there are so many folks in
my position desperate to get their Intrepid fixed. Mechanics advise that
there is no guarantee whatsoever that putting a used 2.7 (or a brand new one)
will fix this problem. The next 2.7 could be every bit as defective. Also
while driving this vehicle a short time before
the engine blew, the steering column locked up causing us to swerve into
oncoming traffic. This was a potentially deadly occurrence. $1,800 from the
dealership that we're still paying off to repair that little problem. Please
help!! Thanks.
CAR FAILURE # 1,103 Sept. 05, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My 'Incrapid' started having problems at about 70 some thousand miles
(Shortly after the warranty expired). My mechanic had the car more than I did in
late 2004 to early 2005. I didn't have the money for a new engine and the
mechanic had major problems finding a rebuilt or rebuildable used engine.
Now I'm having tranny probs, I think. Any options for a non-mechanic? - Terry C.

CAR FAILURE # 1,101 Sept. 03, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 1998 dodge intrepid with the 2.7 engine in it. Wednesday the car
run just fine and was running good and Thursday morning I was going down the
road at 4:30 in the morning and it started slowing down and slowed down to 20mph
and then just stopped running and the temp gauge was half way between c and the
half way mark also I have kept it up and kept the oil changed it had 106
thousand miles on it and I had it towed to a shop and he said the motor is
burned up. thank you
CAR FAILURE # 1,100 Sept. 03, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I am also a victim of the dreaded 2.7 liter engine. I have one in my 1999
Dodge Intrepid. I always kept my oil changed and performed very good vehicle
maintenance. One day while at work, the engine of this car started knocking
while my wife was driving and she had to get the car towed home. The car had
just got an oil change 2 weeks prior; but the mechanic who checked it said it
was out of oil at first; then when he rechecked it he said it was full of
sludge-like oil; which caused my engine to throw a rod.
CAR FAILURE # 1,099 Sept. 02, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure?
Here is my story- my oil light has been going off in my 2001 Intrepid SE- no
problems to be found-keep driving-it's safe-mind you, I do have a child and a
husband! Today, while putting the car in drive, it went backwards. I put it in
park, put it in drive again, again, went into reverse. Then the brakes were so
hard that I couldn't stop, so I slammed it into park. What is that??? I drove it
very slowly to the dealer where it was fine, but the service mgr. told me
to "get in it very carefully" if it were possible and to "be careful". ???? I
traded it in for a new 2005 Stratus-was that a mistake? I still have 3 days to
get out of the car. Please advise. Thank You- Angie
CAR FAILURE # 1,098 Sept. 02, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I too have experienced the bad engine in the Dodge Intrepid I been repairing
my car for numerous problems the most recent one when it failed the emission
test. The mechanic showed me the damage in my engine where the spark plugs had
slugged and oil and antifreeze on them which that isn't supposed to happen. I
take good car of my car despite the problems but know I'm told that my car will
need a engine within the year so I better start looking. I'm totally appalled at
Chrysler for building a car that the knew wouldn't last it just looks good. This
is not over I want to start a website so that other owners of these cars can
tell their and maybe we can come together to start a class lawsuit against
Chrysler. - Sincerely, Farnchesca P.
CAR FAILURE # 1,097 Sept. 02, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid I bought a year ago 8/05...... a week ago just
having the car a little over a year. The engine just stopped while driving. The
oil changes were done every 3000 miles. I bought it with 57,922 miles on it now
it has 67,942.... I contacted Chrysler and they won't do a thing. I still owe
almost four years of payment on this. If you can be of any help please
email me.

CAR FAILURE # 1,095 August 31, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I had my Concorde, I bought it used, and the engine failed on my in less
than 3 weeks. And because I just move to Florida from NY, I bought the vehicle
in Florida, I cannot get my money back because there is no state mandated lemon
law on used cars as it is in NY. I tried to do as much research as I could prior
to buying, but I never saw anything about engine failures until it happened to
me. A concerned consumer. - Ebi T.
CAR FAILURE # 1,094 August 31, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I happened upon your website while trying to research some of the problems
with Chrysler engines. I'm not sure if you're still looking for emails from
people with problems, but I thought I'd give it a try to see if you had any
ideas of what can be done as I'm very familiar with Chrysler's ineptness at
helping their customers and I'm not looking forward to calling them tomorrow
only to hear about how I didn't take care of my car.
I have a 2001 Intrepid R/T Motorsport Edition with the 3.5ltr V6. I have
maintained the oil and fluid changes regularly and have never had a problem with
the car. It's kinda funny because I just saw the comment on your website about
how if you see a faint blue smoke from the exhaust of a Chrysler, the engine is
ready to go. I wish I had read that before because about three weeks ago I
actually noticed the slight smoke, but figured it could have been the weather
causing it and I dismissed it. I've never had a problem with the car until this
Friday - I was entering a highway and accelerating and the car suddenly starting
making a "Whooshing" noise - almost like a compressor was going off underneath
the car and then I lost significant power. I pulled the car off the highway and
headed home (about 1mile) when it starting making a noise similar to a rod
knock. I figured there was definitely something wrong, but never expected to
park the car (after it quit when I slowed down) and found there wasn't a drop of
oil in the engine. I ended up putting 5 qts of oil in and drove it home. The car
quieted down, but I was leery and called my Dad over to my house to take a look
at it. When I restarted it, there was the definite sound of a knock and to my
amazement, all of the lifters had already collapsed. The car is so bad that I
probably won't be able to make it to the end of the block before it complete
seizes. I know Chrysler has a power train warranty, but I'm not sure if it will
cover my car with 69k miles on it - even if it qualifies, I know Chrysler's
reputation and I figure I'm pretty much out of luck. What's most upsetting is
that I've taken care of this car like no other and there's not even 70k on it
and it's engine has been rendered useless. I just wanted to give you my
story and see if you happen to have any ideas about what I can do. Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch! - Patrick
CAR FAILURE # 1,093 August 30, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We own a 1999 Dodge Intrepid, with 60,000 miles on it. We took it to the
dealer for a tune up, a 60,000 mile check-up an oil change on
Friday 8/26. The car was returned to us Sat 8/27 and then not driven until
Monday 8/29. On the way home from work on 8/29, while on the
freeway, the car began to lose power and the engine started making a loud
banging sound. I managed to get off the freeway, scared to death
and get the car home. The car was towed backed to the dealer who is now telling
us that there may be "catastrophic" damage to the engine
because of sludge build up. We changed the oil on schedule but not always at the
dealer. The dealer is claiming that because we took it
to Jiffy Lube on occasion and they use Penzoil that has led to sludge build up
and may have caused the engine failure. I was lucky to not have my two
children in the car and to get off the freeway and make it slowly home. If there
was a problem, why didn't the dealer catch it 2 days earlier when they did a
full 60,000 mile inspection on the car? - Nancy W

Hey I'm not a Chrysler concord owner but I am a 03 Chrysler Sebring owner
with a 2.7L engine and it just seized on me while on the highway, turns out that
a rod barring spun in the engine completely totaling the engine and from what
I'm told the water pump and a few more components need to be replace because of
the engine, got word from the mechanic at the dealership and there was no build
up in the engine the oil was well maintained but he's unable to determine what
the cause was to me it’s a faulty engine to begin with but I contacted Chrysler
I'm just past my warranty by 8,000 mile the cost of repair is $6,758.69, and
they only will pay 50% and contacted the dealer and to no surprise they aren't
going to do a thing. and still don’t know where to get the rest of the repair
bill but just wanted to make that known.

I have a serious issue concerning my Chrysler Intrepid 2000 2.7L engine. I
must have my engine rebuilt for $5000 canadian. The company who will be
rebuilding my engine has an average of 45 2.7 engines a year to rebuild.
Chrysler told me that the warranty is finish and they are not responsible.
Please let me know what I can do legally.

CAR FAILURE # 1,090 August 30, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I am a single mother with two small children. I have a fixed income and
bought this car because the safety rating was high. I got the car with a high
interest rate, but thought that it would be worth it because I would drive it
for the next 10 years or so. Boy was I wrong! I bought a 2002 Dodge Intrepid in
December of 2002; it had 22,080 miles on it. It was still under factory
warranty. The vehicle started over heating less than three months after I bought
it. I took it to the shop six times and they could not get it to duplicate.
Finally, one of the dealerships found an unplugged fan and said that was the
problem. Summer was over, so I had no more over heating problems. When
summer came back, the air conditioner wouldn’t run cold; I took the car to the
shop again and the thermostat was broken. They fixed it, and gave me a $400.00
bill, the factory warranty was gone and the extended warranty did not cover the
thermostat. Last month my Cam timing sensor went out. My mechanic replaced it.
Two weeks ago, my car, now at 64,000 miles, started banging and then died. My
engine is blown. Oil sludge caused it to blow. I got all of my oil changes done
on time and still, I have a car that I still owe 14,000.00 dollars on, that sits
in a parking space. I could pay $2500.00 to get a new engine and $1000.00 to put
it in, but I don’t have that kind of money! Now, in 113 degree weather, I am
taking my kids to preschool on the bus, going to work on the bus, and begging
for rides to get groceries! Dodge should be held responsible for selling me a
car that can’t make it past 64000 miles.
CAR FAILURE # 1,089 August 30, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My name is Dana W. I am a single Mom with two children, just recently my 2.7
liter engine on my 2000 concord went bad. The car is no longer drivable and
barely five years old I'm still making payments on the vehicle. I was told by
the Chrysler/jeep dealer in Nashville that the price of a new engine would cost
$5000 dollars and being a single Mom of two it would take about two or three
years to save to get the engine replaced. after reading all the bad reports on
the engine you would think someone would do something about this problem. I just
pray that this problem will be resolve very soon and my deepest regrets goes out
to all the people who have to suffer through this awful mistake made on
Chryslers behalf.
CAR FAILURE # 1,088 August 28, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I purchased a 2005 Chrysler Sebring last year with 10,000.00 on it. Two days
later my engine light came on, I took it to the dealership and they stated the
gas cap was not properly closed. The next day the engine light comes on again,
and they reset it, stating there was nothing wrong with my car. About a week
later I am driving down the road and my car started smelling gas. I immediately
stop by the dealership and they informed me the car had a gas leak. Within a
month the engine light came on 7 times. Now last month the light started going
on again 5 times so far, they have replaced the cam sensors, the gas cap and the
light is on at this present time. So I have to take it AGAIN to the dealership
tomorrow and they have just informed me the warranty is almost expired. I have
spoken and written several complaint letters to Chrysler Corporate Office as
well as the dealership and no one seems to care. I am extremely upset, I have no
equity on my car and no one seems to help. Do you think anyone could help me and
all the other customers?

CAR FAILURE # 1,087 August 28, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I was driving my 2001 concord down the road and the car just quit no check
engine light no nothing. I had the car towed to two repair shops because I could
not believe that the engine was no good at 40,000 miles. The repair shops told
me that all that was in the oil pan was sludge. I still owe $8500.00 on the car
and it is going to take $3800 to over $6000.00 to repair it and it will more
then likely happen again. - Staci
CAR FAILURE # 1,086 August 27, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have owned 2 dodge Intrepids since 2000, my 2001 Intrepid engine blew
about 2 months ago with only 86,000 miles and I always kept the oil changed and
everything serviced. I still owed $4,000 on the car, and it would have
cost more than $5,000 to put another engine in it. The car was like new except
no engine, could not sell it and finally sold it to a salvage yard for $600
dollars. Needless to say I took a big loss on the car. And now worried that my
other Intrepid will do the same thing. - Russell C.

My 2001 Chrysler Concorde with a 2.7L engine has died on me. I was going to
take the car in for a tune up when it would not start. I then took the car into
a dealership and I had to get the cam shaft sensors replaced. Then he told me
that there was a bent rod in the motor and the engine will need replacing. The
total cost of all of the repairs will be about $7000. All of this happened
around Aug. 12th, 2005.

CAR FAILURE # 1,082 August 27, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Last Saturday my friend and I were driving back from Jackson, TN on I-40
west when the engine started knocking heavily. I was about 1,500 feet from a
rest area when the engine quit. Luckily, we were coasting fast enough to safely
get off of the interstate. We called a tow truck from Memphis to come get us and
take us on home. Currently my car is at the dealership and they're waiting on me
to give word on what to do next. Obviously, I'm in the process of doing research
and found you website. At first, I dropped my car off at an independent repair
shop and they told me there what a lemon this engine is. I am within about 800
miles of my extended warranty expiring that I purchased from the dealership
where the car is now. The dealership is telling me that the oil sludge build up
is due to "lack of maintenance" as everyone else is hearing and that the
warranty people more than likely will send out an inspector and deny my claim.
I've been told that the repair shop will need to get a close look at the damage
and I would need to pay $750 - $1,000 out of pocket for this work then take the
chance that the warranty inspector will deny my claim. Any help you can give
will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Bob S.

I have a 2000 dodge intrepid with 85000 miles. As I was driving the car on
the Pennsylvania turnpike back to New York at 1am in the morning, the car
started making a wear banging sound and broke down on me. It cost me $150 to
have the car towed off the highway, and another $350 to have it tow to my
mechanic. I was stranded on a dark highway for about 2hours. I wouldn't
recommend this car to anybody.

CAR FAILURE # 1,079 August 25, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 2002 intrepid 2.7L. it now has 74,000 miles and I had to replace a
leaking, plastic upper water outlet (with bleeder valve) a new water pump, and
had radiator system fully flushed and the car still runs VERY hot, in fact
almost to the red line, after going up any hilly portion of freeway. Is this a
possible sign of "sludge" or what could possibly cause this?? I'm frustrated,
since we bought 2 years ago ,we replaced an oil sensor, cam sensor and two pc
brains for the car due to befuddling "check engine" light??? last year we drove
250 miles on a trip one way with a 5,000 foot grade and the temperature stayed
halfway .what's up with this lemon? we have 6,000 miles left on our 8/80
warranty. HELP
CAR FAILURE # 1,078 August 25, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Well I was pulling out of a friend of mine's driveway ,all the sudden pink
fluid start pouring out from the bottom of my engine . I went to have it
serviced and there seem to be nothing wrong with the car then a couple of months
went by i started a second job, that was in Naples it started to overheat when i
turned the a/c on the thermometer started to go back down .then out of now where
it started to make a loud tinging noise which started to get louder and louder
so i pulled over on the interstate and had to have the car towed to Burkett's
auto parts which they said the oil pump has failed .so it sat there for about 8
months for the reasons it was to expensive for me to fix for the reasons I was
having financial problems .that was the reason for having a second job, I have a
3 year old that I was supporting my self. But now the got fixed and one thing
after another was wrong with so now its about $3,336 so far .and still owing
$6,654 .now I'm left with no transportation . To a poor choice of vehicle that I
thought would be a great car for my son and I.

I have a 99 intrepid no one can figure out what's wrong with it i had it in
the shop for 6 weeks and $600! And guess what it still has a problem. At first
it just quit so i took it to a repair shop they changed spark plugs, engine
coils, sensors, ect...... Anyway they got it running but it jerks when you
accelerate. And more recently it wont start until after turning the key 100x's!
So now it's just sitting and I'm still paying on it. It's value is about $2500!
So I don't know what to do now.

CAR FAILURE # 1,075 August 25, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I purchased a 2000 Chrysler Concorde back in Oct 1999. Beautiful body
styling, plenty of room in side, excellent trunk space...I loved it. Up to 2005,
I had no major malfunctions. But in May, 2005, I started to hear a
rattling sound under the hood. When I took it in to be serviced, I was told that
the timing chain was loose/broken and needed to be replaced. Fine. These things
happen. $1000 later I have a car with a new timing chain. The mileage was
96,534. In August 2005, the engine started lugging and bucking (with increasing
intensity) in the middle of a 2 hour road trip. The "service engine soon" light
came on. And eventually the car stalled at a stoplight and I could not get it
started. I had the car towed to the nearest Chrysler dealer. The next day, they
replaced a cam sensor. The engine started up just fine. The service technician
did report a small knocking sound. But the car was running good as I drove it
off the premises. The mileage was 99,500. After about an hour so of
driving, I heard a VERY loud rattling/knocking under the hood. And it continued
to get louder. We pulled into a gas station and the engine died. I called a tow
truck and had the car towed BACK to the same Chrysler dealer. Turns out
that a connecting rod had broke. The engine would need to be replaced for about
$6600. The technician cited "oil sludge" as the likely culprit. Apparently this
loose/broken connecting rod is a very common problem with Chrysler 2.7 L
engines. And the sludging problem has something to do with the oil passages
being undersized, an inherent design flaw with these engines. My Chrysler
service manual states that under normal operating conditions, the oil should be
changed every 7500 miles. On average, I changed the oil every 4000-5000 miles,
well within the parameters specified in the manual. I find it hard to believe
that not changing the oil at exactly every 3000 miles would/should cause a "sludging"
problem to a degree that would destroy an engine under 100,000 miles. And from
what I have since read, even if I had changed the oil at every 3000 miles, it is
likely I STILL would have had engine failure. So tonight we are off to look for
a new car. I am not sure what we will get, but it will NOT be a Chrylser
product. Do you think I have any options to get at least some money back
from Chrysler? Maybe at least to get the towing charges reimbursed to me? Have
other consumers had any luck at this attempt? Mark S., Chicago IL
CAR FAILURE # 1,074 August 25, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I was driving my Intrepid home from Wisconsin (I live in Illinois) and
approximately 2 miles from my house, my engine started clanging and chugging
like something had fouled up a belt or something. I limped the car into my
parking lot and shut off the car. I returned a short while later with a
flashlight to see what might have been causing the ruckus. I tried starting the
engine and nothing. It tried to start but it would not turn over. I had the
vehicle towed to my mechanic and he was puzzled by the symptoms. He corrected
the starting problem by replacing a camshaft position sensor and when he started
it up, he confirmed his suspicions. The engine had been damaged badly and again
was clanging and chugging. He informed me that I either need to replace engine
($$$) or go out and buy a new car (even more $$$). I am aggravated because
I took very good care of this car. With almost 80k miles on it and no accidents,
the car was in showroom condition. What should I do ? Michael G.

I bought a 2000 Dodge Intrepid from a family member who had taken excellent
care of it. I have proof of oil changes every 2000 miles and the car is a
beauty! Anyway, the engine light came on while driving on the interstate at
65mph. Before I could reach home (only 10 miles away), the engine blew! Now, I
owe on a car that I cannot afford to fix! I am sick to say the least!

CAR FAILURE # 1,072 August 25, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I found a link to your email on www.datatown.com saying that you are
interested in engine failure in the Dodge Intrepid. My 2003 Dodge Intrepid
engine failed while my daughter was driving it in October 2004. The engine had
approximately 50,000 miles on it. The dealership says the problem is sludge, but
we changed the oil every 3000 miles. For nearly a year, my car has been parked
because I cannot afford the $6000+ to get a new engine. Also, I understand there
are many problems with this engine and I am very concerned about throwing good
money after bad by even replacing the engine at all. Is there any
assistance available to me? Thanks for your attention.

CAR FAILURE # 1,071 August 24, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Today my engine blew in my Intrepid. I bought it a year ago and still owe
quite a bit of money on it. It has under 69,000 miles on it. We have changed the
oil regularly at less then 3,000 miles. We went according to our handbook. Now
we found out through several mechanics it should've been at 2,500 miles. I
wonder why this wasn't stated in the car manual. Please let me know of any
information to pursue this issue further. Sincerely, Linda F.
CAR FAILURE # 1,070 August 24, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have had my 2001 Chrysler intrepid since April '02. I have had no problems
at all and have maintained it very well, i. e. frequent oil changes, not beating
on it, etc. All of a sudden, this past Sunday, (Aug 21, '05), the car started to
hesitate upon acceleration, knocking sounds came out of the engine, and then
once I slowed down to make a right turn, it shut down with no warning lights or
warning tones from the dashboard. Upon opening the hood, there was steam, oil
and antifreeze all over, and on the ground. The oil dipstick came out
cream-colored, signifying that the oil and coolant had mixed together, which
means cracked engine block and/or blown head gasket. Now, the car won't start
and no repair shop wants to touch it. Of course, my warranty was only up to 36k
and 3 years.......and the odometer just passed 50.....I am so upset. I spoke
with Daimler Chrysler today, and my dealership, neither of which are willing to
help. I still owe almost $5000 on the car and now am forced to buy a new one. I
heard that there is a class action lawsuit pending against Daimler Chrysler from
all the people who have bought these vehicles with the 2.7 liter v6. And someone
told me he wouldn't be surprised if all of us unfortunate ones who bought these
received a couple grand after the lawsuit is resolved. If only I would've
known.......I would've bought the extended warranty.
CAR FAILURE # 1,069 August 24, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
On Saturday Aug. 20, 2005, I was pulling into a parking space at the store
when the engine stopped all of a sudden. My neighbhors son has a dodge intrepid
and had the same problem with his timing chain. The engine oil also has looked
like sludge.
CAR FAILURE # 1,068 August 23, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I am e-mailing you today about my 1999 Dodge Intrepid that is out of
commission. Last Thursday (August 18, 2005) I was driving to work when all of a
sudden the car jerked and the engine light came so I coasted over to the side of
the highway. Once I was on the side of the road I tried restarting my car and it
would not start. I had my car towed to the dealership (Dave Croft
Motors--Collinsville, IL). I received a call from them that my camshaft was not
turning and my timing chain had broke and they were pretty certain it had done
other extensive damage to my engine. It was like they were trying to talk me out
of fixing it. They told me it could be well over $5,000 to get fixed and just
for them to even start to investigate how bad the damage was it would cost me at
least $600.00. I did have to pay them $102.00 just for a diagnostic test, plus 2
tow bills. My car has 85,000 miles on it, which in today's times I really don't
feel like that is many miles. I have taken good car of my car and it still looks
amazing. Most cars now last well into the 100,000 mile range and that was what I
was hoping for. These companies who are making billions of dollar off of us
consumer don't realize how much we rely on our vehicles and how much of a
financial strain it is for us when we put our faith in their cars and then are
disappointed in the end. I also this year just paid about $1,200.00 for the
evaporator condenser in the a/c to be fixed (after going 2 years without air
conditioning because I couldn't afford to get it fixed) in my car so that too,
really upsets me that I have just put that money into it and now it would be
another $5,000.00 or so get it running again. Thank you. Kellie U.
CAR FAILURE # 1,068 August 23, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Bought a 2000 Dodge Intrepid R/T on the June the 16th. It had 42k miles on
it. All previous services were done at the dealership at 4-6k miles intervals. I
had an oil change done at 44.5k and last Saturday at 50k. Driving to work
yesterday, the engine started knocking and then stalled…. Long story short as
possible, the dealer says that he engine seems to have blown a rod and they will
let me know exactly what the problem is once they tear it down. I
purchased this with a dealer included 3 year, up to 100k mile warranty. The
service guy asks about oil changes and I tell him I had one done at 2.5k and one
at 5.3k. He says well that’s your problem oil changes need to be done every 3k
miles. Well, I have looked into this prior to the first oil change and the
manual states that oil changes need to be done every 7,500 except under special
circumstances which my driving habits do not meet. He says nothing. I look him
in the eye and say, “ I am probably just getting myself worked up over nothing.
This is going to turn up to be some type of anomaly and doesn’t happen all the
time. Right?”. No Response. I then say,” So you won’t say that this is anomaly.”
Still no response.
Later in our interaction. He said I should not worry and that the warranty
company would only turn it down for things like sludge. Now get this, I say to
him “you sold me this car 8k miles ago and if any sludge exists it was there
when you sold it to me” He responds with “I didn’t sell you anything”. And I
then need to explain to him that when I say “you” I am referring to him as a
representative of the dealership who did in fact sell me this car. To say the
least, I am worried. -- Terry
CAR FAILURE # 1,067 August 21, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Just recently I inherited my parents 2000 Dodge Intrepid. They have been
changing the oil at least every 3 months sometimes every 2 months and I have
been kept up the same record. Just last week sometime around the date of August
17, 2005 my car started making a very loud clanking and knocking sound. Soon
after I scheduled an appointment with the local Dodge dealer for 8am on the 23rd
of August. After arriving at the dealership I was told there would be a $85
diagnostic fee. When asked about the lawsuit against them they said that it was
not yet settled and that any problems with the car was caused by customers not
"religiously" maintaining their cars and any repair
cost would be the owners responsibility. Upon hearing this I decided to get a
second opinion and return more knowledgeable about the lawsuit and any problems
Chrysler might have acknowledged. While on the way home the car died twice, once
at a stoplight and the second time just as I pulled into the drive way. The car
has 105,680 miles on it and has just recently been in to receive an oil change,
the timing chain has also been replaced along with the engine being cleaned to
remove sludge build up. Any information I can take to resolve this problem would
be greatly appreciated. Contact information can be sent to: Kevin & Colleen,

CAR FAILURE # 1,066 August 21, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I had oil sludges causing engine failure and the engine cost around $3000 to
repair but I was told by an auto-mechanic that the 2000 dodge intrepids engines
are not any good and the engine is not worth fixing. The auto mechanic I asked
to fix my car also sells cars told me that he would not have a 1999 or 2000
dodge intrepid on his car lot because the the engines are not any good and they
are not worth selling to people. He also said if the engine is replaced it would
probably happen again. This auto mechanic is not the only one that has told me
this, everyone that I have asked about fixing this car has told me the same
thing. The bad thing about this car is that I am still making monthly payments
on this car and I have not driven this car over a year because of engine
problems. My last payment is dec 2005 and I will be glad when I make the last
one. -- Sandra F. Hertford, NC, USA
CAR FAILURE # 1,065 August 21, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. We have sunk over $1,500 in it to date and
have been told that it needs $1,200 for new air conditioning. Shortly
thereafter, the engine started making an unusual noise. We tried to trade it in
and were offered $300 for it since the dealer (Honda) believes the engine is
shot. The electronic lock system fails regularly. The door gaskets have started
peeling off. And, I think we have only about 85,000 miles on it... mostly
freeway. $300 for a 5 year old car??? That's unbelievable!!! I'm feeling
like we were robbed. What can we do about this? - Christine W.
CAR FAILURE # 1,064 August 20, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My wife and I purchased 2001 Dodge intrepid with a 2.7L Engine on March 1st,
2005. On August 12th the engine seized up over a short drive. The car was towed
to a dealership and they informed me that they had seen alt of these cars come
back and it needed a whole new engine. This would cost me around $4,ooo dollars.
Not having this amount of money I had the car towed to a local mechanic, after
looking at the engine He informed me that there was such a build up of grease
that the engine looked like it was 10 years old. We are currently looking
into a conversion kit that will allow the car to take a better engine. I
called Chrysler Service and informed them of my problem. I told them I had owned
dodges for the last 10 years and didn’t expect this type of Quality. If I had I
would have purchased a Toyota or something else rather than looking for a dodge.
The customer service gentleman told me I should have bought a Toyota! I
honestly can’t afford to deal with this problem at this time. We spent
everything we had…and some we didn’t to purchase this car to fit a new addition
to our family, our third child. I haven’t been able to sleep worring over this
lack of transportation and funds that this faulty engine has caused us. Anything
that you can do to help with this situation would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, James H.
CAR FAILURE # 1,063 August 19, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I was recently driving my 2000 Dodge Intrepid when, without warning, it
stopped running while at a red light at a major intersection. I had a small
child with me, it was 90 + degrees. I had the car towed to a shop that later
informed me that the ENTIRE ENGINE was blown! My Timing Chain Tensioner broke.
There was metal throughout the entire engine. I have faithfully maintained the
car. There was no warning whatsoever. I am now stuck still owing $6500 on a car
that is not salvageable. I am a single mother of two and in quite a bind. I will
now have to pay $4000 or more (which I DON'T have) for a new engine. Meanwhile,
I am in a rental which is quite expensive. Something needs to be done. Marla K.

My husband and I just bought a used 1998 Dodge Intrepid 7 months ago with
70,000 miles on it and the engine seized up while my husband was driving on
August 11th !!!!!!! Its now in the repair shop and we'll have to pay an
incredible amount to fix it. Since we always kept up with the oil changes, and
took care of this car, its unheard of that the engine should have seized so
soon. Please let me know what I'd have to do to let the manufacturer of
this engine know how inexcusable this is. I feel that I should be somehow
compensated for the fact that my husband could have been killed on the road due
to this faulty engine as well as being compensated for the costs involved now.
Thank you. I look forward to hearing from someone!

I was on my way to work driving my 2002 intrepid. I was making a left hand

a belt had broken. I made the left hand turn and the engine just turned off.
Luckily for me, I was at the top of a hill so I coasted down into a nearby park
before everything just locked. I ended up blocking the entrance. I had to have
it towed to my home. My problem is there is still a $9,000 balance on this
vehicle. I don't know what to do at this point

Hey I have a 2000 Concorde that I have had for about 18 months. It has 71k

CAR FAILURE # 1,058 August 17, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Worst Car Ever Story. I bought my car used with almost 20 thousand miles
with a 3.5 engine in 2001. I was in an accident in June of 2002. I received
repairs to my car and everything was fine I had gotten scheduled maintenance and
made sure that my car was in excellent condition. I even drove out of town
numerous amount of times and came back with a good reports from engineers. I
just had gotten a new oil pan before and my oil change and it drove fine. Last
year when I had stopped working because I was on maternity leave that's when my
car came tumbling down with all sorts of problems. It just kept overheating so
the mechanic told me not to drive it. I took it to the place where I had bought
it from they said they fixed the problem and here comes another story that the
mechanic has no longer worked there and there was something else wrong with it.
I was like no way this has to be a mistake. Now I am stuck with a car that has
to be replaced with a new ENGINE that will cost me over $5000 more than what my
car is even worth. I want to get a new car but it seems as if no one wants to
give me what it really should be. I just suggest that next time I find out that
someone is going to buy a DODGE just FORGET It cause its not evenworth the time.
From fixing one thing to another I rather save money with a car I know I can get
my money worth and longevity out of. Seemed like every year an INCIDENT

Sir, I leave at Albany, Georgia. I drive a 2002 Dodge Intrepid and on

his safety sit in the back sit. I THANK GOD THERE WAS NO VEHICLE FOLLOWING
CLOSELY. My vehicle has about 100,927 miles on it. I had it tow to the local
Carl Gregory and I am told the transmission had collapsed and that replacement
will cost me $3,000.00. How in the world am I going to cough out that kind of
money to replace my transmission. My wife drive a 1992 Toyota Camry and she has
not had to replace anything major with her vehicle. What in goodness sake in

I was searching around for information on my wife's' 99 Concord. I'm about
to have the engine replaced. (the top-end is destroyed because of a fault in the
timing chain).
Anyhow, I came across your site (google), and figured I'd let you in on what I
found out about some one the problems with the 2.7 liter v6. I talked to a guy I
know who works for a dealership near Atlanta. He's a Chrysler/Mopar buff, and
knows TONS about Chrysler cars. He told me that the 2.7 was a piece of crap, and
that I should get rid of it ASAP. And, that you should ALWAYS use the low-weight
oil (5w-20 or whatever) because the hydraulic tensioner for the timing chain
can't handle 10w or higher oil. Well, this tidbit of information came TOO
LATE by almost 8 months. I contacted him looking for a replacement block after
the wife's car blew up. And after hearing what he had to say, and knowing that I
had the oil changed just a couple weeks before the failure, I put two and two
together and realized that the oil change place used the wrong weight oil
(10w-30). Being almost a YEAR after the service, I couldn't go back to the oil
change place and start raising hell, but I CAN let people like you know what I
found out so you can spread this information as needed. Regards! Dan

CAR FAILURE # 1,050 August 15, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I recently just purchased a 2005 "new body style" jeep Cherokee Laredo, .
After about 2 months , i noticed a drag in the transmission when driving, kind
of like it was switching gears (only its an automatic) i asked about this and
was told that was normal with all Chryslers....my first service appt at 5000
miles i took it in for service i was told that the transmission had to be
flushed out 4 times that water had gotten in it, due to an air conditioner hose
that was dripping condensation into the transmission. It was in the design !
This hose was routed right over the transmission in this new design...the engine
in the new design is a German Mercedes engine design it is in all the new jeep
cherokees...i was given back my car after the oil change and the transmission
flush....and by mid day the car was shaking and knocking at 40mph, 50mph 60mph
and so on and with each time you put in gear, reverse or drive it would make a
loud thud...so i took it back to the dealership and was told it would have to
have a new transmission put in!!!! At less than 5k miles The way this engine was
designed routing an air conditioner hose over the transmission which all air
conditioners have condensation and it leaks directly over and in to the
transmission. The fluid in the transmission was the color of pepto bismal by the
time i took it in for service....this is a design flaw that Chrysler knows about
!
My biggest issue is that its going to take 10 days to "rebuild" not replace the
transmission but rebuild and the parts are from Germany. It normally would take
a day to rebuild or replace the transmission, but the parts will take 10 days to
get and are on back order...i have two children and a single mom and paying for
a rental car for 10-15 days at 40 dollars a day is not something i can afford
that is over 600.$ and my new car pmt which i still obviously have to make is
436.$
When i called Chrysler direct they denied any help in providing a rental car
while my car was being repaired due to their engine design flaw...unless i had
purchased an extended warranty which provides a 35.$ per day car allowance and
costs 1200.$ they wanted nothing to do with me and yet told me they had to
review the situation and i would need to take my car to the dealership before
they would review it at all...then once the engine was taken apart and i could
not get my car back they denied any help!
Chrysler will not take any responsibility for this ! Its the design they chose
and it has a flaw ! They are not notifying any new owners or recalling the car
to fix this issue they are just hoping the consumer wont realize it till it is
over the miles and factory warranty to repair it,,,,every new owner is having
the issue i have stopped other owners who have the same vehicle and were not
even aware of the problem and like me were told all jeeps drive this way,,,,the
transmission is flushed when it is brought in for service and the dealerships
are told to just return the vehicle to the owner with out notifying the consumer
of the issue and hope they don't bring it back !
No one wants to take on a company like Chrysler...or believe there new car is a
dud...mine is and i think Chrysler should take responsibility for the 2million
plus cars they have sold over the nation with this design flaw! They decided to
merge with Mercedes and now put one of the Mercedes engines in their product and
our misleading consumers in the design flaw...i have not checked in to the
dangers this could cause, but i know of the inconvenience and heart ache it has
caused me and my children and i hate to think of us being broken down in the 100
degree plus weather stranded on the hwy and who knows what els! My kids are 4
and 5 yrs old they don't deserve not to attend there activities and i don't
deserve to not have a car for over 3 weeks because i made the mistake of buying
a new Chrysler...they are hurting American moms and parents and men and women
who thought they were going to have a the joys of buying and driving a new car
instead a big nightmare!! No wonder the guy on the commercial says "if you find
a better car buy it!" he knows !!!! This is just wrong for a multi billion
dollar co. Like Chrysler to do to a 20k a year single mom!!
Any way if you can help please notify me at 214-912-3239 and home # 972-223-9155

I own a ’98 Dodge Intrepid, with a 2.7, that I still owe $3900.00 on (I used
to love the car and talked about upgrading to a new one in the next year or
so…not anymore!). The engine oil pressure light started coming on at idle and up
to 1500RPM, when the car warms up it starts burning oil. The car has 103,000
miles on it. I looked on line to find out possible causes, when I found

CAR FAILURE # 1,045 August 12, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I bought this car new for my wife because it was a nice sized yet sporty
family car. It has use oil all of it's life and was told that 1qt of oil every
2000 miles was "normal" consumption. The problem was that at 40,000 miles it
became 1qt every 1000 miles which was nice since it was out of warranty. The car
now has 80,000 miles on it and isn't worth anything. It makes me sick to drive
along behind it in a 200,000 mile ford and watch the smoke come out of a pretty
red Dodge intrepid. I swear if Chrysler doesn't do something for us lemon owners
I will never buy any product associated with them. This car has been adult
driven buy a classy lady and has had the oil and filters changed religiously.

I own a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with a 2.7 engine that has recently started
knocking. The engine has over 100,000 miles on it, but has been fully maintained
and serviced by myself. My wife drives the car and she drives like a turtle...lol.
Long story short the car has started to knock, and shut off recently (without
any warnings or reason). I will be glad to assist in any way I can ,and hope
someone gets results from this LEMON.Best of luck. Feel free to contact me!
CAR FAILURE # 1,043 August 11, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I was driving in a construction zone on the freeway when the hot light came
on - alarmed I got off the road at the first exit. The engine just quit. Oil and
anti-freeze came out below. The dealership says that I need a new engine because
anti-freeze and oil are mixed in the engine and they refuse to work on it. The
cost for a replacement engine is $5,700 and I still owe $6,600. I went back to
the dealership that sold me the car to see if they could take the car back on
trade in since they sold me this lemon to begin with. All the salesman seemed to
know about the 2.7 liter engine and one salesman commented that it was the worse
engine they had ever made. I am at a loss what to do. I am afraid to put another
2.7 liter engine in the car. My husband is on disability and I my health has not
been the best (breast cancer survivor). I do not have the means to pay for this
car plus another car. I have always felt it was my duty as a American to buy
American Automobiles and back the American worker. I feel that Chrysler has let
down the American Consumer and damaged the reputation its company as a whole. I
am seriously considering buying a foreign automobile.
CAR FAILURE # 1,042 August 10, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
We have a knocking in the engine of our 2003 Dodge Dakota Truck - We take it
to the dealer, they tell us if they find sludge, the work to disable the engine
will be around $500. My husband said there will be no sludge because he changes
the oil on a timely schedule. The 1st 2 oil changes were done at the dealer and
since then my husband has changed the oil - switching to Mobil 1 regularly. They
call and say there was sludge and to fix we need to replace the engine. Total
cost will be $4,400. We tell them we do not want a new engine, They have now had
the truck for an additional 2 days, and the engine is still not all put
together. They said it will still cost $500 to pick it up - even though they did
nothing but take it apart and put it back together. kc

My wife's' 2001 Intrepid 2.7L engine dumped all the coolant into the oil pan
while cruising at 45 mph today. It has been meticulously maintained, with
Castrol Synthetic Oil changes at every 3,000 miles since we bought the car with

cracked with no prior warning. Please publish how to enter the class action

Its confirmed. My 1999 Dodge Dakota was dubbed a gross polluter in April
2005, only my second smog.. I called the Dodge consumer affairs insisting that
they pay to fix the plenium gasket which had collapsed and they refused. Then my
water pump blew up 3 weeks ago, $450.00. Today, my engine blew up in my
driveway, oil all over the place. This is costing me over $2,000 to fix. Every
gasket in the engine failed. Very upset. Any suggestions on what to do and how
to deal with Chrysler?

CAR FAILURE # 1,039 August 09, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
Our engine died on us twice while driving up to Truckee California on the
freeway, The dealer blamed a faulty pc brain and said they had to "download an
update" into out car's pc brain. Since then ,we took to dealer at least a
dozen times to try to diagnose and turn off the "check engine" light. We had to
replace a "cam" sensor. "oil" sensor, upper bleeder valve housing assembly,
driver window motor, and today the Water pump!!. I change oil every 3,000 miles.

I own a 1999 Chrysler Concorde which unfortunately is (was) powered by the
2.7 liter engine. The engine was serviced regularly and the car was well
maintained. With my family in the car, the engine failed without warning and had
to be towed to a mechanic. The mechanic laughed at me for owning what he
described as a “lemon” and quoted me a price tag of $7,000 to replace the
engine. As if that isn’t bad enough, I tried to contact someone at
Chrysler and was talked down to and hung up on. Obviously customer support isn’t
important to this organization. Not only am I not going to buy another
Daimler Chrysler product – ever, I am going to zealously preach to everyone that
I come into contact with about the dangers of buying a Chrysler product.

Here is my horror story: Bought a 1999 Chrysler Concorde in November
of last year (2004) and while driving this from PA to Delaware, with my wife and
2 kids, the engine shut down without any notice while of a interstate highway
going approx. 60 mph. Luckily I was able to steer it of the side of the road! To
make a LONG story short, I was left with a 4,500$ new engine bill, INCREDIBLY
bad service from Chrysler, and ALOT of frustration. Their response was that the
oil change record was probably to fault, which is a bunch of crap!!! These guys
need to be held ACCOUNTABLE!!!! Please tell me what I can do, as I hear this has
happened to ALOT of other people!!

Just had my 2001 Dodge Intrepid die on me and Tim Marbarger Dodge in
Concord, NC is telling me that I need a new engine - $6600 plus tax. I have
paperwork on what they state the problem. They recently replaced my timing belt
and water pump (early July) and last Wednesday the car stopped running on me.
They have been servicing my car and have not once told me that I was going to
experience engine problems if I didn't take care of something! I will call the
800 # listed above for the US National Highway and Safety Institute to report
this all well as opening a case file with Chrysler. It also recommends I call
the zone rep - how do I find out who this is? Also, about a year ago the
transmission went so I had to have this fixed - $1800. I also just put on a
transmission control module that cost about $500 (car died on me right after
this work was done by transmission mechanic)....Stephne T.

I would like to add my comments to your website re: my 1995 Chrysler LHS. In
the first year of ownership while driving on expressway in center lane, car
literally died. Very scary. Remarkably - given brakes and steering were greatly
impaired - I was able to drift off highway without accident. Dealer said nothing
wrong with car. Six months later while on trip 300 miles away from home, car
died again driving off expressway. Chrysler dealer said ??? Possibly Map Sensors
but would cost too much to replace all. At that time they replaced one which
they thought could possibly help correct the problem. Back home again, while
pulling into a parking lot, car died again. Started car again, was ok. Was
vacationing two years later, car "conked" out while driving into town. Not fun
trying to find Chrysler Dealership. After finding one in St. Joseph MI, they
said, "We can't take you in, we are too busy." ??? After 20 minutes car started.
Took exquisite care of car - engine and exterior as well. This year after
detailing the outside to perfection my wife and I were driving on surface
street, car "coughed, choked, growled and totally died." The end of my 1995 LHS
Chrysler relationship ended in a towtruck ride home at midnight (light whirring
announcing to our neighbors we were indeed home) for my wife and me. As a
gesture of my loyalty and love for my LHS Chrysler, I decided to give the car
away to the mechanic at tow company.

We just bought a Chrysler concord 1997 we went to Kansas city for a 2 day
vacation--got back on a Saturday and that afternoon the engine started knocking.
The company that sold us the car was true to there people and replaced it with a
brand new engine---but on the way home from work about a week later the quick
release valve that went to the gas line to the engine failed and a 1/2 tank of
gas went on my hot engine. Was lucky the car did not go up in blazes. The
air-condition has stopped working also.

I think I may be unique in the fact that I have not only had one bad
experience with a Chrysler engine, but two! The first experience, although it
could have been avoided with better maintenance on my part, cost me about $3000.
The problem appeared to be oil sludge. I was able to avoid higher costs because
I hunted the replacement down
myself and had a garage install it for me. They didn't have a "special tool"
that was required to install the engine, so I ended up taking the hit for that
as well! One year later, I had another engine go bad on me, without warning this
time. I had a few days of what sounded to me like a sticky valve, and it went
away. About a week later, I was heading out to a golf outing and the engine
began to shudder and "clunk" repeatedly. This time my oil changes were to the
letter and all other fluids seemed to be fine. I haven't
received word from the shop yet on this engine, but it looks as if I'm going to
be replacing this one again. I'll opt for the 3.2L engine this time (if
that's possible to install, rather than the standard 2.7???). I am seriously
considering taking action. Don't buy a car from Parkway O'Brien
Chrysler-Jeep-Subaru in Peoria, IL either!

Dodge Intrepid 2000 ES 3.2 L Steering rack failure: At 50,000 miles, there
was a noise (bottoming sound) coming from behind the firewall when going over
small bumps. The steering wheel developed about 3-4 inches of play and the wheel
had to be continuously centered. New tires and alignment did not correct
problem. After a few more weeks, the steering began to bind up in turns. There
was a louder noise and the wheel had to be fought to get centered. One day while
making a small turn I experienced complete loss of control due to steering
failure. I called Dodge and wrote 3 emails and they refused to even consider
repairing this obvious defect under courtesy. As I researched this issue, I
discovered that there are hundreds of complaints of premature steering failure
in LH models. Dodge hotline acted as if they never heard of these problems from
anyone, but I've heard that there is a class action suit going forward. I have
been quoted 800-1000 for replacement of this obvious defect. It is terrible that
this car has such a unsafe steering design. What is worse is that Chrysler is
putting it's head in the sand and refuses to even offer a local zone office
phone number to assist customers with this known safety defect. Michael P.

My daughter was driving her car and her engine just seized up steering wheel
would not turn or anything. Luckily she had just gotten off freeway. We had it
towed to auto dealer and they said that engine went out due to sludge built up
and that it was going to cost 6800.00 to fix it. The oil was just changed 2
months ago so I know that it was not due to negligence. The car was only a
2000 so it wasn’t like it was real old. I need to know how I can get Chrysler to
pay for this because the engine itself should still be on warranty I would
think. The timing change is what really went out but service department said
that because of the engine that is it you have to replace the whole engine.

I have 1996 Dodge Intrepid 3.5L ES and I am trying to get the only car I own

Bought my 1999 Intrepid from dealer with 87000km on it. Within 60 days of
purchase engine went, only had 30 day warranty. Paid to have engine replaced
given a 12 month warranty with unlimited kilometers on new engine. My car ran
fine for a year I did oil changes at every 3000km - 5000km but this doesn't seem
to matter because 14 months after engine was replaced that horrible knocking
noise is back. I need to replace the engine for a second time and I still owe

Our 2000 Chrysler Concorde engine has thrown a rod at 73,000 miles. While
driving to work 08/03/05 the car simply stopped while my wife was the wheel.
Unfortunately, our warranty expired 3000 miles ago. A subsequent,
investigation revealed that the engine was indeed blown and needed to be
replaced. Estimates we have received so far range from $4000.00 - $6000.00. To
date we owe nearly $10,000 dollars on this car. Several other horror
stories have come to our attention in the last 24 hours or so concerning the
vulnerability of the Chrysler Concorde engine and its propensity for sludge
build up. Our question is, has anyone with a similar problem had success in
resolving their complaint favorably? If so, we would certainly like to know what
steps to take next. Sincerely, Vexed & Perplexed in Detroit

CAR FAILURE # 1,020 August 03, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
About four weeks ago, on July 9th to be exact I encountered my first
incident with my 2004 Dodge Intrepid (33 000 miles) . I was driving on the
Interstate (I40) at about 65 - 70 mph when all of a sudden the engine light came
on and at the exact same time the engine shot down. I guess I had a guardian
angel, because I was all the way in the outer lane and I had to cross over three
lanes to reach the emergency lane. Once I stopped the car I noticed that she
just kept putter until I turned the key in the ignition all together. The next
two times I had my children with me (9 - 13) and again we could have seriously
gotten hurt, but due to my quick reaction I managed to maneuver the vehicle out
of very heavy traffic with out being hit! Yesterday morning I experienced
my sixth incident and I am in search of a solution ever since. Frankly I
can not afford to replace the engine because I have the "single mother syndrome"
and I should not have to replace an engine especially when the car is just one
year old. Because I absolutely have to have a car I went back to the
dealership and informed them about this problem. I have no other choice but to
trade this car in as fast as I can before it stops working all together. But the
thought that I am now loosing close to $8000.00makes me sick....If there is
anyone who is ready to file a class action suit let me know because you can
count me in.

My story is similar to the others mentioned in the 5/17/05 article. I
purchased a 2000 Dodge Intrepid for my son at the beginning of 2005 for $4,400.
It had recently been inspected and two different mechanics told me the car was
in excellent shape. Mileage was around 62K. At the end of March, I had the oil
changed. and I heard a similar comment from the mechanic who changed the oil,
who said the car looked to be in great shape. Mileage at the time of the oil
change was around 64K. Two weeks ago, the car stopped running. I was
told the engine seized, the car had no oil and it was virtually worthless,
except for the new radio / CD player that I put in. I have been told that the
car will cost thousands to repair - more than I originally paid. At 67K miles ,
my car is worthless. No oil leak, nothing on my driveway, no sign of any
problems. Any suggestions on what I can do to? - John

My 2002 Intrepid's engine began to knock and smoke suddenly without warning.
No temperature rise, no low oil light or anything. Upon inspection, I found the
water was low in the reservoir (which is another bad design) and began to refill
it thinking it was just low on water. I put almost three gallons of water in
wondering where it was going! No water was coming out from under the car, so I
pulled the oil dip stick and there it was!
CAR FAILURE # 1,016 July 29, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have replaced water pumps on vehicles before and thought this was all that
was necessary. Boy, was I surprised! I couldn't even find the water pump. I
hired a mechanic to work on my car since it was apparent the water pump was "in
there somewhere". After removing what seemed like half the front of the car and
half of the engine, there it was. And as I have now learned, it was also caked
in sludge with everything else in there. The bearings between the timing chain
gear and the impeller was gone and that let water flow straight into the oil
pan. What a design! Now my engine has rust all over the overhead cams, plus the
sludge covering everything else. I don't know if it will ever run again,
so if you guys can help with some type remedy from Chrysler, I will be very
appreciative. I have owned Chryslers my entire life and this is the worst engine
design I have ever seen. I also experienced the heater not operating
properly by blowing cold air until you hit about 1000 rpms. I found that if it
is even the most slightly low on water it will do this. As I mentioned earlier,
the design of the radiator reservoir is also poor in that you cannot fill it
without the engine being cool since it is pressurized once it heats up. I also
had to replace the reservoir due to it separating at the seams one time. Thanks,
Andy Sims

Our Dodge Intrepid's engine failed while driving. Exactly how it is stated
in this web site the warranty company (Wynn's) denied our claim stating we did
not maintain our car with proper oil changes. Something (forgot the name of the
part) broke because oil was not getting to it properly. When it broke it went
into the timing chain causing the timing chain to ca lapse, breaking the timing
gasket and causing a domino effect on the entire engine. We have contacted the
attorney-generals of in the state of MN where we live and are now waiting for a
response from them and their help with settling this with the warranty company.
We are a two person working family with two children and cannot afford a
$6,000-$7,000 repair bill, let alone the fact that we still owe $5,000 for the
purchase of the car.

I am an owner of a 1999 Chrysler Intrepid. I purchased it in 2001 and have
always had the oil changed, etc. Out of the blue day before yesterday, I was
driving home, my car started to knock, etc., no warning lights and then died. I
had it towed to the Chrysler dealership, they informed me the 2.7 engine was
shot and I’d have to pay anywheres from 3,500 – 6,500 for another engine. When I
asked how this could happen to a car not even 6 yrs old. They said they didn’t
know. They never mentioned oil slug or there being a problem with these engines
so I just found out via the internet. Either they fix it at no cost to me or I
pay and then going ahead with a lawsuit (hopefully).

My 2.7L engine failed while driving. Repair man stated the oil drain holes clog,
and the oil cannot drain back to the oil pan. I changed my oil every 3,000

suddenly started knocking and died out. It was a 1999.
CAR FAILURE # 1,007 July 27, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
On June 16, 05 on a major interstate in the pouring rain on my way into work, my
3 1/2 yr old 2002 Chrysler 300M completely died. At first it felt like I blew a
tire out, luckily getting through 3 lanes of traffic I got the car on the side
of the road. The car was towed for $160. to the Chrysler dealership that I
purchased the car. The following Monday afternoon I contacted the service
department asking the status of the vehicle, I was told "it's a transmission
problem". Now I'm a 42 year old female that doesn't know much about cars, but I
told him that I knew that before the car was towed as the car would start,
wouldn't go into gear and the shifter could be moved up and down clearly a
transmission problem. After 2 1/2 weeks of a car rental totalling close to $550.
I was told that I could have the transmission rebuilt or purchase a refurbished
transmission. Either one would be close to if not over $3,000. It was also
mentioned that they were purchasing another transmission for another vehicle and
it would be better if they ordered both together. Coincidence that another
Chrysler had a transmission problem. Bottom line, $160. for towing, $550. for
rental car and $3,170 for transmission, not to mention the time from work and
the numerous phone calls to Chrysler representatives. My lease on this vehicle
was up before I ever received the car back, so on top of the frustration I had
to purchase another vehicle immediately. Chrysler representatives told me they
would "consider to help me after I paid for the repairs and after I purchased a
new Chrysler". I told them there was no way I would ever purchase another
Chrysler. Since this incident, I have openly been talking about the problems
with these cars and it amazed me the number of people who also have had problems
with Chryslers & Dodges. - I lost out on $4,000 on a vehicle that was 3 1/2
years old that I was the only driver of the car and I took car of that vehicle
with all the scheduled maintenance being done at the dealership where I

CAR FAILURE # 1,006 July 26, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid ES with the 2.7 Liter engine. The VIN on the vehicle
is: xxxxxxxxxxxx. I say that I own it, but there are still 13 payments
remaining on it. The car was purchased from Wells Fargo Finance company in
early 2001 for my wife. At that time, the vehicle had about 12,000 to 15,000
miles on it. My wife passed away in May of 2002 and since then the car has
not been driven on a daily basis. Hence, the vehicle has about 37,000 - 39,000
miles on it. While running an errand with my Granddaughter on July 8,
2005, the engine started to sputter and I had to manipulate the gas pedal to get
the vehicle the few miles to home. The vehicle would NOT start after that. I
called to have the vehicle towed to a nearby mechanic and he mentioned that they
found about a quarter of an inch of sludge after removing the valve cover. The
mechanic stated that the only thing that could be done is an engine replacement.
He ensured me that trying to clean the sludge may cause further damage. I
started investigating this via the Internet and found your web site. I called
Chrysler and opened a case number with them. Case # xxxxxxxx. After about an
hour on hold, a person came back to me and stated that the car came to the U.S.
from Canada via a leasing company and that the warranty did not transfer,
therefore there was nothing he or Chrysler could do. He also stated that because
it came from a leasing company, there was possibility that the engine
maintenance records could be verified. So, the bottom line is that I still
am making payments on a 2000 Dodge Intrepid, that I can't drive, that I can't
afford to have fixed, and that no one will assist. Based on the
recommendation from your web site, I will also file a grievance with the NHTSA
and the CAS. Can you assist me in any way???? Can you provide the phone
number of the "Zone Rep" for my area (see below). Thank you for ANY
assistance you may provide and please feel free to contact me at any time.
Thanx, Mike M
CAR FAILURE # 1,005 July 26, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
My 2000 Dodge Intrepid has been maintained at every 3000 miles. On 7/25/2005 my
wife was on her way home from work an called me and said the car started to
overheat and she knew she had to shut it off right know. So when I came to see
what the problem was the engine was fried. oil in the water and water in the oil
plus oil spewing out the side. This vehicle has never given me any kind of
problem whatsoever. . It just happened. The car has only 84000 mile on it , to
top that.
So what do I do next?
CAR FAILURE # 1,004 July 24, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
2001 Dodge Intrepid SE, My engine failed last Sunday, 07/17/05. Now, the
company I have the extended warranty through is trying to claim the build up of
sludge as the problem. Although I have records of maintenance every 3000 miles.

CAR FAILURE # 1,003 July 24, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I was browsing the internet to see how much replacement motors were going for
since ours blew 100 miles from home while driving . We we lucky enough to keep
pushing the car to it's limits while it was knocking and making all kinds of
noises. We have it parked at a Ford dealership since it is not movable. The
Dodge mechanic almost laughed in our face when he heard the car. My heart sank,
and I was extremely angry with this man who could see we had 3 small children
who had been sitting in the car for an hour waiting for him to say "you're
screwed!" "she's toast, she's fried".. So much for compassion. He offered no
help of any kind. There was a woman working in the tire and lube center who gave
us a number of rental car agencies. Sad to say, I know the worst isn't over, I
know Ford will be after us for money because our car is in their lot. I
hope someday someone can fix these issues with Dodge Intrepids. - Sherry O'Hare
CAR FAILURE # 1,002 July 24, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I am a single mother of 3 children. Amongst school, daycare, karate lessons,
taxiing kids around, and routine daily chores, I take car maintenance to the
heart. I have a 1999 DODGE INTREPID with about 94,000/mi on it. I changed the
oil regularly, tune-ups, used the right lubricants and specified oils. You can
imagine my shock when the car was burning oil for no apparent reason and no
signs of leakage. My engine is gone now leaving me without a car. I do not have
the money needed to repair this and because there was no indication the car was
having any problems I wasn't prepared for any major car expenses. There are
other complaints I have ABOUT THE CAR BUT I FIGURED ID START WITH THE MOST
SERIOUS DEFECT. Please tell me what, who, where, how to get some type of
compensation or answers. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
CAR FAILURE # 1,001 July 24, 2005 - Chrysler/Dodge Engine Failure
I have a 1999 dodge intrepid. my engine has gone out. it's at 86,000 miles. I
had my transmission replaced at about 36,000 mile but it was under warranty. The
engine issue is driving me crazy. because I'm still paying for a car that i
can't drive. I've tried to find an engine to replace it, but used engines are
running $2,800+ and new ones are running $4,000+. it's ridiculous, because I
checked the value of my car and it's only worth $1,700.

My husband email you yesterday regarding our vehicle. I would like to provide
you with more details with what happened while I was driving our car. Last
Sunday I got up to go to work, and my husband check the fluids in the car
because I was going to drive up to Maine after work with our two boys. He told
me the fluids were just fine. We had just had the oil changed less then two
months ago and did not put that many miles on the car since. I was on the
highway when the car
